McCarthy: One of Our Best Away Displays
Wednesday, 24th Sep 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy hailed Monday’s 2-1 win at Wigan as one of the best away performances of his time in charge of the Blues. Luke Hyam and Conor Sammon were on target for Town in the live Sky game with Martyn Waghorn pulling one back late on for the Latics.

“I would say so,” McCarthy said afterwards. “Probably the best one was at Birmingham in my first game. That was a win, I’m not sure how we played but it was a well-needed victory.

“[Monday] was a really solid performance. There’ll be a lot of talk about the last 10 minutes when they’ve had a bit, but the reality is that we could have won by more.”

Town's victory at the DW Stadium - their first on their travels this season and their first ever away at Wigan - took their current run to three wins on the trot for the first time since they beat Charlton away and Blackburn and Huddersfield at home in November and December last year.

The Blues, whose starting line-up on Monday cost only the £10,000 paid to Chippenham for Tyrone Mings, last won four in a row in January and February 2012 when West Ham were thrashed 5-1 at Portman Road and then Coventry and Portsmouth were beaten away and Cardiff were vanquished at home.

Town, who are up to seventh in the Championship, will be looking to equal that streak when they face 19th-placed Rotherham United at Portman Road on Saturday, a game which McCarthy warns won’t be easy.

“The hardest game of the lot will be Rotherham at home on Saturday when everybody expects us to win. That’s sod’s law.

"But it’s a nice expectancy, it’s better than everyone expecting us to get beaten.”

On-loan Blues duo Paul Taylor and Anthony Wordsworth are ineligible against their parent club on Saturday.

Meanwhile, winger Stephen Hunt's wife Joanne gave birth to a daughter, Arabella, at Wexford Hospital on Tuesday evening.

Great result great performance people can moan about the last 15mins but bishop had cramp and skuse looked like he picked up a dead leg and had 2 go off that's what changed the game in their favour for me. Ambrose is clearly not fit and Bru was poo lol bring on Rotherham

Don't blame it on sunshine, moonlight nor the good times, blame it on the boogie. I just can't control my feet.

It's interesting that our last line up cost us £10K (Mings) in fees, whereas Rotherham's cost us about £2M (Loach, Taylor, Wordsworth). While Taylor and Wordsworth are ineligible Saturday, possibly seeing Loach, Green and Richardson adds an element of extra interest. I'm looking forward to the match.

Well done Shrewsbury and that's the start of the scum downfall this season. Up the Blues, hopefully 3 games in a row may start to bring in a few added supporters this Saturday. 3-0 to town, Berra, Murphy, Bishop.

Congratulation to the hunt family . And massive congrats to the management who seem to have got rid of the waste that us fans can't see I for one am so happy for MM an TC who within the constraints of keeping this club alive with a lot of help from Marcus have produced a football team who nobody are going to be happy to play against, but we all should know how things can go wrong with injuries so fingers crossed for them wish I was there Saturday COYB

A total of £10k on not just the starting line up but including the 3 subs too (Bru, Ambrose & Smith). Thats a fantastic acheivement to put together a decent team in such a hard league with nothing to spend. Well done Mick.

Keep up Mick, and move on! You're not doing well enough at present, 7th not good enough, please tap into the instant success posse, you may learn more from your elders! I would suggest your first port of call.....ITFCReList and guentchev . "We should be thrashing the likes of Millwall, Brighton and Wigan...not just scrapping through with a bucket load of luck".
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE BOYS!

Brian - Interesting point. I would reckon Berra, Chambers, Bishop and Hyam could all command a 7-figure fee theoretically as well? Maybe Murphs even?

£50 to watch a £10k team. You're having a laugh, Marcus?

Blue_steele - sorry but that is an idiotic comment! It doesn't matter how much the team cost as long as it is producing the results!

Foreverdon Blue-I do not think that blue steele's comment is sensible enough to call it idiotic.

Due to freedom of contract players can now move for free if they are not offered improved terms. Transfer fees have in time become generally only for the elite. The big expense has been wages and signing on fees which have spiralled out of control. Hopefully with the number of players out of contract increasing year on year and clubs realising that high wages cannot be sustained, we might get some reality back into the game?

........ would have agreed totally at 73 minutes - after that we totally lost the plot - and just, and only just, managed to hang on by our fingertips.

As has been said many times - a game is of the duration of 90+ minutes.

Now lets see if anyone disagrees with that - if they do, they really do live in 'cloud cuckoo land'.
