Injured Williams Returns to Palace
Tuesday, 21st Apr 2015 13:08

Town have confirmed that Jonny Williams has returned to his parent club Crystal Palace after suffering a recurrence of his groin injury in yesterday’s U21s defeat to Bristol City. As reported yesterday, the 21-year-old limped off a minute before half-time during the 3-2 loss to the Robins.

Following yesterday's match, Williams was assessed by Blues physio Matt Byard and has subsequently returned to Selhurst Park for treatment with a view to next season.

Williams rejoined the Blues on deadline day in March for a third loan spell, having seen his second curtailed by the injury which he initially suffered in the 1-0 home victory over Watford in November.

The Wales international hadn’t played a game since picking up that injury - sustained when he was fouled by Hornets’ defender Joel Ekstrand - having struggled to regain his fitness and made only two sub appearances during his latest stint at Portman Road.

Williams, who made four starts and one sub appearance, scoring once in this season's earlier spell, adding to one goal in 11 starts and two appearances from the bench last year, was due to remain with the Blues until after the play-off semi-finals if Town are involved.

Feel sorry for the lad. Gets crunched at every opportunity. Hope he recovers to go on and have a long and successful career.

Feel some are being a bit unfair on Jonny calling him injury prone. I don't necessarily think he is prone to injury I think its more that he's a skillful, clever footballer who is young and spritely when on the ball. He often chooses to take a man or two on and carry the ball forward to make things happen. Quite often, older or slower or frustrated players (or a combination of all those attributes) get annoyed or struggle to find a way to deal with him and so either miss time a tackle or, try to kick lumps out of him. Both of these situations can cause injury and sometimes serious ones. Jonny's injury picked up against Watford for which ruined his season this year was not his fault but was a case of Ekstrand losing out for pace with Jonny so instead jumped in on him to stop him. I don't believe for one minute Jonny is injury prone and think he is often targeted by the opposition, which is not his fault. I've seen him walk away from some horrendous tackles but inevitable one eventually gets him and causes him a big problem. So in my view not injury prone but more of a target. It does though take away our plan B as some have said. I think this has been the reason Mick didnt add much to his squad during the window, he was holding out for Jonny to complete his loan. Now a really useful player who could have made a big difference looks likely to be out and gone so I just hope we can find another way to get the results we need should we get 6th or even take 5th from Derby. I trust Mick, he does what is needed to get the job done with what he has available to him, but I just hope we have enough. COYB! Lets just get the last two games and those 4 points out the way first!

No surprise at all. On the plus side, we are where we are in the league with only a small contribution from Williams.

Get yourself fit over the summer lad and we'll see you in our starting XI for next season.

Well, that was a waste of money then.

It's a pity, but we do have Bru and Ambrose coming back, both of whom are talented midfielders, and they're ours.

So if he made a miraculous recovery and return to fitness , could he then come back and complete his spell with us, to include the Playoff Final that he would've not been eligible for?

(hypothetically, of course)

That's exactly what I was wondering - ow would that work? Does is still count as the 93 days or what ever it is

Even if there was a miraculous recovery, and it seems they've given up on him returning this season now, he wouldn't be able to break his loan as we're after deadline day.

I hope this isn't going to be another occurrence of a great player who is kept from greatness with injury problems, such a great asset to the team.

Such a shame for Jonny & us! Great that we have got to this position without him (& McGoldrick) playing much, but I guess it's better for us that he pulls up in a U21's game than on Saturday when he's just come on & we've used all our subs?!?! Best wishes Jonny, leave it with us, we'll secure promotion, you get yourself fully match fit, & we'll be back with a cheeky bid!! 👍⚽️👍⚽️

He's a super player and one we'd want next season BUT I still don't understand why MM
a) didn't get replacement in January
b) waited until last minute in emergency loan when he still ahdn't played for Palace to prove his fitness
c) didn't return him earlier when it was clear there wasn't a chance of him playing beyind semis.
At least he's got summer to recover and then return fully fit.

a) didn't get replacement in January?? What, he was a loanee and we didn't seem to be missing him.
b) waited until last minute in emergency loan when he still ahdn't played for Palace to prove his fitness - What are you talking about? Pointless signing him earlier as he'd have not even been fit enough for the bench
c) didn't return him earlier when it was clear there wasn't a chance of him playing beyind semis? We knew when we signed him he couldn't play beyond the semi's but at the time MM was looking at us possibly making the top two and even if he's only available for the semi's he could have helped make sure we made the play-offs, something we still haven't done as yet. We signed him and hoped he'd be able to contribute, he got injured again... unless you are trying to use the morons refuge of hindsight to assert some sort of wisdom what the hell is your point?

Agree with Swarby 7. Williams not injury prone but sadly the great reviews he got whilst playing for us made him a marked man. And he played with such desire and fearlessness that the lump he got in the Watford match was one that will always be waiting in the wings for him
He may not have the same potential threat if he chooses to or is encouraged to change his style, but his slightness of frame and that almost cheeky persona will constantly irritate today's hatchet men.
He made us smile for a while as his first thought was to play football at pace, go forwards and look to win.

hoppy - dont think there will be a miraculous recovery and then Williams returning to full fitness before the play offs. Perhaps if the play offs were 6 months away and Williams was likely to play for Palace in the meantime, but certainly not bearing in mind the play offs are next month.

The poor guy needs a complete rest, being the boy he is he wants to play and has tried to get fit, but after that wretched tackle from the Watford thug the underlying damage reappeared and finished his season and any hope of us seeing him in a town shirt bringing such a refreshing attacking option which we all greatly appreciated to an end, get fit young man don't try and rush it then come and give us a hand in the premiership next year!!

That's a real shame for him & us. Against Bournemouth we had Joniesta & MacG on the bench, now we don't have either! Two massively creative & influential players.

Everyone keeps on about Williams and Mcgoldrick we are in 6th position nearly in the playoffs how much have these two players contributed.

I think this highlights just how little protection some players get from referees. Some of the officials we have had at PR this year have been dreadful, the level of competent refereeing have sharply fallen over the last few seasons imo.
Well the last home game is upon us let's lift PR for the team on Saturday.
COYB's.

Real shame----quality player.

Seems like he was not fit when he came to us----a late gamble by MM which failed----but why leave so late?

Williams and McGoldrick are both great players - but agree that neither have played a big part in getting us to where we are now .... and neither will play any part in us going to where we end up !

Do I want them in a town shirt next year -- YES, sure i do (or "Hell yes", as David Milliband would say!)

But should we complain at Mick, or bemoan our "woes" because they are out ... NO, not for one minute.

I hope that both Dids and Johnny get fully fit and we can enjoy watching them in full flow again soon - hopefully in Ipswich Blue (as opposed to Orange, please!)

This is a terrible disappointment both for us and the lad. A disappointment for us as I hoped that his contributions would ensure us a play off place. A disappointment for the lad as I'm sure that he is desperate to play football for us and the injuries are not his fault.
