McCarthy: There'll Be Nobody Going
Friday, 30th Jan 2015 15:05

Town boss Mick McCarthy says no one will be leaving Portman Road before the transfer window closes on Monday, aside from youngsters perhaps going out on loan to gain experience.

January has seen the likes of Tyrone Mings linked with amongst others Arsenal, Newcastle and Crystal Palace, Teddy Bishop with Liverpool and Daryl Murphy latterly with Hull City, but McCarthy isn’t expecting a busy deadline day.

“Not really, there’ll be none going out, nobody going from here, unless I want them to go - a loan, somebody in for a kid,” he said.

“We’ve got 21 first-team players, none of them are going anywhere and if we could add something then we would. I’m hard pushed to get somebody better than the ones we’ve got.

“We’ve got where we are with the players we’ve got and they’re fantastic and I’m not looking to replace them.”

Asked whether he’s surprised not to have received bids for his players, he added: “If they see my face on the newsreels every time they ask me and the mickey-take when you ask me these questions they must think ‘why would we even bother?’.

“And besides which the crazy figures that keep getting mentioned, whether it’s what we’re supposed to be asking for or that somebody’s going to bid £3 million for one of our players. Well, they’re both nonsense, both bonkers, so I’m not surprised.”

He says he’ll look at utilising the loan system if required: “If the squad is thin - and we’ve seen how brittle it can be, we ended up with six subs at Millwall - we can take them until the end of March on the emergency loan system. If we need to use it and we can use it, then we will.”

He says he’s made no approach to Crystal Palace for former loanee Jonny Williams, although would love to see the Wales international return to Portman Road: “The position with Jonny Williams has always been that if he’s available and we could have him we’d take him at the drop of a hat.

“But Jonny’s still injured. From what I gather he tried to come back and he felt it again. It was a nasty tackle at the time and it’s left him out for a long time.”

McCarthy wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on the situation with 19-year-old former Shelbourne winger Dylan Connolly, who the Irish club wished good luck with the Blues on Twitter earlier today: “Until I do anything, I’ll let you know as normal.

“If we do sign somebody I think it would be nice if we could tweet it, if I could find somebody who knows how to use it!”

Later, he added: “If we do sign Dylan Connolly then I liked him [when he was on trial] in the summer, I thought he was a good player.”

Meanwhile, McCarthy confirmed that striker Paul Taylor is not training at the club following the end of his loan spell at Rotherham. The former Peterborough man is not in McCarthy's plans and has been told to find himself another club.

Mick has done a fantastic job with limited funds, but all this talk about being hard pushed to bring in better than what we have already got is bonkers as he often says. The squad is wafer thin and needs strengthening for the final push. Our best chance of promotion in years and other teams around us, who we have done well against, I might add, are adding to their squads, so why aren't we?? Would hate to miss out because of not strengthening. Would be so disappointing

And there will be nobody going from Derby, Cherries , Boro ,Watford or Forest but they are all bringing players in and spending money . If we cannot find a goalscoring midfielder better than what we have already then our scouts are very poor as we offer little to no threat at all from this area . ( Skuse to hit a hatrick now tomorrow !! )

When Mick's days as Ipswich manager comes to an end and hopefully not for a very long time may I add. Would be great to see him remain at the club in some capacity. Has done wonders for us and his sense of humour brilliant.

As always with MMc What you see is what you get, what a refreshing change for some of his so called "professional" colleagues. It still wouldn't surprise me one bit, if there was one or possibly 2 additions to the squad before the window closes.

In spite of Murph's absence, looking forward to a good and fruitful game tomorrow.

MM is hardly going to say to the press, these lads have got me into second place, but now I'm looking to replace them. Yes there may be better out there, but Mick is hardly going to shout it out is he.

I'm afraid there will be no new signings before Monday's deadline.
Mick will utilise the loan market shortly after.
Never mind promotion on £110000 spent is no mean feat.No other club will ever match that !

We need a couple of additions, even if it's only half season loans. Can't rely on short term loans. May miss key games.

we need two players just to stay in a play-off position. can only see disappointment and stubbornness for the next 4 months.

We need players who make late runs into the box from mid ,although in fairness the ball goes into the box from 100 yards at 60 mph ,a player can run at circa 18 mph ,so there is the problem lol

Let's be clear, Mick McCarthy and TC have done a brilliant job at Ipswich Town....I don't think it extreme to say they have dragged the club from the doldrums, and possibly relegation...but, and it is a significant but, MM can be stubborn and blinkered....it is clear investment is needed at this crucial time...for the first time in a number of years the Club are in with a true shot of promotion....the reality is harsh but it needs to be taken this year as the team will not stay together if promotion is not achieved....ME needs to be prepared to invest but more importantly, Mick must spend....there are players out there that are better and will fill the crucial gaps...please stop trotting out that well worn line Mick, that you will only invest in better players....and find a plan B when we come up against a team that has our measure....for that you need McGoldrick type players...splash the coin Mick and stop being a stereotypical tight ars** Yorkshire man....you can be so stubborn it drives one mad.....but you have made it fabulous to support Town again and for that alone I am grateful

"splash the coin Mick "

There isn't a coin to splash, and the decision as to whether there is a coin is not his. That is down to ME. However my thoughts about the above are that MM is making his position publically clear to ME about selling players, and appears to have drawn a line in the sand ie if ME won't back him with money then that's how it is, but don't try and sell a player either.
