Wood Has Goal Ruled Out as New Zealand Lose
Tuesday, 31st Mar 2015 14:08

Loan striker Chris Wood won his 40th New Zealand cap but was thwarted as he aimed to add to his 13 international goals as the All Whites were defeated 1-0 by South Korea in a friendly in Seoul this afternoon.

Wood, 23, who skippered his side, will feel aggrieved not to have scored with a 44th minute effort controversially ruled out for a foul in the lead-up. South Korea's Cho Young-Chul won it with a goal in the 86th minute.

The striker later tweeted: "Didn't deserve to lose! The lads played absolutely amazing. Created loads of chances and defended great. Can't fault any one of the lads.

"To all the lads that made their debut, they were quality, didn't once look out of place and took every moment in their stride! Well done!"

This evening, academy schoolboy Andre Dozzell will be in action for England’s U16s at the Montaigu Tournament in France where they face Mexico in their opening group game.

The England youngsters subsequently face Turkey on Thursday and the Ivory Coast on Saturday. They will then take on one of France, Brazil, Belgium or Morocco from the other group in the play-off stage of the competition.

Central midfielder Dozzell, 15, who will join the academy as a full-time scholar in the summer, has previously won five caps at U16 level.
