McCarthy: Leadbitter Could Play in Top Flight
Saturday, 20th Dec 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy believes former Town skipper Grant Leadbitter is capable of playing in the Premier League. The 28-year-old, who played for McCarthy early in his career at Sunderland, is back at Portman Road with Middlesbrough this afternoon.

The Town boss says Leadbitter, now the captain at the Riverside, is having an excellent season with the Teessiders: “He’s got double figures, hasn’t he? Ten and six of them penalties.

"He’s got a terrific shot on him, people will know him from being here anyway.

“Maybe he didn’t have the same success as he’s enjoying back in the North-East, which is his home. I had him as a kid at Sunderland, he always had ability and he’s thriving this year.”

Does he believe the former England U21 international has what it takes to play at the highest level?

“Yes, I think he’s done remarkably well from being a kid at Sunderland when I was there and on the fringes, he was in the reserve team as it was then,” he recalled.

“He’s gone on and had a really good career for himself. I think he’s made himself a good player.”

I remember him we'll enough to know if he has space 25 yards out, people in the north upper will need to watch out

Great goal scoring record this season. Okay, a few penalties in there, but nonetheless a far superior goal scoring record than our midfielders. Shame it didn't work out for him with us and poor business letting him go for nothing. Clearly rated by Middlesboro.

Class player, shame he left when he did. Would have thrived under Mick Mac. Let's hope he leaves his shooting boots behind. 6 pens? Blimey better watch out for Borough diving...!

Even though I consistently got slated for saying this; was one of our top midfielders. Yes, he was a bit slow sometimes and he liked to do the crab, but pure, pure quality. I was gutted when he left.
Don't think we've got anyone in our team quite like him.

Has always been a decent player for those who know their backside from their elbow. Took a lot of unjust flack here which should have been directed at Keane instead.

Leadbitter was absolute cack yesterday. Just as he often was for us. Corners still at primary school level. Thankfully most Ipswich fans do know their backside from their elbow and gave him a suitable reception!!
