McCarthy: Fans Were Terrific
Monday, 13th Apr 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with the part the Portman Road crowd played in the Blues’ 3-2 home victory over Blackpool on Saturday.

“I thought they were great when we went 1-0 down [in the fourth minute], I thought they were terrific,” he said.

“I didn’t hear any groans or moans or boos, I heard encouragement and that probably got us back on the front foot as much as me and TC barking orders at them

“That really helped, so I thought they were great. And even when it went to two-all I didn’t hear them turn against us, which was fab.”

Looking ahead to Tuesday’s game at home to Cardiff City, McCarthy confirmed that Luke Varney is a doubt having limped off with a tight hamstring in the first half.

He says he’ll assess the condition of all his players today and tomorrow, including Teddy Bishop - named the Dale Roberts Academy Player of the Year on Saturday evening - who completed the entire 90 minutes of a senior game for the first time at the 19th time of asking.

“We’ll have to see how they recover, all of them, Freddie, Bish,” McCarthy added. “We’ve all just applauded Bish, that was the first 90 minutes he’s completed so it was a momentous game for him.”

The Blues moved back up to sixth as a result of Saturday's win and Blackpool boss Lee Clark believes McCarthy can take the Blues back into the Premier League.

“Without a doubt, he’s done it many, many times, with different clubs," he said.

"He gets a group of players who are honest, work extremely hard, give everything for the jersey and I think they’ve got a really good chance.

“When you look at it, compared to the other clubs that are up there Mick hasn’t had a huge transfer budget to deal with, if any.

“So for him to be challenging with some of those clubs is a credit to him and his staff and his players.”

Meanwhile, Town’s U21s are in action away against Bristol City at Ashton Gate this afternoon (KO 2pm). With the first team playing tomorrow, few if any senior players are likely to be involved.

The atmosphere at times was dead but you have to take in account of lack of away fans 175 dont make much noise which i personally think affected the mood of the crowd . Also yes its not been the best run of form town have been in but look how far mm has taken us since the dark days of rk and pj .

Ha, was he actually at the game?

This reeks of sarcasm! Surely he's joking? We are easily up there with the worst home fans in the country. All I ever hear is negative and moaning and it takes us 2 goals to get behind the team. It's embarrassing!

Are you lot for real!^^^^ I was at the game with my son and there was times when the 4 corners of the ground was cheering and getting behind the team MM is right, the fans was great. Yes we are not the best but we are not the worst. So stop moaning about yourself (as I take it your all town fans) and make some noise then!

Flewitt85 - if you think that was cheering then you obviously never came to games until 5 years ago. Before that Portman road used to be loud and the atmosphere was great. But now? We can't even make noise for the Norwich game. It's pathetic. I always sing and I'm moving my ticket to near section 6 as some lads down there are doing their best to try and create some noise. Our away support has been top this year but we can't seem to recreate it at home.

We don't make the most amount of noise as fans, but that doesn't mean we aren't as passionate or love our club any less. I go to portman road to watch my football team, i admire those that do sing and show there support that way, it creates a far better atmospher, but personnaly if I wanted to sing I'd join a choir. Plus we wouldn't have got our nickname if we made more noise. (no noise from the tractor boys)

Don't start mentioning Sears in connection with players recovering in time for Tuesday Mick. He has to start.

I guess he is doing it more to recover his reputation from the Huddersfield line-up debacle more than anything else.

Here's something to bloody cheer about.....for the first time in donkey years we have a shot at the play off, regardless of any thing else people are unhappy with!!
Surely it's time to put all differences aside and CHEER on the boys, starting tomorrow night!!

Davin44- yes iv been to a few games since then and I had a season ticket 3 years ago, so i know what it's been like.

Like I said " we are not the best but we are not the worst " we can be better but the only way we can do that is if everyone join in!

So let's get together and make some noise

He couldn't come out and say sometimes I wonder if there are any fans here.

We are a mixed bunch in the stands Sometimes its great and other times, like Saturday I think most people expected an easy win which on reflection was unlikely. The is one guy in the bobby robson lower stand who looks like uncle festa who was singing were going down like the blackpool as sson as they scored the first goal and then became our greatest ever fan once we equalised. Unfortunately he does this at every game and personally I wish he would go and support Chelsea.

So hang on, he got stick a while back for saying we were wrong to boo and be negative at the Huddersfield game, but then when he praises our support, people on here are still being negative.

What is wrong with some of our fans? Seriously

Blaa Blaa Blaa Blaa Blaa - boring comments from boring people!
Do me a favour - be encouraging loud and support the team yourselves for the remaining games and see what happens!

Strange, that was the worse atmosphere in many years (proabbaly didn't help with only 150 Blackpool supporters), and I hard loads of abuse towards the players, booing Tommy Smith when he kept hoofing it aimlessly towards the touchline etc . . . . ! Not saying that the abuse was right, just saying its a strange thing for Mick to come out and say.

With all due respect to the blackpool fans I think sometimes our fans are similar to what's going on on the pitch where we are all expecting a win and turn up a bit subdued expecting it to be a formality, then when we play a decent team we are a bit more fired up. I sit in section 6 but close enough to the middle to hear that the majority of the time the two sides of the same stand are completely out of sync or even singing different songs so I'm not sure if this is down to acoustics? (No expert) but it certainly doesn't help. And just quickly about us having bad fans, who are good ones? Newcastle fans who start to boo when they concede a goal (and generally know very little about football)? Real Madrid fans who boo and whistle when some of the best players in the world don't pass the ball? Sunderland fans that leave at half time when they're losing? Or Milwall fans that turn up to games take drugs in the toilets and are just there to have a fight with other fans or each other?

I thought we were a bit subdued Saturday but then there was a lot at stake and I for one was very nervous. We were never really in control of the game and the Referee and the linesman on the Coop side made some very strange decisions which all added to the frustration.

The fans will never ever be the same at PR till the away supporters are moved back to North Stand (Sir Bobby) end. We all know if the North Stand rocks, then so does the whole ground. This I have no doubt would attract more supporters to the ground. We actually pay for policing so they can hold them in the away block for another ten minutes so our fans can get clear. Until the away fans are moved the atmosphere at PR will be sh1t.

In my opinion we have some of the worst home support (atmosphere) in the country.

But we have away support to rival anyone. I absolutely love away games for it.

"We" often moan about players, the manager, the directors but actually if the home supported gave a little more each week I think there is no question that we'd be in the Play offs this season (at the least).

There hasn't been an atmosphere since seats were put in behind the goals, if the truth be known.
