Hunt Confident of Receiving "Two or Three Offers"
Monday, 18th May 2015 23:08

Winger Stephen Hunt says he’s confident that he’ll receive a few offers over the summer but isn’t ruling out staying with the Blues, despite no contract currently being on the table.

Manager Mick McCarthy is yet to offer terms to Hunt, his brother Noel, Darren Ambrose, Paul Anderson and loanee Richard Chaplow but says he has "not closed the door on those players".

"There's a good chance, I'll be back there next year. But there's a good chance I won't be," Hunt, 33, told Irish radio station Newstalk.

"I'm confident I'll have two or three offers on the table in the next few weeks and I'll then see what's best for me and what's best for the gaffer."

Hunt has enjoyed his time at Town as part of what he calls the "most genuine, down-to-earth" squad and revealed that short shrift was given to anyone who didn’t fit in.

"We had one bad character come into the changing room last year but he was shot down straight away and none of us had any of it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Anderson has tweeted his thanks to everyone at Portman Road, as have Chaplow and departing striker Jack Marriott, who is believed to be interesting Luton.

Was it Paul Taylor?

Top guy, love his passion for the club & attitude but let's be honest at 33 by the time the season starts, his best years are behind him. We need to move on, get in younger & quality. With the manager we have and the reputation for being a nice club to be at, surely this will be a draw for any player at that level? Apparently we are also competitive with Champ wages..

For the 'original' version of Paul Anderson's third tweet above, see the following:

Let him go after his offers, because he offers Ipswich very little I'm afraid.

Incredible really to think Marriot is leaving.

Useless... No where near good enough for championship. The 45 minutes at Blackburn were the worst I've seen from a town player in years. Definitely not part of a stronger squad next season !!!

It was clear that on saturday the difference between us and Narridge was the midfield, like Ando alot but he and the others released have failed to give us the edge in top matches.
MM doing the right thing, keeping a solid defence, keeping an effective strike force and building a better midfield.
Also think Bru will be a big player for us next season

I wish him all the very best and thanks for his service. But, just like last Summer is Stephen or any of the other released players rejoin the club it will be because we failed to sign our targets. If they are that important or rated by Mick, then deals would have been agreed now. So, let's be blunt, it will be a disappointment if we see any of them again and a backwards step. We need to move forwards. It's over to Evans to back the manager and sign the preferred new options.

Not sure that bad character was paul taylor, as hunt says he came in last year.

So you are looking at signings made last season rather than taylor who was signed by jewell.

I would say its one of these two either Jordan Graham or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

But then his loan was cut short very quickly and was sent back

Yes it's no surprise it's the midfield that's being rewired this close season. Needs to be the engine room of the team and it just isn't right now.

We desperately need creative options and a go-to character to assist playing through teams not over them. These are tough, but ultimately correct choices.

Keep the faith. COYB

Not good enough now I'm afraid - had a few opportunities in the Wolves and Blackburn games when he was in space and basically put in a poor cross or was indecisive. Thanks for your efforts Stephen but we have to look to the future.

Bru will be a big player for us next year. Tabb will be a good sqaud addition. I can't see Ambrose or the Hunt brothers being offered a deal. Please keep Anderson!

I like Stephen Hunt & I'm glad we signed him. I do believe his influence on the squad was a positive factor and he was a decent player for us when fit. While I disagree with the tone of @prebbs post above, I have to acknowledge that Hunty was awful in that Blackburn game. I don't accept that it was representative of his time with us though, & would suggest that he just wasn't (match) fit for that game.
Having said all that, I think Mick is right not to offer him a new deal. Being 33 is not reason enough in itself, but when you have had a number of injuries and turn 33, chances are that any remaining seasons left in the game, certainly at Championship level, will be blighted by periods out working with the Physio. The fact that Mick is able to take that decision so quickly, when he clearly has huge respect for Hunty, can only be good for the club & our prospects next season. I'd expect to see an annoucement soon that we have signed a younger, injury free version to replace him.
I wish Stephen Hunt well and hope he gets a contract with a decent club.

Incredible that Marriot has stayed as long as he has. Good Conference player - that's all. Hunt tries, but his best years are well behind him. Go for Jamie Murphy at Sheff Utd. Now, he's exciting.

"We had one bad character come into the changing room last year..."

Who is he talking about, you think? Or am I missing the obvious?

Hunty must be well set up as has recently moved house to midlands and bought a pub/club/restaurant in Eire, plus taking his badges in exactly a months time means he is looking to the future.Hope he gets fixed up as he thinks he might(presumably at a lower level)and keeps the money coming in to keep his wife and two kids.
Also think from interview, he could do media work, and note that he regularly writes for paper in Ireland.

I'm guessing that bad character was Cameron Stewart

Well said Len Brennan. I agree with all that. I too was at Blackburn and he was truly dreadful but I remember too more positive contributions and in particular him going nuts when we scored in that great 3-2 away win at Blackpool when MM first took over. Great character, great , infectious commitment. So who's gonna criticise that in this cynical kiss the badge era?! That said I too agree that to re-sign the likes of the hunt boys, ando etc is a sign of failure to move on. More pace and guile in midfield is the overriding priority. I like the way the club has acted decisively post Saturday (Tabb reservations aside) and feel confident that they have identified the right areas for improvement. We should all provide them with a bit of space and trust to go about their work rather than leaping upon every micro decision or bit of gossip.

I hope Ambrose is given a contract, genuine skill and shooting ability and Ipswich through and through

I would love to see the Hunt brothers stay if it was a cheap option, because they're great characters to have in our club, the first to celebrate the first to issue to rallying cry...

However, saying that I would not want to see them over the expensive of a potential new signing in their prime!

Really enjoyed the interview and the positive comments he, and the Newstalk Off the Ball team, made about the club. Really at best he can only be a squad player and I think the less he plays the less likely he will be able to make a positive impact when he does come on. Wish him all the best. I would like Paul Anderson to stay on.
