Sharp Set to Stay at Leeds
Thursday, 22nd Jan 2015 15:39

Town appear likely to have to look elsewhere for another striker with Billy Sharp now expected to remain at Leeds.

The Blues made an approach to take the 28-year-old former Doncaster frontman on loan with a view to a permanent switch last week but the clubs were unable to agree a deal.

Sharp, who has regularly appeared as a sub for Leeds in recent games with manager Neil Redfearn wanting to keep hold of him, is now believed likely to stay at Elland Road during this transfer window.

Despite having added Freddie Sears from Colchester on Friday, the Blues are understood to be keen on bringing in another striker with Conor Sammon and Balint Bajner both having moved on in recent days.

Town have been linked with various other strikers, including Leicester’s Chris Wood and West Brom youngster Adil Nabi, while reports of interest in veteran Wigan frontman Marc-Antoine Fortuné are understood to be wide of the mark and manager Mick McCarthy has played down the chances of signing Kevin Doyle from his old club Wolves.

McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor were at the Norwich-Manchester United U21s match earlier in the month with Jesse Lingard, Will Keane, who is close to joining Sheffield Wednesday, and Nick Powell, a Town target in his Crewe days, all in the Red Devils’ line-up.

Elsewhere, Reading have signed midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, who was also linked with the Blues earlier in the week, on loan until the end of the season.

Doesn't surprise me, the number of times we have been linked with him and it never happens. Move on!

Chris Wood. Hopefully that's the last time Sharp is linked with us.

Mick's already ruled out Doyle, I'll add in a link to those quotes.

I still think Nick Powell could a good target. Fits the bill as an attacking option, but also can work in midfield.

Can't be many Irish strikers left to consider.

No drama. The fact that we signed Freddie Sears on the same day - and that Freddie's doing well for us already - made this prospective deal a whole lot less important in my view.

Sharp loves Yorks and he won't leave the area IIRC.

Not too worried about missing out on Sharp , with Freddie Sears and Noel Hunt doing well ( think Sears could be a really good signing ) , I would prefer a player more in the Murphy mould .

Not sure Sharp is the player he was and he would not come cheap and would probably expect to start . Sears is a much better option .

I really don't understand why we are looking for another striker, if indeed we are. We have plenty of fire power with the four we have and the defence are all capable of chipping in. We have lacked creativity and goals from midfield for longer than I can remember. This should be an urgent priority in my opinion.

I personally don't think we need another Striker. Sears is a good signing, opened his scoring last night. Noel Hunt is a work horse and has proved he can score goals for us. Those two with Murphy & McGoldrick is enough for us.

Nick Powell has a bit of an attitude problem doesn't he? I seem to rember hearing that's why Leicester sent him back. I'd like Joniesta and Chris Wood till the end of the season.

Joniesta knows the team, how we play, seems to really like the club and has a great relationshop with the fans. Seems a no brainer and would be competition with Bishop as it's hard to rely on an 18 year old week in week out for our promotion push.

I'm pleased about Sharp because think we need a larger framed striker as cover for Murphy. I believe we have goals in Sears but if Murphy gets injured we don't have any striker with ability in the air for the flick ons/holding the ball up/donkey work.

N.Hunt, Murphy and Sears have scored four between them in the last two games and we have McGoldrick back next match, so I'd agree with others than midfield has to be the area to strengthen. We have plenty of midfielders, it's just some added quality that would be good if we really want to push for the top two.

This is a relief - Sharp is not the player he was and Sears is a much better signing.

MM has some tough decisions to make about the defence. It's not as sound as it should be. Conceding three goals last night will anger MM. Sometimes there is that split second hesitation that is leading to us conceding goals when we should (and can be) rock solid.
I still don't know what is our best midfield line up. What do others think?

Why another striker? We have 4 already. Unless McGoldrick is more injured than is being admitted too or he's off before the transfer window.

Priority should be someone who will pick the ball up in our half and has the pace and skill to run at the opposition.

Much rather we secured a quality attacking midfield player.

It would be nice to play the ball 'through' the midfield as we did with Magic and Holland, rather than over it.

I'd like to see Bru grab that role, he does look rather good.

Of those named I would love it if we signed Lingard, an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal. Happy with our strike force and defence (although I wish he would play at RB)

I believe that MM is looking for another striker as cover for Murphs if he gets suspended/injured etc. Murphs has played every minute of every game because MM doesn't have a similar type of player at the club so he cant rest him if required. If Didsy injured or out of form then Sears/Hunt are decent enough replacements but MM wouldnt substitute Murphs for Sears or Hunt. Think MM was hoping Bajner was that player but sadly didnt he work out.

@foot_kick_ball_goal Nicky Powell has gone off the boil off the pitch, part of his issues have been turning up to work late at Leicester, I have family ties with on of the Crewe Alexadra players who were in the same acadamy group with Powell and always said he had a massive "All about me" complex, i don't think he would fit well here

If Murphy gets crocked we need a striker with his build not a striker who has no or little height. Sharp not the player he was so not bothered we have missed out on him.
