Town Issue High Court Writ Against Suffolk Police
Wednesday, 24th Jun 2015 15:38

Town have issued a High Court writ against Suffolk Constabulary seeking £511,869 it claims it was illegally billed for policing outside Portman Road at home games between 2008 and 2013.

In 2012 the High Court ruled that West Yorkshire Police had overcharged Leeds United for "special police services" between 2009 and 2012, the Whites having argued that policing the roads and car parks around Elland Road is not their responsibility.

As a result of that ruling, Town are understood to be amongst a number of clubs taking similar action to reclaim cash previously paid - plus interest - for policing around stadia on matchdays. The Blues were charged from £5,926 to £25,242 per fixture.

A club spokesman told TWTD: “The matter is with both respective legal advisors and the club has no further comment to make at this time.”

A police statement reads: “We are aware of the writ but as this is subject to ongoing legal proceedings it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

JimmyJazz I thought some of the comments on this site were puerile but you take it to a whole new level, next time you need help don't phone the police ask a crack head for help

Claim form. It's a claim form, plain, simple and boring. It's not a writ.

well the first thing suffolk constabulary should do is withdraw all non paid for police men.WHY should us tax payers fork out so a lot of people can take home loads of money.
Sort of worse than benefit cheats really.

It says "overcharged" not just "charged", so I assume this means we expect to have to pay the police, but they've been charging us something like £500 per policeman per hour - instead of a little over his/her wage

The allegation is overcharging because it has become clear following the decision in Leeds' case that the club's responsibility to pay only extend to policing in certain areas. The club is therefore seeking a rebate of the money it paid in respect of policing certain areas outside the ground itself.

I think this is just a formality - I'm sure an agreement will be in place where the police and ITFC will renegotiate the rates.

Have we strengthen our first team squad yet ,or are we bringing back the hunts and anderson ,are we going to get a right back 2 wingers and a creative centre mid. Pre season starts next week ,so time to blend them into our squad will pass. We all know whats needed but where are our signings. Derby clearly going for it. Not that it will guarantee success ,but come on Mick get at it with Marcus and give the team whats needed.

The High Court ruling will see many clubs claiming back money from Police Forces where the budgets are already drastically reduced by this idiotic government.
This decision will help nobody and has nothing to do with 'bent coppers' which is a bit like labeling all football fans 'hooligans'.

bobwya , there is nowhere else to make such a statement as the news flow from our club is zero. I appreciate that we are in close season ,but next week we won't be. Our top 6 rivals are all strengthening in the main and we are as usual blunt. I saw 42 games last season ,if they do nothing to excite me then this season it will be 4. So I'm simply expressing my feelings that we are are benign in our dealings when in reality we need 5 players of substance.

.......... oh well - minimum Police cover in the future then - for sure.

Perhaps it's best Norwich are not visiting us next season after all. This will undoubtedly mean more Stewards outside the ground,'some' of whom will be nothing more than jobsworths, overcome with power.

bluefeast ........... but what did you expect ? ..... I predicted exactly this, and 'as yet' haven't been proved wrong.

The liaison between Club and Supporters is certainly not good - this is the time to be creating enthusiasm for the coming season amongst potential, and current, supporters.

It's entirely flat - at the moment. Let's have a bit of news coming from Portman Road next week PLEASE.

But, as I've said previously - we have become a Club that a hard core of support expect VERY LITTLE from.

The club should be spending their time and money on signing quality players. I can see the headlines now 'Town confirm wages money spent on legal fees'. This in a week where older fans were written to demanding they provide proof of age for concessions tickets. Despite many doing so when they turned 60. 14 years on my dad is being asked to prove his age AGAIN. Yet another bad PR week from ITFC.

"illegally billed", we should call the police!

A disappointing story. As an ITFC season ticket holder and tax payer to Suffolk Constabulary, this is lose lose. I do not want my money going on solicitors and legal bills. What a shame it could not be sorted out.
