Town Trio Unused Subs
Friday, 14th Nov 2014 22:07

Town trio Christophe Berra, Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick were all unused subs as Scotland beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier at Celtic Park.

Wigan’s Shaun Maloney netted the only goal of the game on 74 as Berra’s Scotland claimed the three points and climbed into third place in Group D ahead of Murphy and McGoldrick’s Ireland with both sides now on seven points. Poland lead on 10 with Germany second, also on seven.

Berra will hope to win his 29th cap when Scotland take on England in a friendly at Celtic Park on Tuesday, while Murphy will be after his 14th and McGoldrick his first when Ireland face the USA, also in a friendly, at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on the same night.

Meanwhile, Elliott Hewitt was in the Colchester side which lost 3-2 at Barnsley in League One this evening, having returned to the U’s for a second month on loan yesterday.

Elsewhere, 17-year-old midfielder Adam McDonnell will be looking to win his first Republic of Ireland U19 cap when they play Gibraltar in the second game of their European Championships qualification mini-group in Wexford on Saturday evening.

McDonnell, who joined Town from Shelbourne in August, was an unused sub as the Irish youngsters beat Malta 1-0 in their opening game on Thursday.

Don't get too excited about the lack of injuries, RoI play USA and Scotland play England next week. All three may play yet.

Didz and Murphy will struggle to get a look in because they play for a club who wear blue !!

How berra can't get in ahead of Hanley or Martin is beyond.

Divided in my opinion here. While for the players' sakes, I'd like them to play, from our point of view, I'm happy if they don't, thereby avoiding any potential injury problems. We mustn't get too carried away just yet with our promotion challenge. If a key player or two gets injured (one already has) then the wheels might, if not come off, then begin to turn more slowly. If we're where we are now in April, I'll be more than happy. COYB!

I'm an Irish fan, so I'd like them both to play against USA. If I were Scottish I'd like Berra to play against England. If I were English - I don't want anyone to play - unless that is, a couple of our guys get selected for England, in which case some of you might have a different opinion.

Dids and Murph were there. And they were sat next to each other on the bench. Best of buds!
