McCarthy: Booing Doesn't Help
Tuesday, 24th Feb 2015 06:00

“Home fans shouldn’t boo home players,” believes manager Mick McCarthy. The final whistle confirming Town’s 1-0 defeat to Reading at the weekend was greeted by boos from some areas of the ground, while defender Tommy Smith was amongst those to receive jeers from sections of the Portman Road crowd during the game.

“I’m aware that fans want to see us win, so they do get disappointed as we do, as I do, as players do,” McCarthy said.

“We were playing against a good team with good players, who scored a goal and made it difficult for us and there are times that we can’t go forward because they’re playing all in their half, it’s hard to find a pass so sometimes you have to go backwards or square.

“It’s just really counterproductive to jeer and boo your own players. Just stay to the end and boo me off. I’m cool with that. I’m not cool with that, I get pissed off with it but I can tolerate that more than during the game because it just doesn’t have any positive effect on anybody.

“I don’t know if any of you guys [the media] sit at work and get booed for doing your jobs. It’s not going to help you if you do, let me tell you.

“Whether it’s Tommy or any of us, our lads have been brilliant. They’ve been so good and the last time I got booed off we lost one in 20 after that, so let’s hope it’s another case of that.”

He added: “I don’t think home fans should boo home players, whether I’m at Wolves, Sunderland or Ipswich.

“I’ve been at a lot of clubs, I’ve played at a lot of clubs. It’s never helped the players I’ve played with or managed to perform better yet. I just think everybody should be appreciative.

“We’re appreciative of the support that we get and they should be appreciative of the job that our lads have done, especially somebody like Tommy coming through the academy.”

McCarthy says everyone should be pulling in the same direction as the fourth-placed Blues go into an important last 14 games of the season: “I think I’ve got good players and every week they commit to what I ask them to do and I get the best out of them and they get the best out of me. And we want to continue doing that.

“And you know what? We’ll do it better if we’re all in it together. It’s the way we’ve been all season. Players and fans alike.”

Regarding Saturday’s defeat to the Royals, McCarthy wasn’t particularly critical of his team’s performance: “I’ll settle for playing like that [again tonight].

"There might be some reading this who are screaming because we lost. But it’s not always that you’re rubbish when you lose.

“That’s what I hate about sport at times and I hate about football, that if you lose you’re rubbish. But that’s not quite the case.

“We watched Middlesbrough lose against Leeds and they were far from rubbish. And we were far from rubbish on Saturday. I thought we played well enough.

“We weren’t that bad we should have lost and we weren’t that good that we should have won it because we didn’t score the goal. That’s what it was, it was fine margins, we had enough chances, enough shots, enough balls in the box.

“It was one of those days, unfortunately. But again our lads committed to everything and we were usual selves but without the goal.”

I haven't booed since Jewell left. BUT, I don't think those that are booing are doing so to the players MM. I think it's aimed at you. Fans are venting their frustration at your team selections and tactics, which whether they're working or not, you refuse to budge from!!

I don't think you will ever get agreement over this. There is a school that says, "I pay my money, and therefore I have every right to express my dissatisfaction at a poor performance." I respect that. But on the other hand, there is the school to which I belong, which says that (blind?) loyalty to the team is what counts. I've never booed ITFC on the pitch in nearly 50 years, and I can't imagine I ever will; and I've had to sit through performances like the 0-3 home defeat vs Sheff. Wed. a few years ago. People are different. It's not necessarily right or wrong. We are all ITFC.

Bloody embarrassing, whatever or whoever people are booing. Shouldn't be surprised, Sir Bobby took the pelters, probably by the same lot doing it now.
Total lack of appreciation for the whole picture....never mind McCarthy, you're in good company.

The problem is the players have set a very level of expectancy throughout the fan base that when that level drops people are frustrated. I for one have and never will boo as it's very counter productive, yes Tommy should be dropped to allow Parr to come in and Chambo to move inside but booing and jeering during the game is unacceptable. Let Mick and the lads do there job were still in the mix for now. COYB

If MM says he would be happy with the performance against Reading repeated tonight v Brum then we should all be very worried. 10 points from last 24 against a host of teams we should have beaten if we are to be genuine contenders.

Booing IS counter-productive and only a brain dead moron would do it.It's madness. Booing makes failure (really can't handle a reverse can you???) more likely. We are in a good position, with a good honest hard working squad. It is so aggravating that all this seasons hard work could be undermined by the moronic few in the crowd. Let's hope that bournemouth and middlesboro have a few idiots in their crowds as well, lets hope our crowd isn't our achilles heel between now and the end of the season.

Does Mick simply need to set higher standards for performances? It's no wonder fans boo.

I'm also not sure it's the players fans are booing. I think it's frustration that our coaching staff can't find a way to stop our players going backwards all the time, or aimlessly long.

We're 4th in the league and you're trying to justify booing the manager - You're an embarrassment to the club and an embarrassment to your fellow fans.

I don't actually boo either (though moan like hell sometimes) but I think that MM misses the point.

For me, the annoyance does not come from losing, nor when an individual makes a mistake (it happens). My frustration grows when we play really poorly throughout, don't appear to be putting in 100% or continue to resort to Plan A - irrespective of the situation.

Do our best and lose to a (genuinely) better side and I have to accept it.

McCarthy's wrong. Booing does help - it helps identify the dickheads.

MM. you say as usual that Reading are a good team the same as the others, well if they are such a good team why are they mid table and we are still 17pts. ahead of them
after giving them 3 last Sat.????

I am a big MM fan and can't believe where our team is compared to before he took over. I know he doesn't play the style of football we are all looking for and when we don't win playing without that style can be ugly to watch and more frustrating. HOWEVER the big picture is we have a realistic chance of promotion for the first time in 10 years and why any fans would want to jeopardise this with negativity I just don't know.

Lets stick together and shout louder for the lads starting this evening! COYB!

There is good reason for mm not changing tactics and players, and that is ; they would not work

Booing your own players or Manager is ignorant, rude and most of all counter productive, of course we all go home miserable, disappointed and yes angry too at certain things that have happened when we lose, but the booing will achieve nothing positive.

There's no wonder people are booing really. So many years in this league to finally have a chance to go up then points are being dropped against poor opposition. Back to back wins against better teams are promising then the fans have to see a lack of points from easy games.

I have the highest regard and respect for MM but sometimes what he tells us is not true. We did not play well on Saturday although we still had the chances to win it. The back four is not a cohesive unit and must be changed. I do not boo as I'm out of that stadium as fast as I can at the end of the match - I would not boo anyway but those who do are showing their frustration at not winning. Had we won 1-0 with that performance on Saturday no one would have booed. Its just the frustration coming out.

Absolutely no need to boo after the season we have. I agree that we have had a blip lately and one or two poor performances but we are 4th in the league after being 24th when Mick took over. He has spent almost nothing on transfer fees and this is the first season in ages that we have a realistic chance of promotion. I agree with Steve ITFC Sweden that there will always be a debate over whether it's right to boo the manager/players.

COYB!!

Booing a team that's fighting for automatic promotion is laughable.

Another sad example of how football acts as a mirror for all the ugly and unattractive aspects of human behaviour prevalent amongst the wider society in which it operates. The culture of the individual rather than the team and the acceptance of just letting everything hang out there in public emotionally means that no one really knows how to conduct themselves anymore when it comes to handling disappointment, frustration or adversity. Mangers, fans, politicians, business leaders....all colluding in a culture of selfishness, blame, shameless lying and shirking responsibility. Add in eye watering and obscene levels of money for mediocre talent alongside moronic social media, rip off prices and tabloid punditry....simmer for a few years and voila, the perfect environment for a transactional relationship in which everything is fair game. So, even if its your team and overall the team is having its best season in years, the minute a pass goes astray or you lose a game you expected to win, you go right ahead and boo. Oh and send some abusive tweets too. It's your right to "freedom of expression". Football is a horrible squalid mess in which everyone deserves everyone else.
