Wordsworth Signs for Southend
Friday, 3rd Jul 2015 16:27

Released midfielder Anthony Wordsworth has joined League One Southend United on a two-year deal. The 26-year-old officially left the Blues at the end of the season but spent most of the last campaign on loan at Rotherham and then Crawley.

Wordsworth told the official Shrimpers website: “I met [manager] Phil [Brown] about three weeks back and I decided straight away that I wanted to play for him. I spoke to some of the boys I already know here and they spoke really highly of the Club.

“I know some of the other lads as well and I'm looking forward to starting here. It always helps knowing players here and I've watched a few Southend games because of those players.

“I have family that live in Southend and they come to all the games. I'll have to set some targets in pre-season and try and achieve those goals.”

Wordsworth joined the Blues for a fee of £100,000 in January 2013 and made 10 starts and 10 sub appearances, scoring two goals.

Shame he never made that step up with us. Still, good luck to the fella.

A good move for him. I quite liked Wordsworth and personally think he offered more than Ambrose, but granted he wasn't ultimately good enough.

don't think he was a bad player, and never really got a run in the team which is a shame. good luck to the lad!

Jas0999, in what way do you think he offered more than ambrose? IMO when Ambrose played he looked decent trouble was he was never fit enough to play.

Does anyone really care. I don't. Had the potential to do well for us but had the wrong attitude

Good in the air but otherwise league 1 is his level

Yes I care floridaboy, thought he was a decent enough player, and I wish him all the best at Southend. Just because he didn,t fit in here doesn.t mean he had an attitude problem. Agree with you Bossman, I think he,ll do well in League 1.

We still have too many average players that need to improve, and never think they've made it in football.. with that we have a team....

When he signed I thought that we had bought a quality player at a bargain price. Sadly, for whatever reason, it hasn't worked out here and he has moved on. Good luck to him.

I thought he looked a decent player when he joined, but for whatever reason he went out of the door just like Paul Taylor so on that basis why are we being given news on people who are not here any more!!??

Jas0999, wtf are you on about?

Ambrose has played to a high standard in the PL & when he is on the ball you can see he has that calm assurance.

Wordsworth is League One at best, with no pace whatsoever.

I hope Ambrose is fit, stays fit & Mick signs him. He has goals in him.

I liked Wordsworth, he offered a different option to our midfield in terms of aerial ability, the desire to want to get a goal and tackling. He just seemed to lack something else and with a couple of injuries and the wrong type of players around he seemed never to break into the side regularly.

I liked Wordsworth. Shame to see him go since he was the first player I saw score a goal at PR

........ anyone who knows a player when they see one knows Wordsworth is undoubtedly a good player - never had a chance to become established here, always capable of thinking ahead of players around him - and maybe always looking to create a bit more from midfield than MM would have liked ....... !!

Another decent player leaves us - whilst lesser players will be in this seasons squad - at the moment it looks that way anyway.

So good in fact that Southend have snapped him up.

Saw him at Crawley, and he stood out like a sore thumb in their midfield. Will do well at Southend.

It's that awful haircut that held him back.

woody is a good footballer, but probably in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He had opportunities at Rotherham but struggled to establish himself as
a first team regular there. At times his style looks a little lazy and perhaps he is being judged as a half a yard off the pace. Hopefully a step backwards will help him re-establish his game and develop
that "presence" during a game that will allow him to deliver what some will see as
outstanding performances rather than just the average to good ones that we have witnessed.
Ironically he is one of the few central midfielders we have had recently who has goals in his locker.
