Boro Full-Back Linked as Part of Murphy Bid
Wednesday, 1st Jul 2015 20:35

Middlesbrough are reportedly offering the Blues left-back James Husband in a cash-plus-player move for Town striker Daryl Murphy.

Earlier today, reports in Ireland claimed the Blues had rejected a £4.5 million offer from Boro for the 32-year-old, the subject of much speculation since netting 27 Championship goals last season.

TWTD understands that Town rebuffed an offer for the Irish international a fortnight ago but the Teessiders appear keen to continue their pursuit.

According to HITC Sport, Boro are now offering Husband as part of a deal reportedly worth in excess of £4 million.

Husband, 21, joined Boro from Doncaster for a fee of £500,000 last summer with Curtis Main moving in the opposite direction, but was unable to establish himself in the team at the Riverside.

The Leeds-born full-back made just five starts - only two in the league - and one sub appearance before joining Fulham on loan loan in March, playing five games.

Town are said to have already been considering Husband as a potential replacement for Tyrone Mings, who joined AFC Bournemouth in an £8 million deal last week.

While Jonny Parr’s preferred position is left-back and manager Mick McCarthy has challenged the Norwegian to make the position his own, it’s likely that the Blues boss will want to sign another left-sided full-back before the start of the season.

Speaking yesterday, McCarthy reiterated his intention to keep Murphy at Portman Road: “We don’t want to sell Daryl Murphy, we don’t want to lose Daryl Murphy.

“He’s still on a break because he’s only had a couple of weeks [off since being away with Ireland]. That’s what I’ll be telling him, and his agent - we want to keep him.

“He was the outstanding striker in this league last season and it would be difficult to fill his boots. We’re going to try and keep him.”

Murphy, who previously played in the North-East with Sunderland, has said on a number of occasions he that he has no intention of leaving Town as he and his family are settled in Suffolk.

The Waterford-born frontman signed a new contract with Town last July, which has another year left to run with the Blues having an option to extend it for a further season.

Jog on Boro !! What can Boro offer that we can't ?? Nothing appealing about Middlesborough what so ever . I still think he will see out his career at Ipswich , seems like he has been here forever

The players and the money offered in return are irrelevant - selling the division's top goalscorer to a rival Championship team is simply not in our interests.

The thing is, if we sell Murphy we need to replace him. Despite raking in £8M for Mings you get the impression that Evans doesn't want to spend on fees. If we sell, then to get a decent replacement you would be looking to spend £2-3M for a goal scorer. If Evans only intends to stick with frees and loans, then there is absolutely no point in selling Murphy, whatever the price. Yes, Murphy was a free, but will we get that lucky again? Pitman is a good signing, but we need four strikers of the same calibre that we already have.

Husband would be a very poor signing.

The only thing it'll come down to at the end of the day is money sadly.

If I was settled in ipswich then there's no way i'd want to uproot and go to the back of beyond in Middlesbrough...other than for silly money.

Hopefully some of the Mings cash can go towards giving Murphs a better deal here.

And we don't want your rejects Boro either.

although I don't want to lose murphy looking to the future its a matter of can we get a player to replace him yes as I can see la fondre going for a couple of million with a spare LB and as a reject that's a bit unfair he is a good player not easy to dislodge George friend but if we want we can play our hand and say make it 5 mill and husband it must be a no brainer.

hindsight is a wonderful thing would didsy be worth the massive fee we turned down at the time I don't thing so if it was offered now would we take it I think yes we might be saying the same think about this in 12 months time in the same position, we might get promoted with him but could also get injured after first game that's the gamble that must be made I will bk MM whatever he decides.

So, Rambohambo, it appears you want a friend but not a husband...

Is it the commitment that puts you off?

In MM We trust... It Murphy's agent i dont trust and if he is a greedy B****** and pushes hard enough for the deal, just for his own benefit then we might lose him as sometimes money talks to loud but still I will trust MM to move this ship forward and lead us to the promise land, with Murphy or without...

I prefer with.... COYB!!!

why would MM want a LB that can't make it into Borough's team. The conudram with Murphs is that after this season his value will fall. We could exyend but what is the lkelihood that he'll score mor ethan 20 goals.

well he was loan at Fulham last season which is why he wasn't in the team.

Looks like there is a chance that Town could lose out unless they've got a VERY good replacement lined up for Murph. £4.5M + a player exchange = a good deal, but I wouldn't want to lose a player who scored nearly 30 goals last season. Town need a left back as I don't rate Parr enough to be first choice, for me Parr is more of a left sided midfield player who can get forward, really not certain on the outcome of this one...???

Matt Clarke should be pushing for the Left Back berth. We don't want a full back who can't get in the Middlesbrough side and I don't believe that we should risk letting Murphy go to the Championship anyway.

This is a difficult one re the sale of Murphy. Going back and in hindsight if we did get an offer for McGoldrick in the region of £8 million the season before last we should have taken it, as soon after the bid he got injured and hardly figured at all in the remainder of the season. Sadly he hardly figured last season and no way would we get anything near £8m now. On the plus side however we still have a class player. Not saying we should have sold McGoldrick but we are now in the same scenario with Murphy. Will he get another 20 goals plus next season - I don't think so but can we afford to lose him - I don't envy the Club in making a decision on this one. In any event why do we want another left back who has had little playing time in our division. Get a right back please.
