Bassett Denies Stewart Slagging
Bassett Denies Stewart Slagging

Barnsley manager Dave Bassett has denied making the derogatory comments about Marcus Stewart that were widely reported late last week and at the weekend. The former Sheffield United manager said that he had actually tried to sign Stewart from Bristol Rovers when he was the boss at Bramall Lane and that he would have readily have spent £2.5 million on Town's new striker had he the cash to do so.

Bassett was supposed to have said that the former Huddersfield man wasn't worth the cash Town have paid for him. However, this is now bitterly denied and Bassett has sent a message to Stewart via George Burley so that the striker doesn't think badly of him. Apparently the report originated from a Sheffield reporter.

Town fans have not been best friends with Bassett since he slagged Town off in his days as Crystal Palace manager. Town made him eat his words on that occasion beating his side 4-1.
