Murphy Only Town Player in Top 10
Thursday, 23rd Apr 2015 13:20

Striker Daryl Murphy was the only member of the Town squad to make the top 10 in this season’s Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year voting, the Blues 24-goal top scorer finishing second behind Middlesbrough’s on-loan Chelsea frontman Patrick Bamford.

Each Championship boss was asked to name their top five players in order with the scores then added up.

Murphy was short-listed for the gong alongside Bamford, who was announced as the winner at Sunday’s Football League Awards, and Watford’s Troy Deeney.

The Football League have now released the top 10, which also includes former Blues skipper Grant Leadbitter.

Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year - Top Ten
1 Patrick Bamford (Middlesbrough)
2 Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town)
3 Troy Deeney (Watford)
4 Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth)
5 Matt Ritchie (AFC Bournemouth)
6 Chris Martin (Derby County)
7 Grant Leadbitter (Middlesbrough)
8 Alex Pritchard (Brentford)
9 Lee Tomlin (Middlesbrough)
10 Harry Arter (AFC Bournemouth)

All attacking players, no defenders of any kind. Just supports the theory that it's always the attacks that take the plaudits and never the defenders/goalkeeper

No Norwich players

Its usual that the strikers/attcking midfielders catch the eye and figure prominently in these type of lists, so no surpise about Berra.
As for Martin, agree the guy is a to$$er but he is a very similar type to Murph who has been out recently with an injury. Had he stayed fit he may well have topped the scoring charts and taken a top spot.

Leadbitter's just a penalty man.

Congrats to all the people who insisted Leadbitter was toilet the entire time he was here.

Berra and Murphy were the only ITFC players in FourFourTwo's poll of best players in the football league. Berra at 33 and Murph at 6.

Souperjim could be that being a native of the north east Middlesborough is a better fit for lead bitter. He didn't exactly set the world alight at town and was a poor choice of captain. He was also the last player to hold the club to ransom with regards to letting his contract run down. Funny that he started performing well from Jan until the end of the season knowing full well he wasn't going to extend his contract, putting himself in the shop window as it were. His set pieces were also terrible and his goal scoring record wasn't remotely near what it has been at boro. Now coincidence or toilet?? You decide

Only 5th for Matt Richie ?? I think his attitude has lost him votes - his skill and performances made him one of the favorites surely?

Well done Murph - great season ... shame you were in your dry patch when the votes were cast !

Lazy from the managers, defenders/ goalkeepers should get way more credit for what they do, Berra is a machine for us and is our only consistently good defender.

So that should make the Championship team of the season fairly predictably, at least for the front 6 (4-4-2): Murphy, Bamford; Ritchie, Arter, Leadbitter, Pritchard. I should imagine Boro's excellent defensive record will ensure Gibson and maybe Friend and Kalas get a place. Berra would be in my team, having marshalled the defence with aplomb all season. Keogh and Forsyth from Derby are possiblitities.

We haven't been exactly deserving too much praise if honest...

Murphy should have been no.1, and Berra in the top 10. Interesting that there are no Norwich players at all. Leadbitter would have done well here under McCarthy. He's a real McCarthy type of player.

Interesting to know how other fans feel but it does not sit right with me that an on loan Premiership player(Chelsea i think) should win the championship player of the year award i think it should go to a full time championship player who has put a full shift in for his team.

Pleased for Murphy - certainly not convinced by Bamford myself. As regards Leadbitter, I think it's fair to say that nobody from that reached their true potential at town. I'm struggling to think why that should be!

Bamford top is a bit unlucky for a few others. Just based on FLshow highlights and match reports, Matt Ritchie can count himself unlucky not to be higher up the list! I also agree that a few more defenders wouldn't go amiss (although bar Berra, I can't name any that have really stood out for me).

Statistically Berra is the 2nd best player in the league, don't know how much you can rely on that though - Ross McCormack is top!

I am not at all surprised Murphy is the only one.

Hardly surprising. Or did every one expect Tabb, Anderson & the other donkeys to be up there

I would have thought Murphy and Berra from us notwithstanding Tabby and now Skuse being "different class" ............
