Strikers Start as Ireland and England Draw
Sunday, 7th Jun 2015 15:30

Blues strike pair Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick both started for the Republic of Ireland as they drew 0-0 with England in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin this afternoon.

McGoldrick was replaced at half-time by Southampton’s Shane Long, while Murphy, who came closest to scoring when he headed a Robbie Brady freekick wide, made way for ex-Blues skipper Jon Walters on 56.

Murphy has now won 15 full caps and McGoldrick two with both still to score an international goal.

The game was a warm-up for next Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Christophe Berra’s Scotland, also at the Aviva Stadium.

On Thursday Murphy and McGoldrick both played the first half of a behind-closed-doors training game against Northern Ireland which also ended 0-0.

That's 90 minutes of my life I'll never get back but it was nice to see two of our boys playing against tough opposition and they didn't look too out of their depth. Murphy would've had a couple of goals on another day and McGoldrick looked lively until he started to blow out.

Boring game but considering Didz has just come back to fitness and they were playing against a solid defence I think they did really well.

Murphy won't get too many better chances to score. Okay, Hart saved the first but it should have been a goal, whilst his header was very poor. Mcgoldrick looked way off the pace to me. That said it was only a friendly and Murphy did give us a hard time at the back.

I'd agree with Jas. Murph did ok but will be disappointed given the season he had as a goalscorer. Didz played like a man who has not had much football in the last 6 months, & with his style, can look a bit unmotivated at times.
As for the 2 lads that have been linked to us in recent months; we didn't see enough of McShane really but McClean looks like he'd be ideal on the left wing. A real McCarthy type player, hard working, tracking back to cover the left back, but a real attacking option also. Much better than Hunt, Tabb or Henshall (& probably Stewart had he played) have been for us.
Wigan will sell him & look for a serious enough fee, but he would certainly be worth £1.5m/£2m and is young enough to get a good sell on if we didn't get promoted. His wages may be problem after their time in the Prem of course. If there is truth in the reports of ME being prepared to spend if the right players are available, this is one that should be considered.

At least the Tennis made up for the most boring international ever. I did become interested in McShane, I am warming up to the idea of us possibly signing him, but I see him going to Reading over anywhere else.

I am glad Didz got subbed as the poor fella has had 2 season killing injuries in 2 years and worry about his ability to stay fit.

See you in Germany :)

I can definitely think of one. You know... THE one (vs. Brentford)

Nice picture of Phil Jones taking a handful of Murphy's shirt on the BBC website:

Agree - it was great to see two Town Players leading the line in an International !! Dids is still getting his match fitness and I think Murph needs a rest - mush as I love it we have internationals , he did look jaded towards the end of the season and in the play offs .
Be great to see him vs Berra though ! - I was rooting for then to score but in hindsight maybe best they keep a low profile to ward off too many suitors
Well done boys -

Murphy was lively and had a good game, was a general threat.
McG is clearly going to be "off-the-pace" after his time out Jas, saying that he got a good 45 minutes under his belt against tough opposition and looked neat and tidy on the ball.

Thought they played their part in helping England keep a clean sheet.

Murph had more chances against England than he did against Norwich! Great to see our lads out there but very very poor from England.

That being said, must be hard to get the motivation when most of your mates are on the beach!
