Liverpool Defender Linked
Sunday, 21st Dec 2014 10:19

Town are eyeing Liverpool youngster Ryan McLaughlin as a potential replacement for Tyrone Mings, according to one of this morning’s tabloids.

The Daily Star reports that the Blues are trailing the 20-year-old, who is yet to make a senior appearance for the Reds having joined them from Northern Irish side Glenavon as a 16-year-old.

Belfast-born McLaughlin spent time on loan at Barnsley last season, making nine appearances.

Capped twice by Northern Ireland at full level, McLaughlin wouldn’t appear to be a direct potential replacement for Mings as he is a right-back - as is his older brother Conor who plays for Fleetwood - but may be viewed as possible cover at full-back with Jonny Parr preferring to operate on the left.

Previously the Blues were reported to be keeping tabs on Charlton’s 21-year-old left-back Morgan Fox.

Mings continues to be linked with Arsenal and various other Premier League clubs in most of today’s papers.

The Gunners are still believed to be the frontrunners to sign the 21-year-old with manager Arsene Wenger having previously confirmed his interest. The Frenchman has said he has money to spend in January.

Elsewhere, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, QPR and Crystal Palace are amongst those to have watched the former Chippenham Town man in action in recent weeks.

Speaking on Friday, Town boss Mick McCarthy insisted that it would take an “absolutely astronomical” bid to persuade the Blues to sell Mings or one of his team-mates in January.

Meanwhile, former Blues chief executive Simon Clegg is again being linked with the role of general secretary of the FA with current incumbent Alex Horne stepping down next month.

Clegg, 53, is reportedly the leading contender with Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan also amongst those being considered.

Clegg, who left the Blues after almost four years at the club in February 2013, is currently the chief operating officer of the inaugural European Games, which will be held in Baku next summer.

Love all these"potential replacements" who we kept getting linked with, Mings isn't even going to be sold, it would have to be a really high price

Yet to see him play or anything so I can't judge him but surely if worst comes to worst and mings does leave I don't believe parr good enough and I would say we could spend some of the money we get off mings deal to get a realisable LB and a risky 16 yearold considering we want the automatics

I think Parr will be good enough. But I hope we don't need to find out

Eight-a-side for 30 mins is not the same as a top Championship clash for 90+. Nor does it matter if he had to stop because his toe was a problem. More like a training session.

Why would we sign this guy when we already have Matt Clarke. Seems nonsense to me.

Its going to be something in the region of 10 - 15 million to get us to part with mings, not sure wenger would be too keen on splashing that sort of cash, but if he does, then certainly a good bit of that money would go toward the squad for the second half of the season, nice to see us playing like that without him.

Matt Clarke is not a natural left back- more a future centre back in the mould of Tommy Smith. I think Tyrone will probably go, if not in January but at end of season and will go to Arsenal. Arsene Wenger sees him as a future central defender like Calum Chambers. £8 million is being talked about and if that is the case I don't think we should take a penny less than what they paid for Calum Chambers which I believe was in the region of £12 million, and furthermore ,if he is to go in the January transfer window we should be allowed to keep him for the rest of the season. I don't want hm to go but we have to realise that even if we are in the Premier League next season we will never be able to pay the wages players would get at the big clubs and money does talk.
Parr proved yesterday that although he doesn't have the potential of Mings he is a more than adequate replacement at the moment and is a full international.

The more points we accumulate now, the less attractive it is to sell in January and the more logical it becomes to defer to the summer. No point in selling just to find a replacement. Mings himself will benefit by playing, which will further up his value. Even his agent should be able to see that.

I thought Parr was excellent yesterday

If Mings leaves it will be disappointing and a real blow to our promotion challenge. But Parr is a decent player and as long as we spend money on fee players we will be fine.

Why on earth should we want to sell Mings?

Getting into the Premiership is one thing, staying there is another (just look at the newly promoted clubs struggling at the bottom of the Premiership table).

It is players like Mings we are going to need, even more then than now.

MM was only prepared to sell Cressy because he had Mings ready to replace him. Most of us think Mings is better than Cressy. So who would be better than Mings?

Parr is more than capable to play left back at Championship level. When we go up, I would look to strengthen then.

Also worth bearing in mind we have Ben Wyatt in the reserves. He looked good against wet spam in the pre season friendly. Plus we have also been tracking the young lad Wells from non league.

Parr was brilliant yesterday, shame if he has to go back on the bench.

Oldesworthu, appreciate what you're saying but I'm afraid I don't agree. In my opinion Cresswell is a much better player than Mings. Better crossing, scored goals, could defend. Mings is good and has great potential, but not as good as Cresswell yet. If Cresswell does recieve an England call up, as rumoured he will have deserved it. It's only Mings first full season and is doing well, but sometimes gets caught our of position too much.

I don't think Mick will want to sell. An astronomical sum suggests £10m+. (And Mings shows the promise gone worth it. He's quick, likes getting forward and puts great Alla in the box - Premiership must-haves).
Mings also owes Town at least a season in the Premiership in my opinion, and I'd like to think he has the confidence in his own ability and moral fibre to give that back to the club who showed confidence in him.
Arsenal can come to Portman Road for a hiding next season and we'll tell them how much he'd cost then.

Parr is a very good and industrious defender.Personally I don't think Mings will go as the only thing in his favour would be a larger salary but would it worth his while to be a fringe player? Don't think so.

Obvious Mings will be wanted by so called big clubs... Should be our record transfer out, when it happens. Would be worth ever penny too
