McCarthy Admits Transfer Frustrations
Tuesday, 28th Jul 2015 23:09

Boss Mick McCarthy says the Blues’ lack of new additions isn’t down a lack of trying. The Town manager says he’s tried to do deals but so far without landing his targets.

Asked whether he expects to have any new signings in before Saturday’s friendly at home to Utrecht, he said: “Possibly we’re still trying, but unfortunately it’s not happening at the minute.

“We keep looking and keep spinning plates and something will drop I’m sure at some stage.”

He says bids have been rejected in some cases: “Yes, we just can’t get them done.

"Not because we’re not trying to do them or get them in, everybody should understand that. We are trying to do deals and it’s just not happening at the moment.”

The Town boss, who said last week he is looking for two or three further signings, added: “We are trying to do things and trying to make sure they’re the right things and that’s not always easy.”

He says having recently received a big fee, as the Blues did for Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth, isn’t always helpful to a buying club: “I think that’s part of it, they see we’ve suddenly got £8 million in, but we’ll still be adhering to Financial Fair Play and within the rules. If they’re the right deals, Marcus will do them, no question about that.”

Meanwhile, he says he’d like to send some of his other young players out on loan with 18-year-old defender Matt Clarke set to join Portsmouth: “Perhaps, if somebody wants them.

“If we can get them out playing for league clubs, it’ll be better than playing in the U21s. Clarkey will go and maybe somebody else.”

Hmm i wonder who and why they are saying no ,or perhaps our targets have chosen other clubs ,loads of championship clubs have signed players this week and last. So thats a possible. And our valuation of the players is not to the parent clubs liking. Also good free transfers have a whole load of clubs they can pick from ,so highest bidder etc.

Our defence was the first thing that MM strengthened when he arrived. However, I now have a sneaking suspicion that we will score plenty this season but, as it stands, leak plenty too.

Rightly or wrongly, I just don't have that same level of confidence (in our back four). Still need that right back and a decent left back for cover at the very least.

Completely off topic, but any ideas when the new squad numbers will be announced?

A combination of factors, including the Mings money not helping! We'd have been better off keeping him and developing him here. Would not be the same - if any - dire need to sign new defenders. Creative midfielders who score regularly and a quality goalkeeper who wouldn't look out of place in the Premier League? They do tend to cost money though unless a diamond can be unearthed from trialists or non league, or loans. Some of those ships have already sailed for us.

Yes Mick we all know it's difficult to get the right deals over the line but almost every other team in the league has managed it. Get it done and asap. If we enter the start of the season with the numbers and quality we have we will struggle. A proper RB. Cover (at least) at LB. Joniesta. Cover for Skuse. Possibly new keeper ( a lot of good ones have moved to championship clubs in pre season).... Let's be honest. We are drastically down on numbers from the same stage last year. We appreciate you're trying Mick but time is running out and all our rivals have strengthened and the fans will not accept for ever "we're trying but it's not quite happening"

Well now you've told him which areas need strengthening Prebbs, it'll be a doddle.

That's all it needed; a bit of guidance.

Thank God you were here.

Funny jeera NOT !!!! It's an opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs.

You may be happy with our squad but why do other clubs get new additions and seemingly flaunt FFP but we hide behind it.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't see this squad achieving automatic promotion and if we are talking about improving on last year that should be our aim. Others strengthened in January we didn't. Others have strengthened in the summer we have up front but are hugely lacking at the back.

Queue another un witty response from jeera

I think this means we are putting offers in but are getting turned down as our targets go elsewhere for more money. Unless this changes we will end up with no one - just saying

Here is the thing. We have had months to get deals done. Since May in fact. The other problem is other clubs have been able to do deals and lots of them. My immediate concern is the comment about FFP. No one else cares. It's about time Evans realised that or we will get left behind. Remember Milne saying we would be 'competitive in the transfer market'. Sadly, We seem to be looking at the lower end of the market again. The likes of Coke simply are no better than we already have. We should be able to do much better, regardless of what Mick says. Most can see our squad lacks the necessary depth and actually a couple of key players. The club are doing their usually spin trick of reassuring the fans, but we will see. Currently this squad isn't anywhere near ready for a promotion challenge. In my opinion.

This whole FFP fantasy should just be scrapped altogether really. Clubs like us complying with FFP seems absolutely pointless when you look around and see what the likes of Boro, Brentford & Derby are doing. Forest and Leeds were scarcely penalised for their spending spree last year too and until the football league takes serious action on it, other clubs will continue to ignore it. It defeats the logic of the entire rule, because the clubs like us that try to comply can only be left behind by clubs who sign our transfer targets by spending wrecklessly above FFP.

Mick has worked wonders with one hand tied behind his back. We adhere to sensible finances, when our rivals don't. I seem to be the only one on here who thought it wouldn't do us much good selling one of our assets that was unearthed for only £10K because it puts us back to square one without any guarantee even of like for like replacements, let alone using the money to assemble a promotion squad. Pitman might have cost a fee without Mings in exchange, but Mick was making the enquiry without him being for sale. Now we've got the Mings money (or most of it) then Marcus Evans needs to realise that Mick has tried to make deals with all of the constraints from before, and he needs to loosen them, otherwise we go into a vital season weakened. They know he's got the millions, we entered this mug's game by selling Tyrone, so now we need to play it, I'm afraid.

parhamblue added 08:28 - Jul 29
I don't necessarily think we have to abandon FFP, frustrating though it is to see it flouted. Some of the constraints, maybe wages which are not part of FFP, are self-imposed by the Club. Like it or not they have entered the big money game so now they have to play in order to get their targets over the line and playing for Town. It will increase the demands of the players already here for sure, but if you live by the sword ...

Anyone else read these comments and die a little inside.

"Everyone else is spending and we're not"

"Evans is hiding behind FFP"

Pull your a***s out of your bottoms guys. Evans isn't a billionaire, he's not going to continue to throw tens of millions at the club just because the fans want to.

How do you make a small fortune in football? Start off with a big fortune.

And yet fans continually moan about ticket prices etc. So it's okay for Evans to 'stick his hand in his pocket' but not us.

God some people irritate me.

Don't think there's any need to question wether we are going to spend the money now I'm sure mick will get the players in he wants eventually no need to panic here

@dirtyboy
Evans will make his money when we get into the Premier League. Frankly, it's the best thing the Club could do with the money, because as before in Burley's second promoted season, it'll ruin us otherwise.

" Jonny Williams GK (If we find a good) "

And where on earth are we going to play Williams with Bru/Bishop/McGoldrick/Niles and Fraser in the squad? Time to move on.....

karls_dad added 10:24 - Jul 29
Yep Jonny Williams, if there is the slightest possibility that he should become available, we know MM will move heaven and earth to bring him to Portman rd, Boro are targetting him, and well i think if he had a choice he would certainly wear Blue!
I still expect Jonny to be here before Brentford! its just gonna happen!!

"The Town manager says he's tried to do deals but so far without landing his targets"
That's the bit that has disappointed me, because:
- We made the playoffs last season and should be seen as contenders
- We have a manager who is higlhy regarded by most in the game
- We have the Mings money
- According to the club we are very competitive salary wise in this league
- The club has a great history, making it appealling to many (players dads maybe!)
- Need I mention the training facilities

Mick normally gets his work done quietly but qucikly when it comes to full signings. I expect us to bring in a couple of loans from Premiershhip clubs after the season kicks off, but his signings should finalised by now I would have thought. We need a right back and a central midfielder urgently and as these have been long term problem areas, we need to sign permanent solutions rather than depend on loans or out of position make-dos while just kicking the problem down the road.
Who knows (MIck I guess) what the reasons are for these targets not doing deals with the club; maybe Mick is being very ambitious and trying to get them to accept wages in line with the club's structure?
I just want us to be ready for Brentford and not start off the season still waiting on players to make up their minds and meanwhile we've dropping points, points that we'll come to regret big time come next April/May.

runningout added 10:47 - Jul 29
Williams has fitness issues, that wouldn't want us to pay over the odds for... If we have targets that we want, surely rejections are expected, then if second offer not met you go to plan b and c, which concerns me ITFC never has....
