McCarthy Confident McGoldrick Up For Fight
Tuesday, 2nd Sep 2014 12:56

Manager Mick McCarthy is confident that striker David McGoldrick will be “up for the fight” with Town, despite missing out on a move to Premier League Leicester. The Blues rebuffed bids which are understood to have reached the £7 million mark for the 26-year-old ahead of the closure of the transfer window yesterday.

“I thought it might go through but obviously I’m delighted that Didz is still with us," McCarthy told the club site.

“He probably has a tinge of disappointment at the moment. That would be natural but he’ll get on with it.

“He’s much loved by the players here, by the staff, by the fans and we all wanted him to stay.

“Didz wants to play in the Premier League and I know he’d like to do that with Ipswich. Whether that can happen this season, we will find out — won’t we?

“He has been a great player for us and he will be up for the fight. I expect him to continue just the same as he has always done since he first walked through the door here.”

As previously reported, although it was announced that McGoldrick had signed a two-year contract when he joined the Blues following his release by Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2013, the deal included an option of an additional year, which the club will take up, effectively meaning he is contracted until the end of June 2016.

The money was tempting, but it doesn't guarantee success, either for Town or for the player. With the loans there is now space in the squad and money for wages for a top quality loan player or two, while giving our recent young signings and best academy players the chance to shine. Maybe yesterday another corner was turned in the long recovery of our great club.

My view: Although £8M is a very decent whack, we wouldn't have been able to buy a replacement during this window - or at least it would've been very unlikely. If Didz gets back to full fitness and we're in with a shout come January, he'll hopefully be able to stay. If we're not, but he's still scoring, he may still be wanted by a Prem club at that stage. Let's face it, we'd be even more threadbare if he left now. I'm gald he's staying. Money isn't everything and can be easily frittered away - just ask Messrs Keane and Jewell.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money he won't play in the Premiership for Ipswich this season ...

A positive aspect of us keeping David is that not only is he a proven goal scorer and creator of opportunities, he is a known commodity to team mates as well as management. A new striker may take a very long time to gel.
I'm good with this outcome so long as we get a couple of loan players in to get our midfield properly equipped and get our (forward) passing game going. This will be necessary to climb the table and put bums in seats.

8 million a very tempting offer and to be honest when I heard that the move was cancelled I was slightly disappointed. McGoldrick is my favourite town player however, 8 million is a ludicrous bid for a unproven decent CHAMPIONSHIP player who isn't even particularly young. Now I see that we wouldn't have got a decent replacement anyway, I'm happy we have kept him, but it feels like an offer like that will never come again for McGoldrick or for any of our players. Very happy that Mings has stayed.

Now that the dust has settled on another transfer window, time to reflect.
Have unloaded Frank Nouble who is not good enough for Championship footy, despit plenty of chances.
Mick Mc Carthy has built a squad where we have players that are worth serious money once more.
Marcus Evans realises that selling these players will not get us promoted.
It looks like Bishop and Bru could solve the midfield problem.
Hopefully will get in a decent striker on loan and possibly another midfielder.
Finally will we see more attractive footy? This I am not so sure about;. but we now have the players to replace the boring Cole Skuse, and our Captain who is not suited to the right back berth.
How nice it would be if against Millwall if we saw an Ipswich team that set up to take the game to the opposition instead of trying to negate them.
Over to you Mick.

Never ceases to amaze me how people don't actually read the story. Time and time again people just see/hear what they want and meets their agenda, rather than the facts. Some recent popular myths dispelled;

We did not turn down £8m for McGoldrick. Nobody bid that much.

McGoldrick is not in the final year of his contract. He essentially has two years left as the club hold the option on the extra year.

There has been no confirmation that Palace bid £2.5m for Mings. It is believed that this is the figure Town quoted them when they asked about him.

Ian Milne never said the Cresswell money would be spent on players. He said it would be "reinvested in the club".

Marcus Evans has not pocketed the Cresswell money. It is likely earmarked to cover the £3m reduction in owner contributions this season under FFP (down from £6m last season to £3m this season).

SoupsrJim- that's almost all correct, although Ian said reinvested in squad not club. Big difference!

He won't get premier league football with us next season. Squad too small to sustain a promotion challenge. Lacks the creativity from last season.

by what you said about FFP we have been constantly told now through near enough the whole mccarthy era that we are doing it. if so tht means the cresswell money is spare cash if the ambition is there will be spent straight on improving the squad?

Club or squad means more or less the same to me. The point Souper Jim was making is that some seemed to think what was said ment that Mick had 3m to spend on transfer fees! not so.

Seasider - Agreed! - It is all very well for MM to say HE is confident Dids "will be “up for the fight” with Town" but only Dids knows how he feels in all this. Put yourseves in his shoes: the opportunity to live in your own home where you come from and gain a much higher salary, so how would you feel if your way was blocked by youir present employer? I am certain Dids will still play well for us because he is a professional footballer, but will his heart be in the job as it was last year? I for one very much doubt it. IMO a team is built on two way respect and trust and Dids, again IMO, should have been offered the choice of going or staying at the offered price. If he decided to stay then he would be one of our future cornerstones. If this was Evan's decision then he is no more cognizant of what makes things tick than he has previously shown to be with his erratic hire and fire policy - particularly the hire bit. I do not think I shall live to see the Town get out of the trap of this awful division unless it is downwards.

Absolute crazy gamble to turn down any offer over 6 million for a player who cost nothing & is still recovering from a serious injury. If you look at his stride the injury is still an issue & may be something he doesn't fully recover from, with that in mind Leicester could have bought a lame horse or we may never again see his goal return of last season .
It would have been one of our best value sales had it gone through & with the revenue we could have speculated on several up & coming younger players from the lower divisions that know where the back of the net is(something we're in dire need of) rather than sitting around waiting for some agent to come along & offer us somebody's reject.
If you ended up with one Vardy (£1 million) it would have been worth it.
