Hewitt: Loan Will Boost My Fitness
Thursday, 9th Oct 2014 09:25

On-loan right-back Elliott Hewitt hopes his month with Colchester United will improve his fitness and increase his chances of getting back in the Town side. The 20-year-old Welshman joined the U’s until November 2nd earlier in the week and made his debut in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie with Gillingham on Tuesday, which the Essex side lost on penalties.

“I just want to get a run of games while I’m at Colchester, which will help to get my fitness up,” Hewitt told the Colchester Gazette.

“The gaffer at Ipswich told me that it was a good time for me to go out on loan.

“I’m here for a month and it’s a good time for me to do it, with the international break.

“I started the season for Ipswich out of position on the right-wing and felt that I did alright there.

“I then went out of the side and they went on an unbeaten run, so I can’t really complain about not starting because all of the boys are playing well.

“It’s a lot better to play in the league than to play in U21 games. Hopefully, I can keep my place in the Colchester team and we can get some good results while I’m here.

“I think we can move up the table, if we play like we did against Gillingham.”

Colchester manager Tony Humes was impressed with Wales U21 international Hewitt’s U’s debut: “It was Elliott’s first game with us and he played ever so well.

“We’re delighted with the way that he has fitted in with the squad. It’s good for him to get some senior football and everybody can see why we brought him in.”

He has a chance to be a top right back , however it seems his chances with us will continue to be so limited. Shame really.

I hope the fact that it is a months loan only means that he still has a future with us, unlike it appears wordsworth, taylor etc.

Mings is likely to pick up a suspension for cumulative bookings fairly soon, at which point Parr will go to left-back and either Hewitt or Chambers will play at right back (with Smith covering in the middle if the latter).

However, if Hewitt gets this chance he will have to play a blinder to keep either Parr or Mings out of the team.

In a way, I feel sorry for Elliot because I think he's a good prospect and I don't want us to lose him permanently. But on the other hand, I am hardy going to complain that Parr and the midfield (I also see Elliot as a right-sided midfielder) are playing so well that he can't get into the team at the moment.

Personally if/when Mings is suspended I would play Tommy Smith left back - you are then only changing one rather than three of a back four.

I would have liked EH to have made the RB position his own. I think once suspensions come it will be Tommy that will get the nod to come in.

I think it's just great to have cover of his caliber. Should he be in the team? Ahead of Parr, of course not, but in case of injuries/suspensions/loss of form of others, would have no worries about bringing him in.
