Town Face Competition for Graham
Tuesday, 9th Sep 2014 09:19

Town are amongst a number of Championship clubs to have approached Sunderland regarding the loan availability of striker Danny Graham, TWTD understands. Reports linking the Blues with the 29-year-old first surfaced over the weekend.

Graham is surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light and looks certain to return to the Championship with clubs able to take players on ‘emergency’ loans of up to 93 days from today. In addition to the Blues, Wolves, Charlton and Leeds are understood to be amongst those interested.

While Graham is believed to be on a wage of £30,000 a week at Sunderland, the Wearsiders are thought to accept that any club taking him on loan would pay only a small proportion of that figure.

Black Cats manager Gus Poyet had hoped that the £5 million January 2013 signing from Swansea would leave on a permanent basis before the transfer window shut last Monday but no deadl was done before the deadline.

Last season Gateshead-born Graham spent time on loan to Hull City and then back at his first club Middlesbrough. While with the Teessiders he scored twice in their 2-0 victory over the Blues at the Riverside in March.

Former England U20 international Graham, who is contracted to Sunderland until June 2016, has also been with Carlisle and Watford and had loan stints early in his career with Darlington, Derby, Leeds and Blackpool, as well as an initial temporary spell with the Cumbrians.

Town, who are also understood to be targeting the return of former loanee Jonny Williams from Crystal Palace, although with Eagles manager Neil Warnock having played down the chances of the Wales international leaving on loan, look short of a senior striker following Frank Nouble’s deadline day loan move to Coventry City.

Would definitely have him. Would take the pressure of Diddsy to score the goals.

I would be interested but there is one big problem with this loan window if we get anyone today we will only be able to have them till mid December this could seriously unbalance the squad coming into the busy Christmas period. If we can we need to wait a couple of weeks and get them on 93 days ending in January

This is a quality striker. Get him in quick and then sign him on a perm.

Well, can't see Marriott or Bajner getting much of a look in if we bring in Graham..McGoldrick & Murphy as first choice, then Graham and Sammon.

The team is crying out for more creativity in midfield & a midfielder who can chip in with 7 or 8 goals a season.

I'd rather focus fully on getting Jonny Williams back than another "striker" who can't score.

Certainly has a better goal scoring record that Nouble and would prefer him to Sammon, but seemed to struggle at Prem level. Worth a gamble and might flourish where there is less pressure.

Lightningboy we are capable of going after more than one signing at once. Nonsensical to criticise this move because you think a different position is more important.

I remember him leaving Swansea because he had to move back up north for whatever reason so I can't really see it happening. I'd take him if he's available and paying small amount in wages though.

If Graham came in surely he would be first choice above Murphy ? For me Murphy doesn't score enough when playing with Dids , did extremely well well Dids was injured but doesnt score many when played together .
Why is he another striker who cant score ? He has an excellent strike rate for the championship and was also good for Swansea in the premier league , struggling at one club is not something we should criticise as Town fans , how many signings have flopped for us ?

Graham is a different (higher) class to Murphy.
He was a quality player in the Championship. He will need service from midfield though, like any other striker.

Trying to sign another striker got to question why we bought Sammon and Bajner just squad players once again lack quality if Dids gets injured where are the goals coming from.Main priority is sign a quality midfielder like Jonny who can create and score need to get in quick before others snap him up.

Makes you wonder why we signed Sammon on a season long loan if we're after a striker like Graham (admittedly only for 3 months)? - Still a bit of a risk in my books, once a striker loses confidence it takes something to get it back.
@Geogg - just seen your post, and agree totally!

Nothing about this excited me. Same player as Sammon as others have said.
Williams yes, Graham no. We've got two more interesting strikers out on loan in truth!

As other people keep mentioning him can someone remind me how many goals did Williams score after his spectacular effort on his arrival? ........& how well did the team do after those two games & Wordsworth was dropped & Skuse was brought back in for the remainder of the season.
If you keep playing Skuse or bring back Williams, how will Teddy Bishop get the chance to shine? By the commentary on the radio he was a breath of fresh air against Derby, bring back Williams & another potential talent will be out on loan to get games instead of in the team possibly adding goals to the midfield...........as well as forward passes!

Another question, why do people keep going on about strengthening the squad?
IF, the first choice 11 are good enough then you look for back up in case of injury !
At present they are not up to the task (regarding putting the ball in the back of the net)
so if the player is going to improve the first team sign him if not there's no point in adding more bums to the subs bench.

I agree with Beattiesballbag that space in the team should be found for Teddy Bishop based on what I saw of him at Derby.I feel it would be better for him playing for ITFC even allowing for what will no doubt be occasional indifferent games rather than pushed down the order and maybe out on loan.

agree with Surco72 he would be automatic starter above murphy. there is no comparison to sammon he is twice the player of sammon murphy and banjer.

He is excellent at championship level-maybe he wont score 20 in the prem but cannot understand the negativity by some on here. the bottom line is mcarthy has messed up signing banjer and sammon they are both not good enough.i would have any 2 from mcgoldrick graham marriot and murphy and in that order

Will this merry-go-round ever stop at this club every day springs another surprise.Clearly Mick has lost it and does not know what the hell he is doing. He made a mistake with Salmon no difference than Murf or Nouble at that time and Banjar 40min v Fulham gone also 3 of 4 players loaned or let go and no better or worse taken in.Money is no issue or excuse for putting together an unbalanced squad and point blankly refuse to address the midfield as im waiting for the weekend when Skusey and Hymn together starve our strikers again or when Bishop ans Henstall are warming the bench. Can i add if Grahams talk is true this spells the end of Murf, Marriott ,Banjar,Salmon, what next Mick, I give up....

I think that Danny Graham would improve the team and would be a good loan signing.
Jonny Williams would also improve the team but as there is no way that he would become a permanent signing, an extra three months of Teddy Bishop would be of more long term benefit.
