Williams to Wear 50
Monday, 29th Sep 2014 15:06

Returning loanee Jonny Williams has opted to wear the number 50 shirt during his second spell with the Blues. The 20-year-old joined the Blues on a 93-day loan earlier today.

The new number is the 25 he wore during his previous spell doubled, with young striker Darren McQueen currently in possession of his old number.

No Town player has previously worn a squad number as high as 50 with Darren O’Dea’s 48 the highest up to now.

"Quite an expensive name to get on your shirt plus double figure number too ;)"... especially if he DOES get recalled after 28 days... (hopefully that won't be the case of course!)

Why the hell would you get the name of a loan player on the back of your shirt! Surely the clue is in the fact that he's a loan player!

Is it sequential so he is next in line after our other 49 midfielders?

Welcome back Jonny. The players we potentially have at our disposal right now for barely any outlay is incredible

50 could be the total number of loan appearances (if we can extend in Jan TW) that he makes for ITFC in The Championship.........before signing permanently when we reach the PL

Players are strange creatures, i'd hate to wear a number like 50, its just not a football shirt number for me.

Hoppy, if he gets recalled that quickly the shirt will quickly become a collectors item. Best get a few as an investment I reckon.

@TheBeat, I think it pretty cool. It's original & a little bit special for a special player. Remember Beckham went from 7 to 23 & everyone thought that was odd, until he explained the MJ story.

@JWM: Why not? If Ronaldo signed on loan, people would buy his shirt, however long it was for. Maybe it's a little piece of history, if he goes into great things...

I am one off the people wanting mick out after the scum loss but now after a month everything is looking great for the town the only way is up and we are only three points behind the scum now.

Shirt numbers used to denote the positions in which footballers played. It was supposed to simplify things for spectators. Hence goalies were always no. 1, RBs no. 2, CFs no. 9 etc. Squad systems changed matters somewhat and current convention suggests that a player not only has his own squad number but also that he gets to choose it. Now, in the current era anything goes. What next? A player wanting his birthdate on his back, his age, or even his telephone number. Now here's a thought; what if we revert to the old system where shirt numbers are numbered 1 to 18. No names required. Let the supporters favour their favourite players by placing their names on their replica shirts with their own choice of numbers if they want, but remember that most of us who actually go to the games can't read the names on the shirts anyway so any practical purpose is redundant.

@Blue041273 my guess is that there's more revenue for every club in having names and numbers. Whatever about the likes of Man Ure or Chelsea making a fortune off their big name stars, it's essential to us as part of our revenue within the already smothering FFP rules. Without the little bit the club does earn from such initiatives, we would earn probably very little at all without it.
