McCarthy: Ambrose as Good as Anybody Here
Saturday, 13th Sep 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says new signing Darren Ambrose’s ability was no shock to him but that he was surprised that the 30-year-old was in a position where he needed to join the Blues on trial. Yesterday, the former academy player signed a short-term deal until January.

“His technical ability is no surprise to me or any Ipswich fan that knows him or has seen him, they probably know him far better than I do,” McCarthy said.

“I did ask him the question ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ He looked at me and I said ‘What are you doing here, because you’ve got such ability, you’re only 30. Why are you here trialing with us?’

“A bit of a hard-hitting question, you have to think about that one. He’s shown a desire to be here.

“What’s gone wrong for a guy of his ability? Maybe bad decisions, injuries, but he’s fit, he’s got great ability and he’s looked as good as anybody else out there, so I’m thinking ‘Why wouldn’t I?’. And he’s got Ipswich at heart as well, he’s delighted to be back.”

Having added Ambrose and with Teddy Bishop and Kevin Bru breaking into the first team, McCarthy’s midfield options have received a significant boost in recent weeks.

“I thought Kevin was excellent as that number 10 at Derby, he played really well,” the Blues boss enthused. “He’s got really good quality and Teddy was the star man for me, by a street.

“It’s lovely, isn’t it? It’s nice when you’ve got that squad of 20 and any one of them could play. It’s a big decision for me.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy confirmed that he has no current plans to offer a deal to former West Ham man Jack Collison, who like Ambrose trained with the Blues in recent weeks.

He says the Welshman is now looking at other alternatives: “He has been about. I think he’s got other options and he’s going to go and have a look elsewhere.

“I said I was cool with that, whatever he wants to do. If it works out for him, great. If it doesn’t, I’ll still have a look at him.”

on-loan? Thought he was out of contract?

Superb player. We have players now who can really move this club forward.

Was outstanding in the first half against us for Colchester. Should start alongside Bishop against Millwall. Tabb needs to realise that he is not an automatic starter....

I think PJewellisaGod it is MM who needs to realise that Tabb is not an automatic starter, but I know what you mean!

Bishop and bru in midfield? If it works then we are nicely set up.

Sorry my error, not sure where that came from. Short-term contract as mentioned elsewhere in the piece. Amended.

You could argue that Ambrose shouldn't even be on the bench today as he's just signed but he has been training with us for a few weeks, and personally I'd start him over tabb, but I think MM would only do that if parr started ahead of Mings as he wouldn't give Mings the protection he needs.
I'd like to see mick play this today( I'd also like to see henshall start, but I can't see that happening right now with mick)

Don't mean to be down in the mouth about this but I can't help thinking just because Bru and Bishop played fairly well against Derby it doesn't mean all of a sudden we now have a far more potent midfield. In regards to Bishop yes the potential is there and we look like we could have a player for the future but he has played just 1 game although it has to be said a good debut - let's not get too far ahead of ourselves!. But this does give Mick now far more options in midfield than he had with the return of Stewart and Hunt soon, let's just hope it doesn't take Mick all season to get a fairly consistent starting midfield. Most of last season he tinkered around in the wide areas with little success.

As for Ambrose which I have to admit does not seem Mick's 'type' of player, personally believe if he wants to succeed here again he has to be 1. fit 2. injury free. Interesting to note some Birmingham City supporters tweeted the EADT yesterday and were really surprised that Ipswich has signed him again as they could not believe how poor he was when he played for them. Take note.

Bru played in the number 10 role v derby as we were keeping Didsy safe from harm. We cannot play Bishop & Bru in the Middle IMO. If Didsy wasn't so important I'd suggest not tinkering with the side that performed well at derby.
