Ex-Blue Wickham Signs New Sunderland Deal
Tuesday, 9th Dec 2014 17:31

Former Blue Connor Wickham has signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Sunderland. The 21-year-old was in the final season of the contract he penned after his move from Town for an initial £8.1 million in the summer of 2011.

Wickham extending his stay on Wearside is good news for the Blues with the deal which took him to the Black Cats including various top-up clauses potentially taking the fee to £12 million plus an undisclosed percentage of the profit if and when he is sold.

If the academy product had moved on without signing the new terms the Blues would have been unlikely to benefit from the sell-on and the other clauses. The striker’s new terms will reportedly see him paid £60,000 a week.

Always rated WIckham and I hope he has a great career, but that kind of money is bonkers. It just goes to show what's become of football...

Congratulations Connor, still strongly believe he has a good future, although 60k a week seems a bit steep

£60k a week for a striker no where near the national team.....mad.

Crikey! It seems so long ago since he wore a blue shirt for us that I find it hard to believe he is still only 21.

60K a week!!! This only goes to show how great the gulf is between the teams hovering in the bottom third of the Premier League and those at the top of the Championship. No wonder Burnley and Leicester are struggling!

If we did get promoted and I sincerely pray that we do, will we stand a snowballs chance in hell of staying there?

what were the top up clauses and do they expire after a certain period of time ?

This is good news for us or Marcus.....but 60,000?

I remember when Johnny Haynes made the headlines at 100 per week when others had been capped at 20 (less in the summer). Many of the Ipswich players had to get summer jobs to top up their wages!

When my uncle played for Town in the 1950s they were paid 15 quid a week

I suggest that £60k per week pales into insignificance compared to what a lot of PL players are currently being paid.

No chance of him coming back here then.

60k per week for any player anywhere is outrageous...

So he'll earn around £13.5m over those four and a half years.

Seems reasonable...

Anyone know what the add ons are? Goals? Games? Be interesting to see if we get any extra as it's about 4 million potentially in add ons from what we were initially paid.

I've watched him a few times lately, being in the area. Playing wife in a midfield 5 isn't really his best position, but he shot himself in the foot with those goals from wide against city and Chelsea last season. His best position is as a central forward, but fletcher is top dog and for some reason Altidore still gets ahead of Connor in there!

Good luck to him. I really think he is starting to mature into the player we all thought he would be.

Good news for us though I would've gone elsewhere if I was Wickham..then again you can't turn your nose up at silly money.
