Town Linked With Move for Birmingham Striker
Friday, 10th Jul 2015 09:04

Town are being linked with a move for Birmingham City striker Clayton Donaldson.

According to The Sun, the Blues are set to offer £1.2 million for the 31-year-old frontman. Later reports elsewhere claim the Blues have already made an offer ultimately worth up to £2 million.

Donaldson, who is contracted to Birmingham for another year, was recently targeted by Reading, who had a number of offers turned down, the last reported to total more than £1 million after add-ons.

Bradford-born Donaldson played youth football with his hometown club before moving on to Hull City. While with the Tigers he spent time on loan with Harrogate (twice), Scarborough and Halifax.

Having made only five sub appearances for Hull the 6ft 1in tall striker moved on to York City in 2005 before spells with Hibernian, Crewe and Brentford prior to joining Birmingham in the summer of 2014.

Last season Donaldson scored 16 goals in 46 starts and two sub appearances for the St Andrew’s club.

Town making a move for another senior striker would appear unlikely as things stand with four currently on the books.

However, with both Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick the subject of interest from elsewhere, Donaldson may well be viewed as a potential replacement if one of them were to move on.

Speaking after the Reading interest, Birmingham manager Gary Rowett admitted that everyone is for sale at the right price but that he wants to keep hold of Donaldson.

“Every player has a price tag,” he said. “I think we are all aware of that. Clayton is 31 - but if we were to lose one of our better players then we would have to replace him and there’s always a value to that.

“If you look at the Clayton situation, regardless of any interest shown, we have not solicited any bids, we have not enticed any bids. He is a player we don’t want to sell.

“It’s just speculation, I fully expect and want Clayton to be our player next year, he is an integral part of what we are doing.”

Well if we sell one we need one. This guy did really well for a team that struggled. However if we are to spend money i suspect Evans wants future value ,so a younger player would be more likely.

Totally agree bluefeast if we're going to spend 1.2m id rather it was on someone younger who we'll get long term value from. I cant see this signing happening

I would imagine Donaldson would be viewed as a McGoldrick like replacement - and based on him scoring 15 in a very poor Birmingham side, I'd have to fancy him netting more for us over the course of the season. Yes please!

If Murphy leave I would suggest to sign Donaldson and Billy sharp(Golden age with strong and good exprience in this level) in also,Sharp was available to go out for around half million only, maybe some people does't like him to refused to join us two times before, but for me I don't care and I trust MM can make him in different .

" 1.2mill for a 31 year old journeyman ...... really? "

Well researched comments, has at various levels scored at least 10 in his past 6 seasons, 24 once, and 29 once.

Age seems irrelevant for Murphy, so why should we judge Donaldson like this?

We absolutely robbed Bournemouth blind on Mings for a start, and based on what he's consistently done Donaldson would be a very good signing for us.

I don't know for sure Currie10, but wasn't ThatMuhrenCross saying that tongue in cheek? That's the way I read it anyway.

Would be a bad move. Never even heard of him to be honest and he hasn't got a great goal scoring recorded lets be honest!! If we sell Murphy or mcgoldrick we should be looking at proven goal scorers. Billy sharpe would be a good signing. He turned us down last time because he didn't think he would get first team football behing Murphy mcgoldrick Sears Barney wood hunt ect and I can see why. Leven Doyle he wouldn't be a bad shout? Zamora is available on a free as much as I hate him?? We need to keep sears for because I think he could well be too scorer in the league this season!! Come on ipswich!!!

Isn't that exactly the sort of thing we'd be wanting to hear Mick saying about Murphy? A bit more definitive than the "We hope we can keep him..." comments that we've heard reported.

Bradford, Hull, Harrowgate (twice), Scarborough, Halifax, York, Hibs, Brentford, Crewe and Birmingham ...... yes Currie10, a journeyman who has played mostly at lower levels. For me definitely not a 1.2mill player.

Donaldson is younger than Murphy and Birmingham will want more than 1.2 million for him.

He's a quality player and would fit right into our first team. Like the Murphy rumour though, it's unlikely to be true.

The only reason we would be looking at Donaldson was if we were selling Murphy part-exchange to them, and that's highly unlikely.

We seem to be linked with every position but a right back.

If we sold Murphy or mcgoldrick we would need someone with experience at this level.

Simple question.
Would he improve our squad?
I don't think I've ever seen him play, if I have he didn't stand out, so I'm not making that judgement.
I would hope we would buy someone who is likely to keep improving for a year or two though. Unless of course he got us up, then he could be discarded if he wasn't up to the Premiership.

Really can't see this will happen as if we are to replace one of our strikers we need to aim higher than Donaldson. He can be a pain in the backside but for me he is a frustrating player. Great when on song awful when not appearing to be interested. Would rather we keep what we have but money talks I'm afraid.
