Leicester Linked With New McGoldrick Bid
Monday, 1st Sep 2014 00:56

Leicester City are reported to have made an increased bid for Town striker David McGoldrick. The transfer window closes at 11pm this evening with the Foxes said to have made the new offer on Sunday, a first bid of an initial £6.5 million having been turned down late last week.

After Saturday's game at Derby, manager Mick McCarthy revealed that Town owner Marcus Evans wasn't keen to do the deal, then reportedly worth up to £8 million, but said talks between the clubs would continue over the weekend. According to The Sun, which broke the news of the first offer, Leicester have now made a new bid.

If a deal is agreed before today’s deadline McCarthy says he’ll initially look to the loan market to replace last season’s 16-goal top scorer before targeting more permanent additions in January.

“We’ve signed Conor Sammon and we got Murph and Kevin Bru and we’ll just have to see what we’ve got,” McCarthy told Radio Suffolk.

“And if we have to get some loans, as I keep saying, Premier League clubs will be willing to loan players out once they’ve got their squads together. We might have to do that.

“If that’s the case and it does eventually happen, come January there’ll be funds to do something else and build, and sometimes you have to do that.”

He is confident that owner Evans will make funds available to him if the deal does get done: “Absolutely.”

After the Foxes’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal yesterday, manager Nigel Pearson wouldn’t discuss specific targets, as is his usual policy until there is positive news on a deal.

On his plans for deadline day, Pearson told Radio Leicester: “We know the players that we’re trying to get and if we can get them, fine. If we can’t, we can’t and we’ll move on.”

Regarding young Premier League strikers who may be on McCarthy’s loan wish list if McGoldrick does move on, the only player of that profile previously linked this summer is 17-year-old Newcastle frontman Adam Armstrong.

Former loanee Jonny Williams may be amongst McCarthy's potential targets, depending on whether he's required by new Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock and if any other clubs are in for him.

One more senior player the Town manager could renew his interest in, either now or when the loan ‘window’ opens on September 8th, is Stephen Hunt’s brother Noel, who is out of favour at Leeds. We understand that McCarthy considered a move for the 31-year-old earlier in the summer.

Meanwhile, Palace, who were linked with Tommy Smith last week, are understood to have been eyeing Blues left-back Tyrone Mings. However, the Eagles are believed to be close to completing a deal to sign Tottenham left-back Zeki Fryers.

Elsewhere, ex-Blue Owen Garvan, who was training with the Town squad earlier in the summer, has been linked with a move from Selhurst Park to Bolton Wanderers where his former Eagles boss Dougie Freedman is now in charge.

Will obviously be a massive blow to our promotion hopes to lose him but for a player with 1 year left how can we reject 8 million for him? It's too good to turn down and if reinvested properly, may even benefit us more if he leaves! What ever happens, good luck McGoldrick and thanks for all you have already done to our club!

Oh this is going to be a fun day. If the bid is in excess or around £8m then a Club of our size has to take it. With a player of his age and with a contract fast running down we would be silly not to take the money. This is only my opinion and there will be many fans disappointed if he does go, but if he does not go now the player himself could be really unsettled and will wonder what if. Good luck David if you do go and thank you for
classy performances last season.

I'm going to get abuse for this but I am a big fan of mcgoldrick but.... £8 million! Really? Personally if the money or even half the money was guaranteed to get reinvested I would bite their hand off! We have some promising young strikers, if we keep mcgoldrick, brilliant, but with no money or reinforcements around him, things aren't really going to change from last season, he is a very good player but he isn't good enough to carry ipswich to the premiership singlehanded

With the money we got, we could buy 3-4 really top championship players and in the championship that is good enough to get you in the playoffs, I'm just being realistic and thinking, keep mcgoldrick, nothing changes, get up to 8 million and the whole team could change dramatically and who else is going to raise that sort of money? It's a little bit too close to the transfer window to do much now so will be gutted if we lose him and don't replace him

Although where's the money promised for Cresswell? Or wickham? Personally I would take the risk or risk being a very average championship team for many years to come because eventually we will get left behind. Teams are spending stupid money now in the championship, fulham have an 11 million pound striker, Blackburn have an 8 million pound striker

Take the risk!

And welcome to deadline day! Lots of speculation, wouldn't surprise me if none of it came to pass. In an odd way it'll be interesting to be a part of all the nonsense tomorrow. Not a lot has happened to us in the last few!! :)

Well can't see 8 million being turned down, would love Mcgoldrick to stay but if he leaves will wish him the best of luck!

Why the hell would we want another Hunt? Stephen is no good as it is, if he's any sort of indication as to what we'd be getting, steer clear of Noel

I would rather take the £6.5m and get a player like Chris Wood or Jamie Vardy in return it would mean there is no rush to panic buy and these two guys are easily high Championship quality, dont know what others think but Wood and Vardy are easily worth over £1.5m?

Is this a joke, replacing top scorer david mcgoldrick with the likes of a 17 year striker with no proven record or noël hunt who is a waste of time, no time to reinvest, kevin bru is not a striker either, we are really going to struggle up front this season

OMG Mick we have Conor, Murf and Kevin Bru what are you talking about.Get a proven goalscorer if Didsy goes dont create a player thats not real.If WE get anywhere near 8 mill build a football team Mick, one that plays on grass..

oldegold added 03:55 - Sep 1
If we were to sell him,how can we expect to be protagonists and challenge promotion without a recognised goalscorer? Under MM,we play a very sterile, defensive type soccer with the emphasis on not conceding goals and playing for a draw whereas we have seen that the teams that get promoted from the Championship are attack minded and play with verve and dash. We can't let him go as it will reduce our already depleted goalscoring prowess. We need initiative and to be bold.We must hold onto him.

This is what could be our kieron dyer moment when burley was in charge. If we get 8 million for didz, as good as he has been for us, we have to take it. He is in the last year of his contract and has possibly been unsettled as a result of all this. Would he remain committed to us?? He is what we needed at the time and we signed him on a free. Before he joined us he had 1 prolific half season loan at coventry, in league 1 and then a good loan spell with us, thats why we signed him perm. He did great for us last season and was a shame he got injured, but we rely far too much on him. 8 million if reinvested properly could help us reach the play offs at least!!

Len_Brennan added 05:03 - Sep 1
Any deal for Didz, from Leicester at this stage, has to include Chris Wood surely. He's a good player, a proven goalscorer at Championship level and Leicester were willing to let him go earlier in the summer, even before they had a new striker lined up.
I had been thinking we should go for him before Sammon was brought in, as hr has the attributes we needed, but now it's an absolute must. Murphy is a decent, hard working forward, but is unlikely to match his performance at the end of last season, leaving us with Sammon (on loan), Bajner (who cannot player more than 40 minutes, poorly) and a possible 17 year old (on loan), oh not to mention Nouble who is on the transfer list because he is not good enough, as our options for a team already devoid of goalscoring potential.
Chris Wood on a permanent deal as an absolute minimum please Mick.

I know it would be a blow but as we had him on a free it would be too good to turn down. Take the money and invest in January. In the meantime get this Armstrong from Newcastle as a young player may give us pace and maybe get Walters back from Stoke. He is out of favour and as we know a quality striker.

In Midfield sign someone like Williams to bring creativity on loan and maybe Garvan or Collison too. More competition in midfield that would bring out more from Hyam, Bru and Skuse.

Think now with Parr in the mix and a good defence we can really get the season going and if the loans are successful sign them up in January and if needed strengthen more.

Don't forget the add ons from Cresswell may come in at the end of the season to balance the books and if MM takes a gamble who knows.

What will be will be no matter what fans say on here Marcus and Mick will do what they want as normal how many times have we be told thee money will be reinvested then nothing
If David wants to go good luck to him Ipswich are bigger than one player but why get seventeen year old from Newcastle when we have Marriott champing at the bit wake up Mick you see what our younger players can do on Saturday now build on it .

werderbremenblue added 06:32 - Sep 1
Agree with battyblue, why bring in a young striker on loan from another club when we have a good young hungry prospect of our own, give the lad a chance. Just take the 8m, try and sign a couple of players today to see us through till jan and use the money to strengthen then, clubs will only bump there price up today cos they will know we are desperate.

I thought Bru was a midfielder mick?
I'm sure McGoldrick will be sold if 8 million if offered.
Williams would be good to sign & think noel hunt is pretty good!!
Please keep hold of smith he's a very important player for us.
I'm sure mick has a good replacement in mind for McGoldrick!

“We've signed Conor Sammon and we got Murph and Kevin Bru and we'll just have to see what we've got,”

What about Bajner? I suspect he is not impressing given that transfer-listed Nouble came on in preference of him Saturday.

WorcesterBlue added 08:01 - Sep 1
Have to say that I agree this would be good business for the club, though clearly we'd need replacements asap as we are threadbare already. Obvious answers are Chris Woods (as part of the deal) and Williams again in which case we'd look fairly decent (if Mick learns from Saturday and plays footballers not athletes).
Big question for me is, with so many players being shown the door or sent on loan and no signings of any note since Cressie's departure, has Mick had an understanding about the likes of Williams and possibly another prem loanee already - i.e. a plan - or are we ,as I'm beginning to suspect, as useless in the transfer market as we have been since Magic left?

Wood + 6 mil please. Then sign williams 7 mil from cresswell 6 from mcoldrick has to be enough. This team would get us promoted:

Gerken
Chambers Berra Smith Parr
Hyam
Anderson Stewart
Williams
Wood Murphy

Just don't sell anyone else!

Everyone pretty optimistic that this money will be reinvested into the playing squad, not overly convinced of that. How much have we seen spent of the £11million we got for wickham and cresswell. We will really have nothing going forward unless mick brings in a replacement very quickly but can't off the top of my head think of anyone we could bring in? Definitely thought if we were to have any ambition we should have brought in someone along time ago such as Callum Wilson scoring goal after goal at Coventry. Micks been waiting for these loans to become available, I was hoping that would mean Patrick Bamford but we've already missed out on him. We're hard enough to watch with didz have no idea what we'll be like without him!

GoldieBlue added 08:30 - Sep 1
Your all deluded if you think any good will come from selling mcgoldrick. The money will not be reinvested in the squad and certainly not in this transfer window. Haven't seen a penny from cresswell Money yet. Mick will no doubt hide behind financial fair play rules, and for another year we will be a mid table championship side.

Cambonbleu added 08:37 - Sep 1
McGoldrick is our best player and he's a decent striker at this level but for £8 million we shouldn't think twice - take the money!! That's a huge amount of cash for someone (rumoured) to be in the last year of his contract. If he's going, lets get it confirmed as early as possible to allow MM at least some time to bring in a replacement. I don't know if I have a deluded sense of optimism but the fact that MM unearthed McGoldrick and improved him imeasurably makes me think he could do it again. Alternatively, swap him for Chris Wood & some cash - that'd be a great bit of business

jas0999 added 08:40 - Sep 1
We surely must have known there would be interest for McGoldrick? Therefore, I would have expected the club to have a more permanent solution lined up if they intend to sell. They have had since Friday to get something sorted - that's when we knew McGoldrick may be on his way (ME and MM probably longer). These 'Emergency Loans' are great for cover - not to replace your only real class goal threat. Sammon and Murphy may score 7-8 between them before January - they are not prolific. If we sell McGoldrick, with Creswell already gone - plus 4 other permamnet players out on loan; we really should be signing permament players to replace. It's very disappointing if we don't. People have fallen for the 'spin' of there isn't enough time to replace. We should have planned. We have had all pre-season and now find we have less players than last season. This McGoldrick situation wouldn't have happened over night.

karls_dad added 08:44 - Sep 1
It will happen, likely to be around 7.25 with the usual add on /clauses, and as usual we will not be told, it was good business and McGoldrick wanted to play at the highest level and we as a club will not stand in his way etc, as for replacement, loans loans loans, maybe come January we may get a cheap striker but by then the season is all but done and no time to recover the lost points.......yawn another season wasted!
But we always have Nouble, now there,s a thought? enough to frighten any pub team!
