Mings: Boss Was a Man of His Word
Tuesday, 7th Oct 2014 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy is a man of his word — as young defender Tyrone Mings discovered when Aaron Cresswell was transferred to West Ham prior to the start of the current campaign.

Mings said: “The manager always said to me that I would get my chance if Cressy went because I was patient.

“When Cressy did go it changed a lot of things. All of a sudden I had different pressure of trying to keep the shirt than trying to get into the team.

“I think the manager has been brilliant with me. Everything has happened at good times — Cressy left at a good time in my development and at the moment I’m really enjoying playing in the team, although I am the first to admit there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“At the beginning of the season I was a little bit slow but since then I think I’ve really kicked on.

“The manager has shown good confidence in me over what happened in the transfer window when the club turned down a bid from Crystal Palace and I think it is showing in my performances.”

McCarthy made the point after a handful of games that he felt Mings was not fully extending himself and the player added: “I probably agree with him. In terms of my performances I think I have done a lot better when I’ve gone forward and shown no fear, rather than trying not to make mistakes.

“I’m taking the game to the opposition and having a bit more of an imposing effect in games. I’ve not done anything differently in terms of my play. I’ve just loosened up a bit I think. I love getting forward and being involved in the play as we attack but obviously it has to be at the right time.

“In some recent games — and certainly at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday — there wasn’t really much opportunity to do that because they were trying to sort of, not catch us on the break, but to stop our full-backs from going forward.

“In different games and different scenarios there are always going to be times when I can and can’t go forward, so I think the key is knowing when I can and when I can’t.”

Is Mings already a "better" player for us than Cresswell was? Mings will continue to get better, but for me there already is very little in it.

SouperJim, Mings will certainly become a really good player for us, but in my opinion is not remotely close to cresswell just yet. Mings has great potential and is certainly playing well at the moment, but to compare him to cressy is a bit premature in my eyes. Cressy was voted the championships best left back and was top of the assists chart, scored goals and could defend. Mings still has a lot to learn, but he is under the right people to do this, if he keeps his head down. Played really well against forest but was guilty of following the ball at times and getting dragged out of position. An improving player, with great potential, as good as cresswell, not for me at the moment

Reading the Forest board after the drawer, some of them were raving about Mings, calling him a "brilliant left-back".

Mings looks like an deception all signing. But needs time in the team to develop. This will mean making mistakes, which as long as he learns from them, the fans will have to accept. There will be bad days, but plenty of good ones!

The big difference between Mings and Cressy is that Mings has kicked on since the Prem interest. Cressy had a real dip in form last year and appeared distracted when the prem sharks came sniffing.

Mings outstanding, end of. His cross for the second goal on Sunday was spot on and reckon he must have been working on that side of hs game----Smurf must love him!

Only caveat is that when he bombs forward someone must cover him----basics really.

when i first saw him play i said he had the ability to be a better player than Cresswell, i still stand by that. To begin with he was very raw, exciting yet quite scarey when he had the ball as you never quite knew what he would do next! Having a run in the first team has helped him mature as a player and those tackles that used to make you cringe as he sometimes didnt quite time them well, have suddenly become spot on tackles that even the best left backs would be proud of. Cresswell is a very very good solid left back and will do well wherever he is at, Mings however is far more exciting and i do believe will be the better player in the long run. 10k, what a fantastic bargain. However much of the credit has to go to the management team who have turned this lad from a prospect to a player. just look at what they have done with Murphy too, last season and this have to be the best of his career!

I have to say Mings has surpassed all my expectations already and has come a long long way since I first saw him play for the first team at Blackpool where he was all over the place. He was too casual and appeared to have no urgency or positional sense but my goodness and full credit to the lad he has excelled this season. It is early days for me to say he is better than Cresswell but I firmly believe he could and in my opinion, will be in the long term.

Great player to compliment a great defence. We just need better midfielders now. Williams was a different class on Saturday- all Forest could do was hack him down
