Keeping Each Other On Their Toes
Tuesday, 25th Nov 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says keeper Dean Gerken magnanimously accepted his decision to stick with Bartosz Bialkowski for the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday. Gerken, 29, had been McCarthy’s number one for more than a year before suffering a groin problem in the warm-up at Blackpool at the start of the month.

As a result, Bialkowski, 27, a summer signing from Notts County, was handed a surprise debut in the 2-0 win at Bloomfield Road, then continued as Gerken was sidelined for the home games against Wolves and Watford, 2-1 and 1-0 victories respectively.

“I’ve got two goalkeepers, I could flick a coin between the pair of them,” McCarthy admitted.

“Gerks was unbelievably generous in the fact that he said, ‘You don’t have to say it to me, I know and he deserves to play and I’d be exactly the same if I’d have got in and you’d left me out, I’d have been [disappointed]’.

“And he got in and to be fair Gerks was very magnanimous I thought, the fact that he knew he deserved to stay in. And he did.

“We’ve got two really good goalkeepers keeping each other on their toes now.”

Pole Bialkowski, who previously had a loan spell with the Blues in 2009 but without making a senior appearance, impressed again at Dean Court, most notably making a brilliant double save in the first half, and is likely to keep his place for Saturday’s live Sky game at Charlton.

Gerken may have his critics but I have seen him make some tremendous saves this season and certainly won us some points that he may have cost us elsewhere. Great to have two keepers fighting it out, can only be good for the club.

I think we should play both of them at the same time!!
One on the left and one on the right.
Penalties would be interesting.

Like BlueMachines has said, can only be a good thing to have 2 keeps fighting for 1 spot. I would stick with Bart for now, not sure he has done anything wrong since coming in and deserves his chance to carry on. Gerks can come back if or when Bart makes a few mistakes. Nice problem to have. We seem to have competition in most positions now, so all is looking good for the rest of the season.

stronger this season in gk position

Noticed that Scott Loach soon dropped by Rotherham after a couple of games, and saw him make another blunder playing for Bury at the weekend where he has presumably gone on loan.

Seasider, given the flack MM took for not playing loach said blunder is all the more telling, not that I've seen it. From what I've seen Bart has done well although i thought he could have come off his line quicker for Bournemouths second goal, he might have snuffed it out but I'm certainly not going to call it a mistake.

Gerks reaction is testiment to him being one of the good guys. Have to see the biggest change at PR since Mick arrived is that the dressing room seems to have good charcters in it where as under Keane and Jewel there were rather more ego's.

Right now it feels like everyone in the squad hurts at every dropped point, every goal conceded and I think thats bourne out by the fact that when we go behind we now work, scrap and fight to turn the tide.

anyway my point was Gerks seems like a Top bloke.

Does anyone know the super ted theme tune btw?

Thanks Bri, that might take some working on! Sang alongside bodger and badger PR could turn into a throw back to my youth!

If only one of the players looked like Penfold or Count Ducula....

According to Sky Darren Bents off to Brighton on loan, due to sign in the next 48 hrs. Interesting

Well if that's true then Darren Ambrose's biggest contribution could be whilst he's off the field! Have a word! And after only 10k spent on players I think MM reward should be Ipswich paying the percentage of Darren Bent's wages for the rest if the season. Could you imagine it people!!!!

Darren Bent was a quality player for us. He was also immense at Charlton and then got in to the England team and had ok spells at Spurs and Sunderland.

But he's done nothing for 2 seasons now and he's probably on about £60k a week. I can't see us being able to afford him and when you've got Murphy and Didzy I don't think we need him.

He's not MM's type of player either. He doesn't like strikers that just hang around up front waiting for things to happen. He wants them to get stuck in and that's not how Bent plays.

I'd rather Mick tries to find a replacement for Johnny Williams than bring in a centre forward.

We could play three up top. Benty, Murphy with Didzy in the hole!

He would be reinvigorated for us. If Marcus Evans was ever to gamble on going up now is the time. Get Ambrose on the blower to Benty and get him to Portman Road.

Didzy in the hole is the key.
