McCarthy and Mings Nominated
Thursday, 9th Oct 2014 09:07

Town boss Mick McCarthy has been nominated for the September Manager of the Month award, while left-back Tyrone Mings is on the shortlist for the Player of the Month gong.

Neither nomination comes as much of a surprise with the Blues having taken 13 points from 15 during September and Mings having been an outstanding performer throughout that run.

McCarthy is up against Charlton’s Bob Peeters, Steve McClaren of Derby and Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, while Blackburn’s Ben Marshall, Blackpool keeper Joe Lewis and Norwich frontman Cameron Jerome are Mings’s rivals. The winners of both awards will be announced on Friday morning.

If McCarthy wins he'll become the first Town boss to carry off the Manager of the Month award since Joe Royle in November 2004.

The current Town boss, who while with Sunderland was coincidentally amongst the nominees to lose out to Royle, has picked up the award three times with his previous clubs, once with Wearsiders and twice with Wolves, most recently in November 2008.

David McGoldrick was the last Town man to win the Player of the Month award, in October 2013.

Think Murphy can consider himself unlucky not to be in the frame for the player award.

I hope Blackburn's manager gets it. I don't know who he is. I don't really care.
It'll just mean that the curse of 'manager of the month' will fall on him & Town will win their next game!!

COYB!!

Definitely agree, as well as Mings has played and we have played as a team if there was a particular stand out player from multiple good performances it would probably be Murphy IMO

@ArnieMsBigToe - Blackburn's manager hasn't even been shortlisted...so I doubt he'll win it.

Mick is surely nailed on to win the award. September was an excellent month for us.

Mick should be the only contender for it after the month we've had. I agree that Murphy should feel a bit unlucky as he's been in great form. It's nice to see Tyrone Mings being noticed as he's been outstanding! It's been no surprise that Mick was more than happy to let Cresswell go while we had him to come straight in!

MM deserves it , did any other contender get 13 from 15 >?

Murphy is probably an early frontrunner for the October award after his performance at Forest.

I am sure mm will be first to say that you get nothing for being voted manager of the month in september. Let's worry about awards at the end of the season

Incidentally, Big Mick was up for the award in Nov 2004 when Big Joe won it

If its just down to league results then MM is in pole position but both Derby and Boro had good cup results that may sway. I'm not sure Mings is though!

The Charlton manager might get it just for beating Norwich

Ten years since we had a Manager of the Month! Maybe we really are on the up now - or is it just my innate optimism?
For Mings to get a nomination after less than 2 doz games (and remember, it's not as if he'd gained experience in the lower leagues first) is a huge achievement - and shows just how much potential he has as he gains experience.

Give it Macwallybrolly and Jerome and hope the curse strikes them both.

If anyone is in Waterstone's, Sainsbury's etc please take the time to put another book on top of Keane's autobiography. It's 5 minutes well spent!

Both have done fantastically. As have the whole Ipswich team. Great effort. COYB.

There is no such thing as the "curse". Statistically, nearly two-thirds of teams win at least one of their next two games after picking up Manager of the Month and a quarter win both (figures from 2004-10, see blog below). I'm very happy to see us doing so well that our Manager is up for such an award, not to mention having a player in the draw for that gong as well.

Blog: [Blog] The Manager of the Month Curse - Myth or Reality? 4th Sep 2010 22:05
Following Roy Keane's nomination for August 2010's Championship Manager of the Month and some posters' alarmed reaction: "The curse! The curse! We're doomed if he wins! Give it to someone else!!!", I decided to see whether winning the accolade did have an adverse effect on the team's performance in the next couple of games. 8
