U21s Win at Charlton But Stewart Suffers Knock
Monday, 15th Sep 2014 16:25 by James Ager

A strong Town U21 side - including Stephen Hunt, Darren Ambrose and Cameron Stewart - secured a 1-0 victory at Charlton Athletic on Monday afternoon with centre-half Omar Sowunmi (pictured) heading home a late winner.

Town were forced into an early change midway through the first half when Stewart - playing his first game following six weeks out with a broken jaw - was replaced by Cory Galvin after picking up an injury to his right knee.

Soon after, Michael Crowe produced a superb flying save to tip Zak Ansah's curling effort wide of a post.

Mark Kennedy's side, who were watched throughout by Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor, created more chances in the second half with Monty Patterson's 20-yard shot and close range header forcing Addicks keeer Dillon Phillips into two sharp saves.

Kadell Daniel turned and hit an effort that struck the foot of a Town post, before Harry Gerrard cut in from the right and curled an effort which also rebounded off Michael Crowe’s woodwork.

Phillips did well to push Ambrose's long-range drive away from danger, but he was powerless to stop Sowunmi's winner with four minutes remaining.

Kundai Benyu, a first-year academy scholar, was fouled just outside the area and Hunt's delivery to the far post was met by an unmarked Sowunmi, who powered his header into the net to claim his second goal in two games.

Town withheld late pressure from the Addicks to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. Kennedy’s side have now taken 10 points from their first four games, while their three wins already equals their total for the whole of last season.

Youngster Benyu impressed throughout in central midfield, while Hunt was a constant threat and will have been pleased to get 90 minutes under his belt.

U21s: Crowe, Robinson (Emmanuel 80), Wyatt, Benyu, Sowunmi, Clarke, Stewart (Galvin 23), Ambrose, McQueen, Patterson (McLoughlin 71), Hunt. Unused: Marsden, Willbye.

I reckon we could see Hunty on the bench against Wigan next monday.

the centre halfs at this club could certainly show the midfielders a thing or two about scoring!

Do we know how bad Stewarts injury is? Such a shame if he is out for a while

Doesn't get any better for Cameron Stewart, does it. Getting a little concerned that we'll just never see much of him at this rate.

So I'm guessing Ambrose didn't have a great game then as he doesn't even get a mention!! Hopefully he's just short of match fitness, as I'd love to see him playing again in the first team.

Oh dear. Stewart looking like one of those signings which through no ones fault, may not play many games!

Well done Sowunmi. Was impressed when I first saw him play for the youth, now he's adding goals to that.

Friend of mine went to the game. Said Crowe was superb, Ambrose, Benyu and Wyatt- excellent, Sowunmi, Clarke, McQueen: all good.

Hunt ran his socks off and looks desperate to win his place back in the first team.
Wyatt or Ambrose as MOM.

3 30 odd yard drives from Ambrose, all saved by Keeper who had a good game for the addicks.

Oh: Stewart injury. Barely touched: those at game were shocked that he had to come off. Hard to know whether he had pulled a ligament etc. Sadly, he barely touched the ball in his time on the pitch.

Would love to see Stewart in action for our first team soon so he can show us what we have been missing. Hope it's not another Civelli in the making.

Predicition: By May, Teddy Bishop is in the England U-21s, and Crowe replaces Gerken as 1st choice and wins his first full Norway cap. Optimistic perhaps??

Sad about Stewart. And its getting harder what with youngsters pushing Tabb and Anderson for the wide positions.
