McCarthy Pleased For Unlucky Ando
Monday, 24th Nov 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted to see Paul Anderson make the most of his return to the side at Bournemouth on Saturday, the winger claiming an assist with the 76th minute freekick from which Daryl Murphy secured Town’s 2-2 draw.

Having been a regular during the early part of the season, Anderson has been a victim of the Blues’ switch to a 4-3-3 system and Saturday was his first start since the 2-0 victory over Rotherham on September 27th, the 26-year-old returning to the side to replace Stephen Hunt, who missed out with a hamstring problem.

The assist at Dean Court was Anderson’s fourth in his seven starts and seven sub appearances during 2014/15, the joint-highest by a Town player this season along with Teddy Bishop, which puts them joint-ninth in the overall Championship assists table. Anderson’s three previous assists all led to Christophe Berra goals.

“He was unlucky when I left him out, but I’ve explained all those reasons,” McCarthy said after the game.

“Being unlucky when you’re left out is one thing, it’s doing it when you get back in is the other and he’s done it again today, so I’m pleased for him.”

Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie, who scored for the Cherries against Town at the weekend, currently tops the assists table with eight.

Town striker Murphy’s goal at Dean Court was his 11th of the season, which sees him remain the Championship’s joint-top scorer alongside Nottingham Forest’s Britt Assombalonga.

While McCarthy has said that he doesn’t read too much into league tables at this point in a season, he’s pleased to see the Blues in the top four.

“Of course I’m not ignoring it,” he added. “When I have a look at the paper I’d prefer to see us in fourth than 12th.

“And the lads get a bit of bonus when they’re in the top six, they don’t get it anywhere else, they’ve got to be in a promotion place, so it’s nice for them. Makes it worthwhile coming and getting the point.”

Meanwhile, Bishop’s goal was only the third by a Town midfield player this season, Luke Hyam having netted at Wigan and Jonny Williams at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 18-year-old was delighted with his first senior goal, telling the club site: “It was a special day for me because I scored my first goal, although it seemed to take an age to go in.

“I was waiting for the ball to hit the back of the net and as soon as I saw it had crossed the line, I was buzzing really. It’s a great feeling to score and I have to give credit to Mingsy for his work in the build-up.

“I wasn’t too sure what to do when the ball went in so I just stood around and gave it a little fist-pump! It was a great feeling and hopefully I can score again soon.”

Very pleased for Ando, you can see how hard he works at his game, have always rated him, can be frustrating at times but certainly has the quality to deliver assists and goals and probably puts the best ball in out of anyone in our squad. Hope he keeps his place for Saturday.
In fact I'd like to see him play in the JW role which bru took up on Saturday as he did against Rotherham and was very effective! With him, bishop and Hyam that would be my midfield 3 for Saturday with Hunty coming back in on the right for his current form and enthusiasm.
Skuse seriously has to up his game, not been at it all season, yes be tracks runners and works hard but has been nowhere near hyams standard this season, has to pull his finger out

GerkensBeard - Hyam was awful on Saturday while Skuse was his normal calm effective self. You described what he is there to do. It isn't to run around and harass people and make unnecessary fouls.

He holds position and protects the back four and is essential in a 433 for us. He has been one of our better midfielders before his injury and lets Bru and Bishop do what they need to do without the worry of what is going on behind quie as much

Ando had to work his socks off - with the awful Hyam/Skuse central midfield combo (one or the other but not together) left huge gaps which he initially had trouble trying to cover (made worse by Chambers at right back too). Bournemouth's first goal started from this poor set-up and until Skuse was told to cover over the right more Ando looked very isolated.

Boro & Bournemouth have won more matches than we have - but they have also lost more. Interesting! If it comes to a dogfight at the end of the season, I reckon we're up for it.

Never rated Anderson, to be honest. I have no complaints on his efforts it's just his technique and ball control and all that... He sometimes looks like he's trying to play footy with a rugby ball. A diligent player but not a promotion quality IMHO.

Got to agree that I've never really rated Anderson much, yes he does work hard for the team and he tracks runners but is that what you want from a winger? Can't understand the praise he was getting for murphys equaliser, yes he put the ball in the box but murph had a lot to do, for me it was a very very good header. However, he does sometimes put good balls in the box and that is all he has to do, which frustrates me the most because he never beats his man and gets a ball in the box or creates himself half a yard to get the ball in the box, that's all we need from him, get the ball in the box and cause danger but he seems to do this very rarely

I quite like Anderson, he is like Lee Martin without the arrogance or astronomical wages!
He works hard and is better technically that he often shows. Apparently is quite a nice chap as well.
However his problem is he is a bit of a jack of all trades on the wing. He does not have blistering pace, he isn't a 10-goal-a-season winger and he hasn't got especially impresiive crossing ability.

If I could have any championship player at moment will be Matt Ritchie, the guy is pure class that is really what we miss someone with his pace, direct running and end product

Hyam really wasn't at the races on Saturday. At least four sliding tackles failed to win the ball, very little came off for him. But he just needs a run of games again and will be back to his best. Ando was absolutely on his knees at the end of the 12 minutes added on. He worked so hard for the team and put in that excellent cross for Murphs goal.
