McCarthy Cool With Smith's All Whites Return
Saturday, 18th Oct 2014 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he has no problem with Tommy Smith returning to international football with New Zealand only two months after deciding to take a year out of All Whites action.

The 24-year-old defender, who has been capped 27 times, scoring two goals, had opted to miss a year’s international football to concentrate on Town’s promotion push.

But, having dropped out of the Town side in recent weeks, he is back in the fold and was named in the squad for November friendlies away against China and Thailand earlier this week.

“I spoke to him about it and I spoke to his new coach, Anthony Hudson, by text and I’m cool with that,” McCarthy said.

“I think if Tommy got back in the team and was playing Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday then he might review that decision. But if he’s not playing some competitive football will be good for him.”
