McCarthy: We Should Never Have Lost
Wednesday, 4th Mar 2015 22:51

Frustrated Mick McCarthy felt there was no way Town should have been beaten 2-1 by Leeds at Elland Road.

“I am totally and utterly pissed off because we should never have lost the game,” McCarthy said at his post-match press conference.

“I’ve just been looking at [the incident which led to the freekick for the first goal], I don’t know how they managed to give a foul one way or the other there for that, when they gave the foul against Ty. But when he does, Bart should have saved it. That’s the upshot of it.

“Having got back in it, I know their keeper should have saved ours as well, there’s no doubt about that.

“Their second one, we’ve got a great chance in their box and it’s not like us to get done as we did.

“And even then we’ve had the opportunity of the penalty and he’s not struck it with any great conviction, and that’s our leading goalscorer. I think we’ve had the best part of the game, to be honest.”

Town fell to back to back defeats for the first time this season - they are the last Championship side to do so - and McCarthy is disappointed to lose for the second time in four days.

“It’s not a good time, I fully understand that, you don’t have to ask me the question,” he continued. “It’s never good to have back to back defeats.

“The position that we’re in, we could have got back in the top six. We’ve got Brentford on Saturday.

“All the things, we’ve played a day later than them, we’re travelling back, we’ll get back at half-two. We had an opportunity to get back in the top six tonight and we’ve pissed it away unfortunately.”

He says his team selection - Daryl Murphy and Freddie Sears were both left on the bench - wasn’t why the Blues lost.

“Brentford left their centre-forward on the bench last night, funnily enough,” he added. “I’ve no problem with the team changes I made whatsoever.

“I thought that Varney and Wood played well and they’re a real handful. Varns was unlucky with his [early disallowed] header, if he’s offside it’s marginal.

“And the two lads will be fresh for Saturday, they’ll start on Saturday. But that’s not cost us the game by any stretch of the imagination.”

McCarthy tried to sign Billy Sharp, who scored the second goal, on loan in January, the former Sheffield United and Doncaster man turning down the opportunity to join the Blues in order to fight for his place at Leeds.

“He’s a goalscorer,” McCarthy said. “And we’ve got them as well. We’ve got the leading goalscoring and we’ve got Freddie, who has come in and scored. We’ve got Chris Wood, who was one of the leading goalscorers in the league last year.

“If you’d have said at any stage that we’ve got Chris Wood and Varney on the pitch at any time I’ve been here in the two and a half years, I think we would have been delighted with having those two to select.”

Varney is a former Leeds player and will have been desperate to do well against his old club, particularly with their fans giving him a hard time, but McCarthy says that didn’t come into his thinking when selecting his team: “Not at all and I wouldn’t take anybody being in my ear.

“I’m slightly, no I’m very disappointed and offended that you might even think I’d be influenced by a player in my earhole to play. They’ll play if they warrant playing and I thought he did.”

Leeds manager Neil Redfearn thought his team deserved all three points: “It was a great win. It was a tough game, a hard-fought game. A typical Championship encounter. They’re up there for a reason, Ipswich.

“They’re very combative, but they play football. But I thought we were the better side tonight.

“I thought the game was won and lost in midfield and we absolutely dominated that area. Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt and Luke Murphy were outstanding.”

Redfearn was impressed with striker Sharp’s performance and particularly the way he took his goal: “Brilliant, Sharpy was outstanding again tonight.

“He’s led the line really well, he took his goal outstandingly well, it’s behind him, he’s kept it down and got over it. It was a great strike and he looks a polished striker.”

The Leeds boss confirmed that it was Sharp’s decision not to join the Blues in January: “He didn’t want to go, which is great for Leeds United.”

I'm wondering the same thing.
But the fact is we lost - your job is to put it right. Firstly, 4 - 3 effing 3.
Secondly, I still believe you can, Mick.

You're wrong Mick, leaving Sears on the bench has cost us, it's ok bleeting about incidents within the game, but Sears' pace would of killed a poor Leeds backline, Tabbs set pieces were shocking on Sunday & by all accounts were tonight too, I think the majority of fans would accept a loss if we'd of gone out & given it a bloody good go, but all this pussy-footing around playing for a draw is biting us on the arse.....

......... you pee'd off ? ........... your team selection got what most of us expected.

So how do you think it makes us feel ? ........ especially our 'forever special' travelling fans, who must now be having another 'stinker' of a return journey - with far less in their pockets.

Haha - 'Brentford left their centre forward on the bench last night funnily enough' - nothing funny in that, they scored 4. Is that why Sears and Murphy were benched?

Unfortunately Mick you got it terribly wrong tonight and us the supporters are 'pi*$ed off'

I was there , it was not fair that we lost , however we were architects of our own down fall. Varney big effort , Wood look way off being class.he did nothing right and I sat watching thing how good Murphy is. Skuse busy and ok , Tabb busy no end product above all though defensively we were terible. All the back 5

How many times have we heard that this season? If he played players in their natural position then we probably wouldn't have. I'm not going to be one of the gimps slating McCarthy like many on here, but he frustrates me with the stuff he says when we don't win. He has his favourites (Tabb, Skuse, Chambers) etc that he will leave the team completely unbalanced to accomodate them. That midfield 4 of Anderson, Tabb, Skuse and Parr (great defender but not a natural winger) is one of the weakest midfields I've ever witnessed as an Ipswich fan.

Well, we did lose it and we have lost 5 out of the last 9 now. Highly depressing. So close to the top two and the best chance we have had in years to go up, but in all honesty we've looked nothing like a promotion time for quite some time.

At least Norwich lost.

O I must be a gimp?!?!? I ain't slating McCarthy, I'm stating a fact that McCarthy got it wrong tonight, shame he won't hold his hand up & admit it, rather than hiding behind a terrible decision in leaving Sears on the bench. I get Murphy being rested, he has looked jaded & understandably so, but Surely Sears with Wood or Sears with Varney, would of made far more sense, but what would I know I'm just a gimp.....

Wasn't referring to you mate, I fully agree with your post. Plenty of gimps on the other links that I was talking about. Wasn't intended for anyone this thread.

We lose many a game due to lack of drive and imagination in midfield hence the fact that midfield have scored 1 or 2 goals between them and defenders are scoring more than them on their own. When I saw the team selection it didn't fill me with excitement but filled with dread. The first half seemed like we were constantly under pressure. We can't keep saying if this had happened or. This had gone our way we would have won.

He said it against Norwich if Freddie had scored first and no doubt if the first goal wasn't disallowed IT would have been different. It would have been different if we had changed things earlier like half time.

We have Brentford at the weekend and we need to win this no more excuses. The fans that don't slate MM will soon stop having faith when we start being overtaken in the table losing sight of even a playoff place. We have a team that is good enough to win games only if the team and tactics can give us an advantage over the opposition. Tabb and Anderson and Smith were what I was surprised at not the changes up front. IT ISNT WORKING.

Not looking forward to that long walk home after the game on Saturday after losing yet another game with the same team and tactics. I also don't like to hear the team getting booed at the endow the game but can understand the frustration of the fans. Go for a win no a draw. COYB

Firstly, is there a clause which allows anyone who bought a half season ticket in January to get their money back, you have all been seriously mis-lead!

Secondly I still cannot understand the decision to leave Sears on the bench just to rest him. He has hardly played many full games since joining us, he has been looking sharp in recent games. Why then is Tabb still being picked? He has played more football than Sears of late, the arguement does not wash.

Murphy is a shadow of himself, does not matter how many goals he has scored. Its how many he will score, not many - he needs a rest. Create a partnership between Woods and Sears and bring Murphy back in time when he is fully fit.

I went and just got back home . We could well have got a point after an even first half - where the offside apart we didn't have a shot . The sears and Murphy prep landed subs did bring more threat ... But too much long ball . I felt Mings had a decent game but chambo lacks delivery and the midfield rarely passed on the ground or forward . Average fare . The penalty miss costs us a bit of momentum and what might be a crucial point plus the chance of a grandstand finish . This month has started very badly , several tough games to come now and confidence ebbing .
Sure there will be more dropped points from all the teams ( thanks Wigan ) but I would amazed if top 2 is still a possibility soon . 6 th place now ? I'd take it without getting on the bus . Plus points ? Mings , Sears and a committed performance but overall precious little quality from either team . The championship is competitive but has a dirth of players who are skillful . 2 stars at best . Onwards to the bees , but the buzz is faint tonight

He's stuck in a rut he now doesn't know what's he's best side due to the players he's brought in, varney? I mean come on he's ok for back up but to bring him in a massive away game when we have our top scorer and a pacey lad who's scoring on the bench?!! Par is a full back not a winger, tabb however hard he tries I don't think he would get into any top half of the tables starting 11, and punching the air chambers is the only good thing he gives us, trying to fit him in, he's a center half not a full back, hes not confident in precession ping ping ping, I have always defended mick as he's done a fantastic job but I must admit I'm scratching my head

I too cannot believe the team MM put out tonight. I know it is easy to be wise after the event but the dropping of Sears to me is plain ridiculous. Also for heavens sake why can't a manager with the experience of ours not see that Chambers has got to play centre back with Berra al though he is worryingly wobbling a bit now. Despite the aforementioned our real problem is creativity from midfield and if Bishop is fit for Saturday he has to start and not on the flank MM but in central midfield. There has also got to be question marks over Bart now. Yes he does come for crosses but as a shot stopper and anticipating balls that come towards him he is looking shaky. I honestly believe we have hit the buffers and it will be a momentous task now to get into the play offs. Look at our run in and then look at that of Brentford. Saturday is so very important now and anything less than a win and our season could be coming to an early end. Tonight was disappointing enough for our fans and I have stupidly bought tickets for the trip to Middlesbrough. Once a blue always a blue and you never know in football but it does not look good at the moment.

I wish the local media would stop pussy footing around with MM and ask him the following questions:
Why does he unbalance the team by playing Chambers, a CB, at RB to accommodate Tommy Smith.
Why is Parr, our full back, either not making the starting 11 or being played at RM.
Why does Tabb take our corners!? Any professional footballer who cannot beat the first man from a corner should be club fined. It's unbelievably slap dash.
Why have we not been properly informed to the seriousness of McGoldricks injury.
Why after stating that, and I quote, "I will only sign players that are better than what we already have", you then go and sign Varney and Chaplow? Who clearly do not offer anything more than what we already have.
Why do you travel to Leeds and quite clearly set up to play for a draw?
Why revert back to the hoof ball tactics that didn't work at the start of the season? When we changed to 433 we went on our best run of results since the Joe Royle days. Why change back? And still insist on packing the midfield with central players?

GiveusaWave added 02:11 - Mar 5
Tabb is an essential component of our squad given our tactics (hoofball). He feeds the ball back to the defence who can then pass it across to Chambers (hence his need to be at right-back). Chambers can then hoof it forward. For next game;-

Bialkowski
Chambers, Smith, Berra, Mings, Parr (back 5)
Anderson, Skuse,, Hyam (if fit), Tabb (midfield 4)
Varney (to be replaced at 60 by Wood or Murphy)

Tactics: Hoof...Hoof...Hoof....
