McCarthy: Two Victories a Good Haul
Tuesday, 16th Sep 2014 22:57

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with Town’s six-point haul from their back to back home games against Millwall and Brighton.

“It’s been a successful few days,” he said. “Two 2-0 victories is a good haul from two home games.”

The Blues boss had praise for keeper Dean Gerken for making an important stop from Lewis Dunk’s header early in the second half.

“Gerks made a good save when we messed up,” he said. “I can’t think of many others he made, I think the other fella made as many in the end. I think he’s proved to be a really good signing for us.”

But it was left-back Tyrone Mings who grabbed most of the headlines with his most impressive performance for the Blues yet, the 21-year-old creating Jonny Parr’s opening goal in the 79th minute.

“Between him and Alex Henshall [they set up the goal], I thought Alex’s input into it was great, he could have whizzed it in and tried to do something but he set him up nicely.

“The decision to play two attacking full-backs worked today, one crossed it, one scored it.”

The Town manager was impressed with the energy Mings showed in both home matches: “He had to come off in one of the early games, he was getting cramp in one of them. I think it was a bit of nervous energy.

“I’ve said before about how it’s his position now, his to lose. He’s a fit lad and he’s a good guy.”

McCarthy said he never wavered when turning down Crystal Palace’s deadline day bid, now understood to have been £3 million plus further top-ups: “No, not for sale, which made it easy, didn’t it?

“He’s showing why I want him in my team, I want him playing for me. He’s not going anywhere else, no amount of shekels, dollars, euros or pounds is going to make any difference to me.

“I want players we’ve picked up from relatively obscurity, we’ve got him in the team, and helped him become a player and I want him to help us become a good team.”

He says Mings, who joined the Blues from Chippenham in December 2012, has shown the right attitude since the bid was turned down: “He wants to play, that’s the issue. He’s playing and for the last two games he’s played in a winning team and that’s where he wants to be.

“He’s going to develop here. He might have gone to the Premier League and never played. He might have gone to the Premier League and got ripped asunder, who knows?

“He’s developing. What was it, 18 months ago we paid 10 grand or something for him and sent a team down and played against them.”

Mings even came close to his first senior goal with a deft flick which David Stockdale saved superbly: “He made a great save on that but I think he might be questioning himself about the Murph one, as great a strike as it was,” McCarthy added.

Brighton boss Sami Hyypia was pleased with his team's display if not the result: "I am not too unhappy about the performance but of course I am unhappy that we lost - I want to win every game.

"The players want to win games but that time will come. We have to be patient and work hard in everything we do.

"We need to get some points but the league position doesn't really matter at the moment. But I know we are already a bit behind and we can't fall too far behind."

I'd have bitten Neil Warnock's hand off this time two weeks ago for £3 million. I'd have also wondered what Mick was smoking considering Mings' early season timidness. Now, however, our young left back is looking the business and I have to give it to McCarthy - that's why he's a football manager.

In Mick we trust.

Think Micks been a bit harsh on Gerks saying he didnt make many other saves, He made some great saves in the first half and was probably my man of the match, thats saying a lot considering im probably his biggest critic usually

So Mings who had hardly played a game with us is already worth nearly the amount we got for Cresswell. I really am enjoying watching Mings, big, strong and can run and dribble with the ball superbly! I'm really excited at the prospect of having him and Henshall down that left, even our right side has improved a lot since last season with what will hopefully be a Parr and Stewart partnership. Looking good!

Brilliant all round but you have to feel for Tommy Smith in all this ... does nothing wrong and suddenly he's a bench warmer waiting for someone to get injured. But he is a true pro who loves Town (enough to treasure time or from international duty) and he will be here for a long long time as a top man and future captain.

(Can't comment on the game as wasn't there but my evening "brightened" up with two high moments on the footmob App)

Agree on Mings. Looks the complete package at left back. Skuse is probably a little lucky to be keeping his place over Hyam for me?

Also not fully convinced by Parr as a right back. Can see that his right foot is clearly his weaker side as he often turns inside to clear. Much more comfortable as a full back to be able to turn out onto your right foot and clear the ball up the line. Same when he gets forward & ball played back to him for a first time cross (compared to Mings on other side whipping in first time balls with pace)

Feel a bit for tommy smith, Hyam and also Hewitt who have done nothing wrong but found themselves out of the team however none of us can argue with two wins and none conceded !

Suddenly the season looks back on track. A week really is a long time in Championship football. COYB!!

Mings looks better and better every game. Thought he was the stand out player last night. Great going forward and strong in his defensive duties. made a couple of mistakes but certainly learning and making the most of his opportunity. First half he smashed in few lovely crosses and almost scored with a sweet flick in the 2nd half. Impressive !

Bishop is definitely one for the future and is looking brilliant in the centre. I think he could of been fed the ball a bit more last night as on a few occasions he was in great position but we chose different options. Really excited by him.

Gerks made 3 decent saves to keep us in it to be fair. But then we did have 3 or 4 good chances too.

Thought we were untidy for 30 mins of second half but the goal was deserved overall. Murphs strike was brilliant.

Thought Skuse was well below his usual performances and would love to see Hyam start instead of him.

Didz is class but thought he had a fairly quieter game than usual.

Great result in the end.

Everyone one had a good game, average first half but second was better.
One player who needs to improve though is skuse, how is he still in the starting 11 after recent performances? Centre mids should be Hyam and bishop. Skuse has two directions of play, sideways and backwards. We still need someone who can pass the ball forward like bishop is showing he can. Hyam must be gutted looking at skuse playing terrribly and getting a game before him
Also feeling for smith, a true blue that has been dropped after not doing a lot wrong, but two clean sheets so maybe mick knows what he's doing!

Interesting comment Mick: -

"McCarthy said he never wavered when turning down Crystal Palace's deadline day bid"

I thought it was Marcus who turned down the bids...

Who ever it was though good call....

Just remember it's Russel Osman you want to thank for bringing Mings to Portman Road!

Why does our season start after the transfer window shuts? We're now 6 points adrift as per usual.
