McCarthy Hopeful on McGoldrick But Sears Ready to Start
Monday, 9th Feb 2015 10:50

Town boss Mick McCarthy is hopeful that striker David McGoldrick will be fine to face his former loan club Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Tuesday evening, the Irish international having suffered a thigh problem at Rotherham on Saturday.

The Town manager says McGoldrick, who had a month with the Owls in 2011, scoring one goal in three starts and one sub appearance, should be OK to face the South Yorkshiremen: “I’m hoping he will be fine, we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

Aside from McGoldrick, McCarthy says everyone else came through Saturday’s game unscathed: “Just about, there are a few bumps and bruises but nothing untoward.”

Luke Hyam (knee) and Dean Gerken (hip) are the only players currently sidelined longer term, although both are making progress.

McCarthy, who had his players in at Playford Road yesterday, says he could make a few changes with the Blues having picked up just four points from their last 15.

“Possibly. The ones who have been sat on the periphery, if they don’t get a game now when we’ve had a couple of difficult games and results haven’t gone as well, they’ll be thinking they’re never going to get a chance.

“To be honest, whenever I’ve had to change the team because of injury, suspension or illness, whoever has come in in whatever position, they’ve always contributed and done well.”

If McGoldrick fails to make it - or McCarthy is eyeing a change to his front line - the Town boss says recent signing Freddie Sears has shown he's ready to make his full debut having impressed from the bench.

“Yes, he is," McCarthy added. "I think he’s been really bright, really lively.

"We’ve talked about having somebody just to come in and be hungry for it, we’ve got some that have been on the periphery, not new faces but players who are desperate to play and certainly Freddie looks ready for it and up for it.”

A home evening match. If we settle for a draw and don't attack, ideally with Bishop & Sears, we won't make the playoffs.

Hopefully Mick will change our shape and give the likes of Sears, Ambrose and Bishop a start. We need to stop being scared to play and really go for it now.
I would like to know where this sort of confidence, movement and flair has gone?

We were such a handful and had a great spirit. Now we just seem so low and flat and its so frustrating. Lets get behind the lads again, they make us proud but they also make us angry and frustrated as they have done recently, but we still love them! A bit of change, even though later than we would have liked, could still prove the key. We are not out of it yet. We'd have taken this in August lets not forget that. COYB!!!!

I'd hardly call Wigan @ home and Rotherham away as difficult games!!!They were but shouldn't be for a top 6 side. Take your head out of the sand Mick and change your losing side. Parr must play. Bishop in and if dropping Mcgoldrick does the trick, do it! Sears is chomping at the bit to play stop being so stubborn and change it!!

Well said Swarby_7

We're totally at our best when we keep the ball down and attack with 100% energy & effort.
I think Mick goes on the defensive/trying to nick a 1-0 win far too often.

The time now is to play without fear and go for the opposition from the very first second.

Agree Lightningboy. This hoof ball very rarely produces the results we want - a goal!
We need to be able to use the wings more effectively and put punishing balls into the box as well as the centre midfield putting good quality through balls into the strikers too. It is hard to score goals if the strikers are not given good opportunities.
A good win on Tuesday is very much needed to life the players confidence, which must have been rocked by this current poor run.

Well said swarby 7, fully agree.
I am sure that Sears, Bishop and Ambrose will be chomping at the bit. One or two including McGoldrick do appear to be jaded and/or not fit so change needed just now
I would also like to see Parr in at right back, with Chambers playing in his best position of central defence. This would mean Smith dropping to the bench which may give him a needed jolt just now as it did with good effect last season.

I never thought I would say it but Didsy out with an injury may well force MM's hand to leave him out. I wont say he isn't interested and not trying as that simply cant be true BUT he just isn't the player he was and maybe without him, we can turn things around.

We still need someone creative in midfield and Bishop has to be that man. Lets not throw the baby out with the bath water and make wholesale changes but some changes are needed and I think MM will surprise us tomorrow evening with a few and hopefully, fingers crossed we will have a better performance and 3 points will follow !

Changes are required - can we do any worse? Many players looked jaded on Saturday, lethargic, leggy, uninterestd. Mings and McG were very poor it has to be said - no sense of urgency. Tommy Smith (who isn't helped by playing on the wrong side at CB) could not pass nor head it to anyone in a blue shirt and looked little better than a pub player. Many didn't do enough and Mick might do well to identify which players he should leave out, it was that bad.

Parr, Ambrose in..... Tabb, Anderson out. Even if Mick goes Chambers & Berra at CB, with Mings & Parr fullbacks, with a midfield of Skuse, Bru, Ambrose & Stewart, with Sears & Murphy up top. Needs freshening up.... loans required me thinks. If realistic about going up - squandering points and playing poorly against Rotherham, Wigan and Brighton ain't going to cut it I'm afraid. If we don't beat Sheff Wed tomorrow, I think we've had it and will end up mid-table at best.

Sorry to be so negative.

Have to say I agree with Slowerball. I would put Bishop in for Skuse though.

Nothing but a win will do simple as that really.

Ballmouth Play Derby and Brentford Play Watford so we have a great chance to make up for lost ground but if we can't take advantage of this then we do not deserve to be in the play-offs imo!

As frustrating as it has been for everyone, not least MM himself I'm sure, we all need to calm down a bit. No matter who ever won anything worth winning, they didn't get it because it was easy all season. We're going through a really tough spell right now, a good few players who had been doing extremely well are not doing so well now. If we're going to succeed we can't afford to carry anyone, we need everyone firing on all cylinders.
But lets not throw the baby out with the bath water on this forum. MM has precisely the right experience as a gaffer to get us through this blip, it was an almost identical situation for him when he took Wolves up to the Premier League - a winter struggle followed by kicking on and getting it done. I have complete confidence in MM and TC to get the team's confidence back. This is still a great season to be an Ipswich Town fan.

Surprised McGoldrick picked up an injury in the 20 yards he ran all game. Perhaps sitting a few games out is the kick up the backside he needs. Sears had more of an impact in his first 5 minutes of coming on than McGoldrick did all game. I'd bring Parr in for Smith, Bishop for Anderson and Sears for McGoldrick.

Kirbmeister added 13:57 - Feb 9
Up to recently McGoldrick has been our best player since he joined us and I reckon he's just knackered himself out. He may be carrying a knock and anyone who has ever played knows how that can affect your game. I agree he would be a great midfielder playing behind the strikers. Whatever happens get off his bloody case. He's just suffering a loss of form but constant criticism is hardly going to help him.

Based on form alone and perhaps fitness I think Didz has been lucky not to be dropped for Hunt or sears alongside Murphy. For whatever reason Didz hasn't been at the races for a while now, which is a shame coz he is still a class player at this level. I would play either 3 5 2 or 4 3 3 Tues night. Our rigid 4 4 2 takes us back to last season. We were playing good football in the fluid and interchangeable 4 3 3 earlier this season and don't know why Mick changed back to 4 4 2. We need to get back to winning ways tommorow night and that's a must. COYB

Surco - I know you are and always have been anti-MM but why the down vote on my comments without putting an argument over for your views to the contrary?

Might be worth a go putting Parr at LM. In the latter stages of the games at Millwall and Saints we looked like a transformed team with the Mings and Parr link up play. Also when Mings advances we look vulnerable on that left hand side, however with Parr covering we should be more sold. Also Anderson has been very poor recently in my opinion. Sears and the Bish must start. No impact players on bench unfortunately. Loan market must be used.

I just hope that tomorrow night when the team is announced we do not see Anderson Tabb and Skuse in the midfield as usual , so please rest them MM. ??

Could this game tomorrow be our most important game since 04/05?

Just thinking that we haven't had too many important league games since then apart from the relegation dogfights we had under Keane and Jewell.

Looks like having had time to reflect on another defeat to a lowly club,Mick has softened his stance on making changes.
Having said previously that were not changing bodies around thats for sure because they've been great, now looks like we might see changes thank goodness.
Hope we will also see a bit more attacking play with the ball on the ground especially as it is at home.

Give McG a rest even if he is fit, he needs to know that he isn't a guaranteed starter. I know McCarthy said bishop can play anywhere and whilst that's try he's not very effective unless he is playing down the middle.
