Murphy: The Best I've Ever Scored Friday, 24th Oct 2014 06:00 Daryl Murphy has hailed his goal at Cardiff in midweek as the best of his entire playing career. The Republic of Ireland international drilled in a long-distance drive with his left foot to give Town the lead and take his tally for the season so far to an impressive seven. Murphy, 31, said: “It’s up there and probably my best I’d say. I’ve had a few decent ones this season but I just think the way I caught it and the way it went in, plus the distance, makes it the best. “When I turned the defence kind of backed off me and the ball sat up nicely, so I just thought to myself ‘Why not?’. "I think it’s because of the form I have been in and that I have that extra bit of confidence that I took it on, whereas if you’re lacking confidence I don’t think you are going to shoot from that far out. But thankfully it went in. “Seven goals is good but I need to keep doing it. There’s no point having those goals and then going out and not doing it again for a while. I need to be consistent and hopefully that will be the case. “I’m probably in the best form of my career right now. I think I’ve played well in the past but I don’t think I’ve been as prolific as I have been in the last few games. I need to keep working hard and make sure I maintain that form.” Murphy admitted it is no coincidence that with his confidence at an all-time high he is performing better than ever and was quick to acknowledge the part that Town assistant manager Terry Connor, a former striker, has played in his progress. He added: “Every now and again you get a little break, where things go for you, and it’s been happening for me. Obviously, you take a lot of belief and confidence from that. We work hard enough during the week in training and we do shooting every Friday with TC. “That’s a big help and gives you more belief in yourself because if you’re doing it right on a Friday you take it into the Saturday and thankfully that’s been happening for me. “Terry is brilliant, all his sessions are really enjoyable and he needs to take a lot of credit for what he does with the strikers and the rest of the lads. “We do it every Friday but it’s never the same. It’s always mixed and he has different ideas with game situations. When you see the lads scoring Terry is the first one to be up celebrating because of the work we have all put in the day before.” Murphy also has praise for fellow Irish striker Conor Sammon, who is on a season-long loan from current Championship leaders Derby County. He added: “Conor’s brilliant and a great lad to have around. He gives us that physical threat as well and since we’ve been going with three up front he has slotted in there perfectly. I think that system suits us because the gaffer doesn’t mind us changing. “We can chop and change whenever we want and end up in different positions — left, right or middle — and as long as one of us is in those positions the gaffer’s happy. I think it has worked well for us.”
