McCarthy: There's a Buzz About the Place
Saturday, 20th Sep 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy there’s a well-warranted buzz about Playford Road following this week's back-to-back 2-0 home wins against Millwall and Brighton.

“I’d like to think there’s a buzz about the place more often than not but when you’ve won back-to-back games, and I think played as well as we have, certainly on Tuesday against a really capable team, then I think we’re entitled to have a buzz around the place,” he said.

The Town manager believes the Blues deserved their victory despite keeper Dean Gerken having been forced to make one or two stops, most notably from Albion striker Sam Baldock in the first half: “There’s a lot been made about Dean Gerken’s saves. He made a save after about 20 minutes when we made a mistake and gave them the opportunity.

“Prior to that Ando had had a header which had flashed across and Didz had put a cross in which Tyrone couldn’t get on the end of because of good defending. Murph had been in and clipped it over the bar.

“It was a good save from Gerks, how he got it over the crossbar I’ll never know and we had to work hard."

He added: “A bit like on Saturday against Millwall, they were capable in possession, they worked us, they tried to stretch us and get us wide open, but we kept our shape, which was really important.

“As I say, the chance came from us giving it away and they caught us on the break. It wasn’t them picking a hole in us or us as a defence being weak.

“That was a real plus point for us, as was Saturday for the first 20 minutes. And then we got better in the second half and I think we deserved the win in the end and the two goals were excellent.”

McCarthy’s squad appears to be one of the tightest-knit at Town for some while and he says he works hard to maintain a stable environment.

“I hope that’s the case, I think you might find that it’s a lot down to the way I run the club and TC is a big part of that,” he said.

“We try to be consistent in our approach to it, the management of it. There are no real slanging matches or abuse going around.

“Win, lose or draw I think there’s a consistent attitude towards what we’re doing and that helps create an environment where players enjoy coming in working and enjoying training, which they do. Quite clearly they do.”

He continued: “I’ve really try to treat people how I would like to be treated and if they don’t like that, then I can’t do a lot about it, can I? I like to be treated well myself.

“We’ve had players that because they’re not in the team are unhappy, I get that, so they want to go and play. But I know there are players who are playing [elsewhere] who would still like to be back here because of the way the place is run and the spirit that’s in the club.”

He says he’s had that same spirit at all his previous clubs: “I’d like to think I’ve always had it. But the more games you get beat, the harder it is to keep it. I haven’t changed, it’s not me that changes, believe me!”

His after match interviews may seem banal and too even handed when we have lost, but this is all part of his culture, and we should all learn to accept that he will never openly slag off his team even after they have played terribly, and will always look for the positives

This is what makes him an excellent, not to say, World Class Man Manager
Subsequently he gets pure commitment from a squad and coaching staff that many on this site describe as paper thin and low on quality as soon as we get one bad result

I think he's great MM!

Fully agree with your comments jabberjackson, very well put.

I would only like to add that I have been critical of how bare the squad is and I am still of that belief. We stillneed additions to create competition thus avoiding complacency plus to cover from any injuries. I recall Mick saying similar.
The quality side is a difficult one. I don't think we have world beaters but Mick and Terry do get the very best out of average players.

That interview wasn't with McCarthy but an imposter. How do I know? He didn't say "bonkers"

We have only won 2 games on the bounce Mick let's not get too carried away, we've won 3 on the bounce the 2 previous seasons (both coincidentally starting around late November) and I can't remember such comments on those occasions. When we start winning on a more regular basis away from home than I will start to believe we are making steps forwards.

'Buzz about the place' compare that to Harry's posting on Wigan at present (their fan's comment on their mid week game is priceless!). Got to be a good time to play them- anything we get there keeps us nicely tucked in behind top 6.
As said above by others, ok our squad is thin and lacking in top, top quality but in recent seasons we've elsewhere how teamwork etc can get you 'overachieving' (e.g. Burnley).

We are certainly benefiting from MM factor but wonder who he's referring to when he says that "players playing elsewhere".
Does that fit with comments from Brum manager!

Timmy H always the negatives with you. Why not give credit where it's due instead of constant whining.

However pleasing the wins against Millwall & Brighton have been I have always thought that the game on Monday is the crucial test. Simply our record against Wigan is terrible & if we are going to make the top 6 we neeed to start beating the boggie teams of the division

Irishtim, so you have noticed it too......negativity, some appear to want Mick to fail at all cost!

........ same every time with some excitable people - win a couple of games, and we are 'world beaters' .

A long way from that in REALITY - but doing ok at present - is a more 'level headed' assessment.

C'mon settle down - @irishtim @warktheline - 2 home wins against respectable opponents (in fact Brighton struggling at the moment) is good but you do need a dose of reality. We keep the clean sheets coming on a fairly regular basis and start to win away then I'll believe you have a case!

p.s. Notice irishtim how you are 1 of a few who is very quick to down mark me if the slightest thing is said against MM but on the flip side when it comes to celebrating and patting the team and coaching staff after a win (i.e. just lately) you'll up mark a lot of other people but strangely not me...

Ah. Didn't realise you could 'click' and find out who'd marked you down. Though it was anonymous. Don't worry TimmyH, the rest of us love you - except (click) Toronto Tractor.

No you don't otherwise you would have (click) me upwards :)...anyway this is a forum for differing views (how boring it would be if we all thought along the same lines), I like to call it critical analysis...but some on here would call you not a true supporter and to go and support another team.

There you are TH. Oh no! Got it wrong. Sorry.
To be serious TH the rest of your comments are bang on the button. Forums invite comment from all sides and, unfortunately, there will always be some, who take the opposite view, who think that those who have an opposing point of view represent the enemy.

Jabberjackson- what planet are you on????!!!! McCarthy is an average championship manager, not even premiership class, let alone world class!! Je*us! We win a couple of games and all this b*llsh*t comes out. McCarthy is an old school hoofer with a limited footballing brain.
