Hewitt to Extend Colchester Loan
Thursday, 18th Dec 2014 09:24

Blues full-back Elliott Hewitt is set to remain on loan at Colchester United for a third month.

The 20-year-old first joined the U’s in October and after briefly returning to Portman Road as cover while Jonny Parr was suffering with a groin problem, returned to the Weston Homes Community Stadium a month ago.

The Wales U21 international, whose Town contract is up next summer, has now made 10 starts for the League One side but was subbed at half-time during Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat to Rochdale.

“We’ve been pleased with Elliott,” U’s manager Tony Humes told the Colchester Gazette.

“He still has a lot of learning to do but he’s improving the defensive side of his game week by week.

“On Saturday, it was a case of making a change and it wasn’t detrimental to him - it was just something we needed to do.

“Playing Elliott a little bit more advanced is something that we’ve looked at. He’s a very attack-minded player and it’s something that we would consider.”

An extended oan if for the best. He's well behind Chambo & Jonny Parr for the right back spot. His ability to defend at Championship level still has a question mark over it and Tony Humes is even hinting that it is the case at Divison 1 level also. Wing back, outside 3 centre back would be a better fit for him and maybe right side of midfield is where he will end up.

I also very much hope that Elliott has a future at ITFC as I like what I have seen of him.
To secure that future he has to impress MM either with performances at Colchester or here when he eventually returns and thereby get the offer of a new contract.

We now have other defensive options, so this would seem like a sensible idea. However, I think Hewitt has potential so hope he gets a new contract.

Yeah he's slightly unlucky in the fact that we've got Parr and Chambers doing a decent job at right back..we'd be stupid to let him go though as he obviously has the talent to do well here.

@ Lightniningboy.
I like him too and hope he makes it, but he's not unlucky really. He is 20, has been with us for 2 years and is still behind a centre half & left back in the running for his favoured position. Some fans are still posting about the need for us to bring in a true right full back, as it is an area when we can be punished by a good left winger, despite the great cover we have gotten out of Chambo & Parr.
Sometimes we can let our hearts rule our head and wish for someone to be something they are not, maybe because they have been with us since the Youths or we paid biggish money for them (in the past). Luckily for us, Mick doesn't seem to suffer from such sentiment.
