Striker Daryl Murphy believes Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Millwall has given the Blues a psychological boost ahead of Tuesday’s second home game in four days against Brighton. Murphy stabbed home Town’s second goal in the 63rd minute, David McGoldrick having opened the scoring in first-half injury time.

"It was a good day for us,” the Irishman said. “We had plenty of chance and could have had more.

"I could have scored with a header but the keeper tipped it over and I had a couple of other chances in the second half, but fortunately I got one in the end and we got a win.

"I don't care how they go in. I will take a tap in from two yards any day, it doesn't matter how the come just as long as they come.

"With another home game coming up it’s a big boost psychologically. If we can get six points then it gives us something to build on. We need to take the confidence from this win into Tuesday and hopefully we can do that.”

Murphy not losing strike partner McGoldrick following Leicester’s interest late in the transfer window was also a big lift.

"It is definitely a massive boost for us him staying here,” he added. “He has come back and got his head down.

"Didzy has not mentioned the move at all. He is happy to be here, he knows he is staying and he is giving his all - as we saw today.

"We are both enjoying it out there. We created a bit for each other and had chances and we could have had a hat-trick each, but at least we both got on the score sheet.”

He was also pleased to see Tyrone Mings stay at Portman Road despite Crystal Palace’s moving for the 21-year-old left-back: "Tyrone is in the right place to progress. The gaffer has been brilliant with him and he respects the gaffer and listens.

“If he is going to progress then this is the place it will happen. He has come on leaps and bounds and that is down to him as well. He wants to improve, get better and that's all you can ask from a young player.”

Both Murphy and McGoldrick netted their second goal of the season on Saturday, but Christophe Berra is still ahead of the Blues’ first-choice strike pair on three.

"We can't let the defenders getting all the glory, especially when it is Berra because he never shouts up about it,” Murphy said.

“He has been top scorer for a few weeks now and we need to get ahead of him.”

The 31-year-old also had praise for home debutant Teddy Bishop: "Teddy was brilliant. He started against Derby as well and when the gaffer said he was starting not an eyebrow was raised.

“He was brilliant again today and it shows we have some very good players coming through and if you are good enough then the gaffer will give you your chance.”

Former Blues skipper Carlos Edwards thought his Millwall side was worth a point on his return to Portman Road: "It was disappointing coming back and losing. I felt we did well and had our chances but didn't take them. I thought we deserved at least a draw.

"The difference was in the finishing. That's what Didzy is all about and they made the most of their chances.

"We have had a good start to the season and that was probably just a hiccup but we need to go out on Tuesday, put this behind us, and perform.

"We have dropped out of the top group but we are not far behind. It is a long season but we can't afford to drop points and start having to play catch up.”

He added: "I'm enjoying myself at Millwall. I'm playing, having fun. I had a great time with Ipswich but I have moved on now as often happens in football."

The 35-year-old believes the Blues may struggle to hang on to McGoldrick if he continues his recent form.

"Ipswich have managed to keep Didzy for now but I'm not sure how he will feel about that after having a chance to play in the Premier League,” the Trinidad and Tobago international added.

"Ipswich have good players like Didzy and if he carries on playing like that then of course it will be difficult for them to keep hold of him."

He may think Millwall are genuine contenders, but he is in the minority... 12th at best, which to be fair would be a very good season after the poor time they have had? We will finish well above Millwall.
