McCarthy: Taylor Never Showed Enough at Town
Friday, 5th Sep 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says Blues striker Paul Taylor never showed the type of form which is winning him rave reviews at loan club Rotherham United while with Town. The 26-year-old joined the South Yorkshire side three weeks ago and has impressed in his four games for the Millers.

Following their recent 1-0 win at Millwall, in which Taylor created the winning goal, Rotherham boss Steve Evans told their official site: “He’s been terrific every day I’ve seen him, he was at Peterborough, which is why he went for £1.5 million to Ipswich Town.”

He added: “Paul’s a player we’ve always liked and we convinced him to come here and he was excellent [at Millwall].”

McCarthy says he’s aware that Taylor has his fans but says the summer of 2012 signing from Posh didn’t show that sort of form when in his Town side.

“He’s there until January sometime,” McCarthy said. “I know there are a lot of people who have got a really good feel for Paul Taylor, there’s nothing I can do about that.

“I haven’t seen it in my team, whenever he’s played, whether he’s started or gone on as a sub. If I had I wouldn’t have let him go.

“Maybe however he’s playing at Rotherham suits him. I think he played wide on the left against Millwall.

“I don’t know how many glowing reports he’s getting but good luck to him because he’s still our player when all’s said and done.”

Taylor is joined at the New York Stadium by fellow loanee Anthony Wordsworth, while ex-Blues loan duo Paul Green and Frazer Richardson joined the Millers in the summer, as did keeper Scott Loach after settling his contract at Portman Road.

The Liverpudlian, who scored only one goal in nine starts and 16 sub appearances for the Blues and is yet to net for the Millers, is out of contract at the end of the season.

It's not true he never showed that form for Mick. He got more MOM awards on this website than anybody for the games he played in. That isn't anti mick or being a moaner, it's just true.

I thought when he signed it was a 3.5 year contract?

there is doubt he can play, the real problem here, and it`s not necessarily wrong,is Super Micks character and what seems to a genuine dislike of the lad.
His time was done at ITFC when he got done for ABH.

Pity but that`s life

Agree with mick, he never showed anything like mom form here. He has obviously gone to Rotherham with a point to prove. The interesting thing will be to see how long it lasts.

It's nice to see him play well. I would've liked him to show it more while he's been at Ipswich so he could get more game time but ah well. When he comes back though, we do have positive things we can do, we can either give him another chance or try and sell him for at least a bit of £££.

The answer is simply that Rotherham and Evans try to play the game with the ball on the ground. MM cannot change his style and therefore Taylor will not fit in. We should look to build the team around him but it will never happen and MM is to arrogant to admit he is wrong on this subject.

Mick, I truly do not know how old you are but you have the mental age of about a seven year old. If you do not like somebody it means they are no good. It would appear that you are a yes man too because, unfortunately, you were allowed to sign an extension to your contract and by the time that expires I sincerely hope there is still an Ipswich Town Football Club in existence.

Sorry, I missed a piece out. Mick says: "I haven't seen it in my team whenever he's played — whether that's starting or coming off the bench. If I had I wouldn't have let him go.!" - Mick wasn't he MOM on a couple of occasions during the very brief number of times you played him, then immediately dropped which caused quite a furore on this board?

Taylor is a big fish in a little pool now . Just as he was at Posh. He NOW feels at "home" and the king pin. At Town that was not the case. He was not top dog. Although had he put his mind to it , it could have been, Im sure of that. Some players just cant hack the step up to a bigger club. Sad but true.

MM has done many good things for the club, the zero cost acquisition of Dids and Berra being his stand out achievements, but this is a horrendous blind spot for him that undermines all that. Taylor may be a horrible piece of work but he undoubtedly has talent and that talent DID manifest itself on the pitch on the rare occasions when he was grudgingly given his chance. It usually resulted in him being dumped back in the reserves. So, whilst the likes of Nouble, Tabb, Anderson, Hunt were given game after game after game to show absolutely nothing but their stamina, Taylor (& Wordsworth) were frozen out. You could maybe justify this if you said we had other talent to burn but the plain fact is our one dimensional midfield hasn't got a pass or a goal in it and we can scarcely afford to wave away talent like this however moody or delinquent it is. I hope the club has been sensible enough to ensure he is not allowed to play us in the upcoming fixture.........

The only game he started at home last season he was motm and MM said if he continued in that form he would stay in the team. The following game he was taken off at ht and never seen again. It's rubbish to say he never showed it here. Just wasn't given a chance to show it consistently imo

He gave Stephen Hunt a new contract who struggles to play at all, he plays a similar role to Taylor if he thinks he is better than Taylor , i must be blind.

He has shown flashes of talent but to be honest, for other reasons I don't want him at our club, so sooner he goes the better.

Jay tabb or Paul Taylor on the left?

martleshamitfc added 08:28 - Sep 5
Surely if a players goes out on loan and plays really well, then as a club we would want him back? Cannot see that happening so just hope it inflates his transfer fee... again cannot see that happening, we will probably just off load him on a free transfer!!

I agree with 9 out of 10 MM comments generally. But this comment of MMs is nonsense. Taylor was one of the better performers each time he was given a chance.

If he's had a go at you MM then say he's been shown the door for disciplinary reasons then. Don't say it's because of footballing reasons, please.

Hopefully we don't sell him and he'll be available for MM's successor
