Chelsea Youngster Training With Town
Wednesday, 26th Nov 2014 12:04

Chelsea youngster John Swift has spent the last couple of days training with Town with a view to potentially signing before Thursday’s 5pm emergency loan deadline.

The 19-year-old midfielder has come through the ranks at Chelsea and has won England caps at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels.

Born in Portsmouth, Swift has made one sub appearance for Chelsea and spent time on loan at Rotherham earlier this season, making two starts and two sub appearances.

It’s understood a deal for Swift to join the Blues is not yet done with Football League clubs able to sign players on loan for up to 93 days until 5pm tomorrow.

Manager Mick McCarthy has said that while he wasn’t expecting to make many additions before the deadline, he could bring someone in to replace the injured Jonny Williams.

There is less of a rush regarding trialist Sean St Ledger, who as a free agent could be added to the squad at any point if he impresses during his trial. A short-term deal through to January seems likely.

He was supposed to be on loan at Rotherham for the year, but the deal was cut short as he couldn't make the first team. Not exactly encouraging!

Trust Mick, best way.

Keen to see how Monty Patterson and Benyu develop though, sound promising.

Hope this is not a Chelsea sweetener if the reports are right about them watching Mings!!!

I can't see how this guy has enough experience to make a positive impact for us. A parent club will want their players to get game time, but how to tell whether he's good enough?

Jose: "Mick, we'll give you £10 million for Mings in Jan"
Mick: "That's fine, but what do I do about a left back?"
Jose: "We've this young lad called John, we'll send him down, you can have him as part of the deal'
Mick: "Ok, we'll take a look'

Good potential may not offer enough for what we need in championship ? Would rather have signed Benty as another forward option as we will struggle up top if Dids or Murphy get injured

Highly rated by Chelsea. Very skilful midfield player which is what we need now Williams has gone. This is the sort of thing he likes to do:

Looks good against an already beaten team.

I though MM said he wanted a player who played with his back to goal. Swift looks like he comes from deep.

I'd rather we signed Darrren Bent like Brighton are about to.

@Ipswich Loyal, and which Murphy or McGoldrick would you drop to accommodate him?

Hmmm...so long as we stay injury free I don't see the point in adding anymore loanees who are just going to sit on the bench.

We've given deals to Collison,Ambrose,Stewart & Henshall over the last few months and none of them have made any sort of dent in the first team.

We should concentrate on what we've got, particularly our own kids ala Teddy Bishop.

@Paulc - I'd drop neither, and play him in a front 3 with them both. Not many Championship defences would fancy playing against that.

PaulC are you saying Murphy and Dids are going to have no bad games or any injuries , well that's fine then . If they do get injured and we cannot get any loans in we are left with Salmon and Bajiner , Bent would have been a great signing

I would also like Benty, but looks like we will end up with another Hunt from Leeds who I have not heard of.Hope he is better than Sammon.
Spose will have to leave it to Mick who after all is the Manager, and he hasn't done a bad job up to now.

I agree with lightning boy, I would just add why sign others' youngsters unless they are significantly better than what we have already?

I'm assuming he's better than what we have so yes please as we need to plug gap left by JW. Obviously Hunt is here for Christmas party!

Hunt still has a lot to prove... so hope he does the business... Swift needs a haircut, to avoid gender doubt ;-)

The kid has pace. We all know how much defenders hate that. Bring him on with 20 minutes to go? He could be an impact sub.
