McCarthy Will Take Care With Bishop
Saturday, 20th Sep 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy is delighted with 18-year-old Teddy Bishop’s impact since he came into the side at Derby, but won’t overplay the midfielder during his first season in the senior side.

The Town manager says he weighed-up whether to leave the academy product out of Tuesday’s victory over Brighton, the game having come so soon after the home win against Millwall.

“I considered taking him out having played on Saturday, he’s never played at that intensity before, certainly not on a Saturday and then a Tuesday,” he said.

“I just decided against it and thought that if he starts to struggle I’d take him off. And to be fair he didn’t up until when I took him off in the 72nd minute.

“They were just starting to get through the middle of us, I could see he was tiring and I thought I’d put Luke Hyam on which toughened us up a little bit.

“And also by toughening us up in the middle it gave Alex Henshall a little bit more freedom.”

He added: “I’m delighted with his impact so far. I picked him and re-picked him and picked him again, so it’s clear I’m pleased with what he’s doing.

“He’s a very good player but he’s not going to play 40-odd games for us his season, no matter how good he is. He’s not going to be doing that, I don’t want him to be getting injured.

“I’m not going to sit here and mark out which games we’re going to play him in but it’s going to be tough.

“We’ve got these games coming up and then we’ve got a two-week break, so then we all get a chance to have a rest.”

In addition to Bishop's emergence, McCarthy has a number of other new options in midfield: “Hunty’s fit, Darren Ambrose has joined us. It’s great. It’s nice to have some competition.”

Sensible stuff
A safe pair of hands at the tiller
A great young player
And a squad that all of a sudden looks big enough strong enough and more than facially haired enough to mount a sustained challenge in this division
I'd take a point at Wigan though
Got to keep it real in this day and age

I am sorry but do I not agree with this. When I was younger than Teddy is we were soldiers, there was a major war on. If we were any good we quickly became Paratrooper's and Army Commando's etc. and were used mercilessly. It did us no harm but got us extremely fit and filled us with confidence in our ability to achieve the impossible and, just remember, how many young players Mr. Bobby Robson brought forward and played. Has the modern generation become so weak they cannot play two football matches in one week? That very old saying "If you are good enough then you are old enough" is very true and has always been true. So Mick, please start picking your best players, on merit, and stop blethering. COYB

Don't be daft Bluebill, this is football not war. If you really wanted to take that analogy you'd have to accept that an awful lot of kids had thier lives pi**ed away by officers who thought 17 was old enough to fight a war.
We need to look after this one, he's exactly what we need and even if we lose a few points here and there by saving his legs then so be it. We all want a Michael Owen just without his injury problems. Ambrose can step into that role when needed as could Collison if he signs.

Bishop has been excellent, but MM is an experienced manager, so if he says he can't play every game then we need to trust him. Having said that under no circumstances should we start with a negative Skuse/ Hyam central midfield. We need one of the central two to get forward. In fact Skuse gas been so poor this season he shouldn't be considered at all.

Billblue - you, carsey, blueboy and the usual were on here after the Derby match bleating that we wouldn't see Bishop again, he would be loaned out, etc etc. You were wrong. He's played two more games back to back. We all know you don't like MM but you just make yourself look stupid when you twist

It wasn't the playing week in - week out that crippled Kevin Beattie it was the use of cortisone injections and then playing him when he was not fit.

Constantly playing him when fully fit was not the cause of his health problems.

You can't compare football back then with what it is now. The game is more professional and these players are now athletes. They cover so much more ground and the training sessions consequently have to be all the more vigorous as well. I accept that the medical treatment of these players will have also improved.

Take rugby as a good example ... How many of the international players from over 20 years ago would survive the brutal games that are played by the huge players of today?

What a load of cobblers Billblue , what you have written is just utter garbage , apart from training when did you ever run 10k (if you were indeed a para or commando.!!!) and 18 year old is not going to take a battering every 3 days over a sustained period and function and 100% , thats why pass out rates for Juniors in Marine training in so low , MM and his fitness guys have this 100% spot on..you and several others as pointed out just come on here to moan and jack all else , suggest those few go and have tea with Delia

Thereis no doubt the boy is a fantastic talent and we should play him as and when we can as he obviously adds to the team.Players have the best of facilities and these days and are really finely tuned athletes----my dear mum would say they do not need "molly coddling".

Yes it did Fix It. Constantly playing Kevin Beattie when he had knee problems
and giving him injections ended his career prematurely.
Mick knows what he is doing which is more than you can say for our military friends. The first world war is a great example or our clever generals.

I am well aware that it was playing when not fit, and the use of cortisone injections, which ended Beattie's career prematurely. I am also well aware of the danger of overuse injuries and burnout amongst young players. Thankfully, it appears that MM is too and he is quite right to handle this hot property with care.
