McCarthy Unsure of Palace's Plans for Williams
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2014 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says he’s not sure of Crystal Palace’s plans for Jonny Williams, who is close to returning from the groin injury which has sidelined him since the Watford match in early November.

The 21-year-old, who is still officially on loan with the Blues despite going back to the Eagles while he recovered from his injury, recently returned to full training.

His spell is officially up after the Charlton game on December 30th but Palace can recall him at 24 hours’ notice.

“I’m going to put a call in to Neil Warnock,” McCarthy said. “I don’t know what they’ll do with him. I would suspect they will use him.

“They were doing well while he was here, they were having good results, so there was no need. I think they were going to take him back and have a look.

“Whether that’s the case now or not, I saw Neil say he wants a few new faces. I don’t know, but they know there’s a home for him here if they want to loan him out again.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy says he’s not yet spoken to midfielder Darren Ambrose about his future. The 30-year-old is on a short-term deal which is up at the end of the month.

“I’ve just let that run its course,” McCarthy added. “I don’t need to yet. I’ll get the games out of the way first.

“He’s done all right, Darren. He was on the pitch on Saturday, he came on, so he’s contributing. I’ll sit down and talk to him when I’ve got these games out of the way.”

I think -Ambrose is one we should keep
For the ten minutes he was on on Saturday he bust a gut
The attack minded midfielder we need in our squad perhaps ?

I agree, Ambrose has looked fit and capable from the cameos I've seen. So long as it makes sense financially I would keep him, we're going to need what depth we have in the squad if we're realistic about staying in the top 2.

Ambrose has had an up and down career. i'd keep him cause he'll probably be player of the year next season with 20 goals from midfield.

I agree, a home grown player on a free who looks capable when given the opportunity, as long as he doesn't demand the big wages I'm sure he's been on previously then it seems like an easy decision...

Tbf I thought he DIDN'T look fit in the cameos I saw - especially Wigan away where we got overrun when he came on. That said when fit I like to think he could do a job and give us an option. MAybe it depends what else MM has up his sleeve - who else is available.

Always liked Ambrose, he had a knack of scoring goals against us.
Rather have him on our side.

I don't think Ambrose will ever reach the heights of his previous spell with us and don't believe he will command a regular place either. Providing that any new deal suits all parties I would not be adverse to keeping him as a squad player for the rest of the season.

I also think Ambrose has played his best football. At best he may be a part bit contributer. He is not capable of the workrate McCarthy demands from his players, in his heyday he wasn't either. As for being our 20 goal a season midfielder - lol! I would like to think MM can and will find better.
