Sears: Scoring Late Winner Was So Special
Monday, 27th Apr 2015 06:00

Freddie Sears hailed Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest as “a special game” for him after netting Town’s 83rd minute winner to take the Blues to within a whisker of the play-offs.

“It was a special game,” the striker said. “We went one up and the fans were brilliant but then we conceded a sloppy goal. To score the winner so late on was really special.

“There is a lot at stake and Forest are a good side and they got on top a bit in the second half.

“The gaffer made a couple of changes and we were able to come back and we got what we deserved in the end.”

Sears has now scored nine times since signing from Colchester for a £100,000 fee in January, adding to the 14 goals he netted for the U’s during the first half of the season.

The 25-year-old former West Ham trainee and Daryl Murphy, who has now netted 25 times this season, have quickly developed a fruitful partnership.

“Me and Murph have clicked straight away,” he added. “I realised from our first game together we have a good understanding and it has come on leaps and bounds since then.

“I’m really enjoying playing with him and I think he is enjoying it too and we are getting the goals.”

Portman Road was taking part in a minute’s applause as a tribute to 21-year-old supporter Chris Reynolds who died last week when Murphy scored the Blues’ first goal.

“I saw on Twitter about a lad passing away and they were going to have the minute’s applause,” Sears continued.

“As players you try not to focus on that but the players wish the family well and they have our condolences.

“Murph has finished the goal really well. We will take goals at any time but it was a fitting tribute to the lad and it was one for the family.”

Regarding next week’s final game of the season at Blackburn, the striker is targeting a win, although a point will be enough to ensure a place in the top six, while the Blues could even make it if they lose as long as two of the results involving Derby, Brentford and Wolves go in their favour.

“There are four teams fighting for that last play-off place,” he said. “We have one foot in the play off places but we need to get both in there.

“It will be tough at Blackburn but we need to go there and win. We are confident, our form is good and we are capable.

“If we just go there for a draw anything could happen but our best form of defence is attack.

“It is in our hands and even though we have the better goal difference [than Brentford and Wolves] we want to win and make sure we get over the line.”

As for the possibility of an East Anglian derby at some stage in the play-offs, he said: “I have just moved house and my next door neighbour is a Norwich fan so there has been a bit of banter between us.

“I played in the derby game up there and I know how much it means to people here. I have played in West Ham-Millwall derby games which are pretty intense but I know how big Ipswich-Norwich is.

“It would be great for both teams if we met in the play-offs, so I would look forward to that.

“It would be nice to shut my neighbour up. He has had the bragging rights for a while, so I would love to get one over on them.

“He has wished us well, and I wish them well but we need to get into the play-offs first.”

Overall, he says he’s thoroughly enjoying life at Portman Road: “I’m loving it here. Playing in front of 25,000 people is what I have wanted for a couple of years.

“No disrespect to Colchester, who are playing in front of 4,000-5,000, but this is what I was made for and I’m loving it. I’m totally buzzing and enjoying my football.

“The fans have taken to me so well and I love the fans here, they are great and it really means a lot to me that they have taken to me.”

Not wanting to be pedantic but think its 4 teams fighting for 2 places in the playoffs Freddie. You will merit legend status alongside Bontcho Sixto Pablo and Gio if you can get us into the playoffs and beyond. We will call you Freddo just to fit in with those heros.

I think Freddie has surpassed Gio , and if he gets us in the play offs he will def be top of the 'O's
Been a great bit of business by MM
Class is permanent !

I think we'll need the draw. Wolves are too far behind on goal difference but all three will win, (even Derby in their current form should get the draw they need), so Brentford is the key game really. They only have a three goal swing to make up.

Great signing by the way.

Nice to hear that he's approaching the next game with a positive view. The worst thing we can do is play for a draw and invite pressure on our back 4 who don't really want the ball at their feet (that's not a criticism, it's just true). Best thing we can do is hit them hard early like we did vs Wolves and then hopefully they can't be bothered!

Freddie is the SPECIAL ONE for us as without him we may have struggled to get into this position. What impresses me most is his strength on the ball with bigger defenders having little impact. Plus of course his partnership with Murph so much so we've hardly missed McG!

Just as youre a special player Freddie
Definitely made the difference, without his goals we would have blown it, and he is one of the very few we have who could make that step up in level.
We will need the point as mentioned above, as I see the others winning. If Brentford win by two and we lose by one..... they finish above us.

Promises to be a nervy day!!

We can look at it another way, un order for us to miss the playoffs we HAVE to lose and Derby HAVE to get a point and either Wolves or Brentford HAVE to win and turn around a worse goal difference. I'll bet the odds on that lot happening are pretty long. I'm not sure if that has made me feel better or not!!

In fact I always lose at gambling so it might be worth a tenner just to help us over the line!

Well done Freddie !! He has contributed several valuable points since he has been here !! with of course Daryl

Tim: all that needs to happen is for us to lose by 1 and Brentford to win by 2 against a poor side! Derby only need a point to go above us with a hugely superior goal difference. So really. It's not that much of a long shot!

I honestly don't think we'd be anywhere near the position we're in if we hadn't signed Freddie. I was fairly pleased when he signed but he's so much better than I thought he'd be. It's nice that we're not having to be so reliant on Murph as he's banging them in. It's just a shame we haven't had him all season!

I think Freddie, and consistent attacking formations, would have got us automatic promotion.

“I have just moved house and my next door neighbour is a Norwich fan". This is sloppy, there really is no excuse for not doing your research before buying a house!

I think we need to get Freddie signed up on a longer contract asap.

He's been phenomenal.

No Bergholt Blue - the best form of defence is attack. First the play-offs, then two 5-0s to the Town, then get the Norwich wearing blue and white for the final - just like Delia did in '78

@kiwiblue what about Marcus Stewart, I think Freddie has made a similar impact!

MM deserves enormous credit here. He has rejuvenated Murphy, signed Sears and got the two of them working well together.

I think Chelsea would argue that the best form of defence is defence! No-one knows how the game will unfold, Blackburn might have thier flop flops on in which case defending would be our best bet because they won't break us down without being commited. On the other hand if we boo Rhodes's name when it's announced and he get's into his team-mates and they come at us we had better score a goal or two.

I think we need to be solid and hold some threat but not be gung ho. We will play with 2 up top which is posotive anyway but I wouldn't expect too many risks being taken by the full backs or even the midfield until it's (if it even becomes so) nessasary. Surely going 2 goals behind to counter attacks (Think Patrick Bamford) after we commit 9 men to an attack would be the dummest possible way to piss it away now.

Zombie is right
Younger Blues will have forgotten Delia wearing blue and white
she was in Chrtistchurch park on the morning of the final getting all blue
Anyway, pies or no pis, Norwich can keep her
Lance Percival and Brian Cant are ours!

Fat Boy Tim mentions that Mick will go with Freddie and Murph up front which is a given;but we played so much better with a 433 formation in 2nd half against Forest who were getting on top when Manager changed it;so I would like to see Ando up there as Reg is unable to play against his parent team.
Could always change to 442 during game if not working.
Ando rarely lasts the 90 mins so somebody like Darren Ambrose could replace him later in the game.
With players coming back from injury at just the right time Mr McCarthy could also have another player or two to call upon if required.I think all the players will be up for it now and even the likes of Henshall or Hewitt would probably do ok for a few minutes but expect Mick will call on Jay Tabb who would probably been in the team on Saturday if he hadn't been ill.

Fat_Boy_Time we've got the upper hand no doubt only needing a draw and we should look at our result first but should we lose it puts us in a very dangerous position still.

We have to expect Derby will beat Reading at home...
(Therefore ruling Wolves out on a large GD margin)

Brentford would then only need to beat Wigan by two or more goals (as they have a better goals scored tally) - if we lose by a one goal margin.

(Which I'm sure people will agree Brenford are capable of).

Obviously if we lose by two or more goals, Brentford just have to secure the win at home to Wigan.

For me it's vital that Rotherham lose midweek against Reading for two reasons.

1) Wigan will still have something to play for on the final day.
2) Reading players will receive a boost for the win going into the game against Derby.

In summary...we need to draw or win otherwise it's likely we will be in trouble.

Since Xmas our away form has been abit patchy but this a one off - nervy old affair
Blackburn want to finish at home on a high so I dont expect any flip flops on show
They have dangerous men up front with 40 between them
All or nothing for us - we cant go and sit back with their strikers
We have to score and looking at them they have conceded afew in recent weeks
If Rotherham win this week then that puts more pressure on as Wigan and Millwall will be down so not much to play for them - If Rotherham lose - at least Wigan will have some motivation !

I really like Freddy Sears and not only for his goalscoring ability. He seems such a modest, unassuming player into the bargain - looks pleased when he scores, obviously, but does not indulge in childish, over-the-top celebrations; furthermore, I can't remember him diving to gain a penalty or throwing himself to the ground and writhing around as if he'd been shot after a tackle (PL prima donnas take note!) Contrast this to Grabban vs Rotherham: a little incident involving handbags, in which Grabban maybe does react by punching. Not really a very big deal and could have gone unnoticed until said Scummer then throws himself to the ground as if HE was on the receiving end. Pathetic!
