McCarthy: Mings Deal Good for All Parties
Tuesday, 30th Jun 2015 13:59

Town boss Mick McCarthy says the deal which saw left-back Tyrone Mings move to Bournemouth and Cherries pair Ryan Fraser and Brett Pitman join the Blues last week is good for all parties.

Mings, 22, moved for an initial fee of £8 million rising to £10 million after top-ups, while there is also a sell-on clause. Winger Fraser, 21, joined Town on a season-long loan, while the Blues signed Pitman, 27, on a free transfer.

“It’s a symbiotic deal, it’s mutually beneficial for all parties, I think,” McCarthy said. “We’ve done great out of it in terms of the money that will help us rebuild.

“We’ve taken two really good players, Brett Pitman and Ryan Fraser, that will make us a stronger squad.

“Yes, we’ve lost a really good left-back but we signed Jonny Parr for left-back last year and only the fact that Tyrone Mings ended up being the best left-back in the division, [to the extent that] he’s gone to Bournemouth in the Premier League, kept him out for most of the time.

“It’s brilliant, I think it’s great for him and having spent next to nothing on him and getting the money we did was a remarkable deal for a Championship left-back.

“And if he does as well as Cressy did - he won every player of the year award at West Ham - it’ll be great for him as well.

“And I think Bournemouth have got a good deal, they’ve got the most promising left-back around.”

McCarthy expects Mings to adjust to life in the Premier League quickly: “That won’t faze him at all.

“I think from minute one walking in here he was never fazed by that and that was coming from Chippenham, never having played at this level. I know he was at Southampton as a kid but he’d never played at Championship level.

“He took it in his stride, and it’s a big old stride, let me tell you. And I think he’ll do the same with the Premier League.”

He says the player and his father Adie, a former non-league player and manager, who now scouts for Chelsea, were both pleased with the deal: “I spoke to Tyrone and his dad separately and they’re both delighted with everything that’s gone on and thanked me and TC profusely for the help that we’ve given him. Likewise, it was a good deal for both of us because he’s been great.

“I’m delighted for him because he deserves to play in the Premier League. It would have been lovely if he was with us but of course, he’s not, so good luck to him.

“But we’ve got two players in as well and we’ll have a few quid that we might be able to spend elsewhere as well.”

McCarthy said that while the likes of Arsenal kept tabs on Mings throughout last season, none of the big clubs made an approach: “All the top clubs are watching all the teams when there’s a player, a good player at a club. They’ll all send their scouts to watch them.

“We had them here all last season. We didn’t get any direct interest in him from any of them, prior to this.

“I actually enquired about the lads at Bournemouth and I think that started the ball rolling really.

“They never thought that Tyrone would be for sale, and he wasn’t for sale. But then everybody’s got his price, especially when we can do other things with the money and get two players in, and that’s just what happened.”

Yep, 100% agree with that analyis, and nice to hear everyone is so happy with the deal. I'm so pleased there is a sell-on clauses as well. Reckon that will make us another couple of million in next 2-3 years.

Will be cheering hard for both Town and Tyrone next year.

Surely pound for pound the best deal the club has ever done in terms of the fee and the two players coming in. Mings hadn't been at the club since he was a nipper either so minimal outlay in terms of getting him through the system.

"Symbiotic"? Feck me, has MM been playing Scrabble on his summer hols?

I think we should have kept him for another season, the skys the limit with the lad and he'd only played 40 games. It would have been superb to see him develop for another year and hopefully stay with us after a promotion season.

We're certainly a weaker team as things stand - looking forward to seeing who Mick brings in.

Best news I have heard all summer is that Mick sounds like he will play Parr as a full back.

Just need that RB position sorting at the back now.

He will be missed but not as much as people think. He is still young and has ALOT of learning to do. If we can find and keep that solid back 4 we can go again and push for promotion.

I'd say that we will be slightly stronger defensively, with Parr in at left back. But we will miss his marauding runs forward if we DON'T bring in a proper right back to balance the equation.

Totally agree about the Full Backs.
Sorry, however, totally disagree that selling our talented young players is the right way, the Ipswich way, for any price.

Not disagreeing about the RB situation, but MM was slating fans for complaining about 'Chambo' at RB last year. I have never heard him talk about RB being a priority, so if we get one, it will be a similar situation to the Mings deal, ie out of the blue, I think. Doubt it will happen, and that sucks.

The biggest loss for me with Mings will be his service into the box. I don't see Parr coming close to his ability to whip in crosses out of nowhere, and I think Ty's going to start scoring loads of goals too, judging from the 1 or 2 times he tried to score last season. That said wasn't Parr originally a striker? I can't wait to see how good he is after a run of games.

Did anyone say that it's the Ipswich way to sell young players? It's about staying afloat and doing what's best for Ipswich Town Football Club, not what's best for one or two young players, or a few locals that remember the old days when you could buy a good left back for 1d. Why wouldn't we sell a young player if it means we're better off for it?

Good words again from Mick. Agreed! Sounds like money will be spent.

An absolutely top rate deal for the club and even more encouraging to hear that it was us who got the ball rolling by enquiring about Pitman and Fraser, Mick clearly rates those two and wanted them.

I agree with what others have said, that Parr will make us more solid defensively, but that we will miss Mings going forward. No Anderson this season either, who was the best we had for crosses and corners by a country mile. Mick has to find the players who will service our forwards, otherwise we will struggle, no matter how good our forward line is.

There are 30,000 seats in our stadium for good reason, that we have the fan base to fill them 23 times a season. The only way you're going to do that if you're Ipswich, is by running the club well, hiring a good manager, and getting a lot of the world class players for little or no money and hanging onto them. That is the Ipswich way. I know the Premier League brings riches beyond the imagination of Sir Alf and Sir Bobby when he was our manager, but we are still going to have to rely on talent spotting and shrewd bargain deals. Selling Tyrone was a step back along that long path that, I accept, the club has gone a fair way along over the past two seasons.

Perhaps the second best deal behind Bobby Robson managing to get us £ 4.5 million of Newcastle's money for Titus Bramble!

How can we be weaker with two excellent additions in Pitman and Fraser and Parr at last at left back? Especially with the Arsenal lad in too - expect to see much more flair from Town next season. McG's return will help too

We're about to find out who was right, the majority of Premier League clubs, or Bournemouth who didn't think Tyrone was for sale. Apparently, he wasn't for sale! I can understand that he has the game for the Prem, but I just question the readiness of the player, and now seriously doubt our club's ambition. The only way that sale makes sense is if another gem or two can be unearthed to add to our academy players coming through the system - and if that can be achieved then it could have been achieved without the sale of Tyrone.

@rfretwell

I guess it boils down to whether you think Parr is as good as Mings, which I don't. And neither does Mick judging by his "best leftback in the Championship" comment.

Selling 'the best left back in the division' surely makes us weaker?

Parr also played his best & our best football, at Right-Back, when we went 4-3-3 with Ty & himself bombing forward from full-back. Anyone disagree?

I, like many, agree that Mings has the potential to go on to be a future international and believe that given the lad had only played one season, to get the amount we did has to be seen as a good deal.
As for people's opinion on Parr, I disagree with the view that we are weaker with him in the side. I think everyone forgets that he was Palace's player of the year when they got promoted playing at lb.
I also think it sounds like we will be playing with out and out wingers this season, meaning having slightly more defensive full backs is sensible. Last season, with no real width, we needed that attacking intent from our full backs.

Totally right it was a good deal for all parties.
Mings isn't the finished article by a long way and there's no guarantee he ever will be - good prospect that he is.
£8-10million is comfortably acceptable.
Yes, we will miss him but not for the comment about his ability to whip in a cross. We miss Cresswell far more for that.
We'll miss Mings for his maurauding runs, height and athleticism but not his distribution or lapses I concentration as Bournemouth will find out.
If we've got it wrong, we have a sell-on clause.
But I suspect we haven't. And, as I've said before, left-backs don't win you promotion like strikers, wingers and midfielders do.
