Ando Out to Get Off the Mark
Friday, 19th Dec 2014 11:06

He always gives his all in terms of effort and commitment but Paul Anderson is keen to contribute even more to Town’s promotion challenge in the vital months ahead.

In his first season following his move from Bristol City, which saw Jay Emmanuel-Thomas make the trip in the opposite direction, the one-time Liverpool youngster contributed five goals.

But he has yet to break his duck in the current campaign and admitted: “I’m definitely disappointed not to have got off the mark this season and it’s been a little bit frustrating for me.

"I want to score goals and whatever else but I think my assists are up there — five or six — and I’m happy with that considering I have only started 10 games.

“Of course I would have loved to have scored by now but if I remember rightly, when I had my first interview here, I was asked about goals and I said I’d be happy not to score all season if it meant I was going up with Ipswich. That still applies and if that turns out to be the case I’ll be happy.”

While Anderson took the view that a point at Bolton last week was a satisfactory outcome he confessed: “I was a little bit disappointed with the game on a personal note. I didn’t feel as if my set pieces were quite right. But I’m doing alright, I’m doing my bit for the team and I’m working hard.

“The gaffer seems to be keeping his faith in me so I must be doing something right. I’m happy with how I’m doing but again it’s about the whole team.

“Everyone is putting in a great performance and anyone who has had to come in, whether off the bench or from the start, has been magnificent for the team.

“I work on my delivery now and again. Now that we’re getting into the Christmas period and the pitches are getting boggier I try to rest my legs as much as possible. But I’ll take six balls from time to time and work on wide freekicks and corners.

“I know it’s a key part of my game and being asked to be on the set pieces is nice for me. It gives me an additional chance to get extra assists so I want to put in good deliveries both for the team and from a personal point of view.

“I’ve never really put myself forward for direct freekicks and I don’t think I’ve ever scored that type of goal.

“I’ve always been out on the wings but we’ve got players like McGoldrick and Stephen Hunt — he fancies himself a little bit — so they practice them more often and are the key players to be doing that bit of the game. If given the chance, though, I’d have a good go.”

Probably the one thing that's slightly holding us back from really nailing a promotion place is the fact that our midfield don't get many goals between them (3 all season so far).

When Murphy & McGoldrick (and the defence) aren't scoring we need others to step up to the mark as proved last Saturday.

I work on my deliveries now and again?

Does that sound frequent enough to you?
