McCarthy Delighted With Debutants
Monday, 1st Sep 2014 06:00

Debutants Teddy Bishop and Kevin Bru were amongst a number of players manager Mick McCarthy praised after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Derby. Bishop, 18, was making his full debut and 25-year-old Bru was handed his first league start.

“Kevin Bru I thought was different class and Teddy Bishop was outstanding,” the Town boss enthused.

He was also delighted with the contribution made by subs Tyrone Mings and Alex Henshall during the second half: “They are very dangerous down the left.

“I’m pleased with some of the young players that we’ve got and they had to fight really hard to get a point from a very good side.”

Top-scoring centre-half Christophe Berra netted his third goal of the season and his eighth in the last 12 months, having failed to net in four and a half years at Wolves, where McCarthy was his boss for most of that spell.

“Payback time!” the Blues boss laughed. “Good. About time he did. He’s great, Christophe.”

Jokingly asked whether he’s considered playing the 29-year-old up front, McCarthy added: “He can play where he wants, he can have a fiver from the till as well!”

Berra is set to spend the week with the Scotland squad ahead of their game with Germany next Sunday but McCarthy says he picked up a niggle: “I’m hoping he’s OK because he’s got a bit of a sore knee.

“We’ll be contacting the SFA just to see what’s happening with him because we don’t want him injured.”

All three of Berra’s goals have come from Paul Anderson crosses, two of them from freekicks.

“If you’ve got somebody who can put deliveries in you’ve got a chance of scoring off them if you’ve got big fellas like them,” McCarthy said.

“That’s why they have specialist set-piece takers. Ando has improved no end at that. There were a few that irked me, but he put one right on the button, didn’t he?”

Leicester’s Chris Wood was spotted sitting with the Town fans at Derby. Wood, 22, is Tommy Smith’s room-mate when the duo are on international duty with New Zealand and the striker was with his fellow All White’s family at the iPro Stadium.

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are in action against Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road this evening (KO 7pm). Jack Collison and Darren Ambrose, who have been training with the Blues in recent weeks, are set to be involved.

Hope if we do sell didz that Chris Wood is involved in the deal!! He is a prolific striker, proven at championship level and would be a great replacement

Wood was ok but as you would expect kept himself to himself, Alan Lee, who was also with the fans in the away support was different class, real good fun and enjoying the attention.

Wood is strong, tall (6ft3) with a good goalscoring record at Leicester (14 in 47) and loan clubs such as Brighton (8 in 29), Birmingham (9 in 23) and Millwall (11 in 19). 34 New Zealand caps. He's not 23 until September, so I'd be delighted if we could get him in part-exchange for McGoldrick.

Not a great goal scoring record though to be fair.... Thought it was a bit better than that!

Micks praise is usually fatal, means they will be dropped or loaned out!

Chris Wood would be a great signing - young, hungry, powerful striker who given a run of games will only get better. He's had a lot of loan spells during his formative years and definitely shows promise at Championship level. About a goal every 3 games - think he'd suit MM - If Didz goes, make sure Wood comes to us.

not certain about chris wood, although he is prob better than anything else we've got up front apart from mcgoldrick, who seems will imminently be on to pastures new. chris woods goal record currently a tad under 1 goal every 3.4 games or say just about 2 goals every 7 games. his career goals are 57 in 191 games. now that is a hell of a lot better than i could ever hope to score, however, is it enough to fill the void left by mcgoldrick if the deal goes through as expected? furthermore, is it good enough to put us in play off contention? he would need to step up a tad but even so, give me wood over sammon any day of the week! :-)

Hang on a minute. . . I've just had an idea.
Tell Leicester that Nouble is McGoldrick and ship him off instead.
Keep McGoldrick. Put Chris Wood up front with him and ME gets to pocket a few million!!

Quids in!!

@bluelodgeblue Sorry for the neg, a slip of the mouse on a nervy day. Totally agree we have what looks like a great product of our academy, with more to follow. In our position (so far this season and in the past - oh this is depressing - 9 seasons) getting them in earlier and playing them regularly is what we need, as without promotion the best ones will move on sooner or later.

quote "Micks praise is usually fatal, means they will be dropped or loaned out!"

Only to be told in a few months time they are not McCarthy's sort of player and they can go.
