Mings Will Be Offered New Deal
Tuesday, 2nd Sep 2014 12:48

Boss Mick McCarthy has revealed that Crystal Palace target Tyrone Mings will be offered a new contract. Yesterday, the Blues turned down a £2.5 million offer from the Eagles for the 21-year-old left-back.

Mings, who joined the Blues from non-league Chippenham Town in December 2012, is currently contracted until the summer of 2015 with the club having an option for a further season.

“We have discussed the possibility, rather the certainty should I say, of giving Tyrone a new contract, and that will be the case,” McCarthy told the club site.

“That is the reward for getting in the team and doing well. Neither Marcus, nor I wanted him to go. We want him here for the long term.

“I want to keep my best players. I want to keep the young, exciting players and Ty is one of them.

“When you look at Saturday and see Tyrone and Alex Henshall working really well down the left side, that is a really exciting partnership if we can get them playing like that every week.”

Good old agents.

'Tyrone. Palace have offered a few million for you. I'll be speaking to Ipswich now and telling them if they don't quadruple your wages now you'll force a move in January, sulk, hobble off for the Under 21's and post childish pictures on instagram'.

'Tyrone. How does £5k a week sound instead of your current £1.25k. All sorted'.

This is what we want to hear Mick.

I can fully understand why Ty might find this attention harder to come to terms with with than the more experienced Didz. He couldn't wish for a more obvious role model, given that both have been in a similar situation over the past few days.

Would have preferred Mick to cuff him round the ear and remind him where he was 18 months ago, and to be grateful for the opportunity that thousands of other young players would give their right arms for.

Sounds like a sensible plan. He's a young player with great potential, gives us two decent options in what could have been a problem area after Cressy left, and means he becomes a better financial asset and raw prospect to develop for the club. I don't begrudege him some more cash - we'd all do the same in his position - as long as he continues putting in the hours working, improving and giving back to the community who pay his wage - be that a couple of tickets on social media or most important of all, playing a big part in getting 3 points, game in, game out.

He was a back up player; now he's becoming a first team regular. Deserves a pay rise to go with it IMHO.

I think he's got great potential, and so it would appear, do Palace. I think it's sensible to get him on a new (long) contract now. It will increase his value later on, and make it less likely he'll be tempted away in January.

Sensible management. Little doubt the deal on offer will make it clearer to Mings what value we put on him as a club and the agent would do best to fight for a realistic release clause in terms of bid received. The club might be advised to ensure that any value in such a clause rises year on year as the contract lasts. The lad looks a real prospect and other clubs have quickly caught on to this. His temperament and relationship with the fans (up until the last few days) has been fantastic too.

Yes, I think you may be on the verge there of understanding how pay negotiations work in football. Not just football really, but pay negotiations in general. The weird sulking and Instagram stuff aside, yes, it tends to be that someone comes in and values one of your best assets, you decide you want to keep that asset, you then offer them more money to keep them because they're performing well, etc.

Unless you think we should bloody-mindedly keep a promising and coveted young player on his original wages, which would then force him elsewhere to find a more competitive wage... sorry, what was your point again?

lay off tyrone i think he sounded a very decent chap on the radio and is still a very young man who was playing for chippenham a while back lets not forget...do you think that mick would keep him if he was a problem?? i personally think he is one of the most exciting talents we have had for some time...power pace great tackler i wonder what the legend kevin beattie thinks!

We have to get Didz and Berra on long term contracts now. We cant afford for them to walk for free next summer.
Personally i would have taken the 2.5 mill as i believe taking Williams on loan till January was part of the deal and we have Parr to play left back but giving Mings a new contract means if anybody comes sniffing in January they will have to pay through the nose to get him.

@Blue Armee - Having met Mings, he really does not have the sense of entitlement you are attributing to him and comes across as genuinely grateful for the chance he's been given at Ipswich.

well deserved contract increase for mings.

but interesting that we are turning down offers of 2.5m for players who are not guaranteed starters.

2 Sky Sports games - 2 reasonable performances and all of a sudden you worth £2.5M!! - the crazy world of football and the Premier League. Who would have thought that last season.

Nice to see us improving these players and then big clubs wanting to take them, shows what a bit of coaching instead of selling does

£2.5 MILLION?!??!? That is insane. I said after the Fulham match that Mings looked out of his depth. Since then his performances have been getting better and better. He was excellent against Norwich and showed real maturity. But seriously, from Chippenham to £2.5 million in 18 months. Who the hell do we think we are to turn down that kind of money. We shouldn't get dragged in by all the bull going on around us. Take the 2.5. Put Parr on the left and bring back Vesseli for cover. Then buy a midfielder in January or use the money to loan someone gamechanging.

thebeat .......... little chance of us getting McGoldrick on a longer term contract unless we prove to him we are SERIOUS contenders for the Premiership - he will have serious ambition to play there at his age - and who can blame him for that ?

What he will need 'right now' is belief in the Club that we want to be there - and genuinely mean business.
Not so sure that will happen any time soon.

Fair point blueboy1981 but he knows theres a good chance somebody will come in for him in January if he repeats last seasons form so he might be tempted to take a wage rise for 4 months until that happens, it would also of course strengthen our position for negotiating a better price for him if and when it happens.
Im concerned about Berra, talk of a new contract for him months ago but nothing so far.

@Guthrum: You are basing your opinion after meeting the young man, I respect that. I am sure he comes across well face to face, while meeting supporters of our club. However on social media I believe he doesn't do himself any favours in the way he comes across, for example posting a picture and making comments after not getting his move to Palace, and in the past being quite abusive in his posts. On the flip side, tickets for supporters and repaying supporters for shirts after his number change are very commendable.

My opinion is that he needs a little guidance in some of his behaviours, and who better than Mick to guide him. Hopefully it will help him come across in a better light.

As a player his performances this season (and yes I to attend matches) have been ok but far from exceptional, he needs to learn his trade at Championship level as Cressy did before getting too upset about missing out on a move to the Premier League after only five games this season.

Spot on Blue Armee.

Mings is young and I am sure he is a really decent lad. Just needs a bit of guidance. Remember him giving time up last Christmas to help the needy
