Keeper Kenny Leaves Bolton
Monday, 19th Jan 2015 14:45

Town target Paddy Kenny has left Bolton Wanderers with his short-term contract at an end and, as revealed on Saturday, is now set to join the Blues, signing terms until the end of the season.

Following Town’s 3-1 win at Millwall, manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that a deal had been agreed to sign a new keeper as cover for Dean Gerken, who is out with the hip injury which is expected to sideline him for around a month.

Confirmation of Kenny's signing is likely to come on Tuesday morning before the Blues make the trip to Brighton ahead of Wednesday's game against the Seagulls.

Halifax-born Kenny, 36, started his career with Bradford Park Avenue, moving on to Bury and Whitby Town (loan) before he joined Sheffield United, initially on loan, in 2002.

After eight years at Bramall Lane, Kenny joined QPR and Leeds before signing a short-term deal Bolton, with whom he didn’t make an appearance, last summer.

In November the seven-times-capped Republic of Ireland international joined Oldham on loan, where he made four starts in a spell which ended earlier this month.

Was a much better keeper when he had no hair

If Gerken is only out for 1 month, then do we need to pay this guy to the end of the season?

A 1 month loan for someone else would be better financially.

not liked by many town fans but was a really good championship keeper in his day. good back up and experience for the others to learn from. If Bart got injured or sent off we'd be in the shiiiitttttttttttttteeeeeeeeeeee

Good option to have, probably not too expensive in terms of wages. @ cromwellblue: if we get another injury after Gerken has recovered it's probably good to have someone we know and has trained with the lads rather than going for an emergency loan. It's good planning and doing everything we can to stay where we are in the league.

he's better then any of the other keepers that we would have been able to get on loan during the season. We would only have been able to bring in someone young, and mick has already stated that he was bringing in someone knew because we needed experienced cover if anything was to happen to both of our goalkeepers as Crowe however good he may be, has no experience in the championship, and as our team has shown consistently during the season......experience in this league goes a long way. (that and a bit of mick magic). COYB

probably a good idea to have paddy in for the rest if the season because if gerks or bartman get injured again then we have experienced backup. Crowe not ready for 1st team yet, needs games out on loan somewhere.

@Cromwellblue: I don't wish to question your medical qualifications, but is it possible that Gerken's hip injury could take longer than a month or could he suffer an follow on injury while trying to get back to fitness?
In a season where we hope to finish in the top 2 (& are looking more & more likely to as the weeks go by) we sure don't want to be leaving anything to chance.
Also, would it count as a 3rd loan in one season if we had to look to extend it at the end of the month?

This could be a useful signing - he is still very capable, experienced, and would certainly be out to keep the other keeper's on their toes. And he would be most capable of doing so.

I wonder if mick is a bit concerned about Bart? Maybe more to this then meets the eye. Barts made a few errors lately and mick desperate for promotion for that bumper bonus

I know Paddy Kenny hasn't been the Bobby Robson Stand's favourite over the years (& I'm sure the feeling is mutual!).

But it's foolish to say he's not a competent and experienced keeper and we should welcome him at Portman Road.

It wasn't too long ago we were all up in arms when Scott Loach was losing out to Gerken (myself included) - but Loach's recent slide down the football league may go to prove that we need to trust MM and the goalkeeping staff to make the right choice for Town's keeper.

Welcome to Ipswich Paddy.
