Work Permit Issue Scuppers Austin's Wednesday Move
Wednesday, 29th Jul 2015 11:17

Reported Town target Rodolph Austin has seen a move to Sheffield Wednesday scuppered after the FA refused to give the Jamaica international a work permit.

The Blues have been linked with Austin on a number of occasions since February, while Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest were amongst a number of other Championship clubs believed to be chasing the 30-year-old, who skippered the Reggae Boyz in Sunday’s Gold Cup final which they lost 3-1 to Mexico, following his release by Leeds in May.

Wednesday are reported to have offered the midfielder a deal but the move has broken down due to the FA tightening the rules relating to foreign players’ work permits.

Austin’s agent Darryl Powell told Kicca.com: "Rudy has spent the summer playing in the Copa America and then helping Jamaica get to the Gold Cup final.

"He has proved himself as a genuine top Championship performer, there were six big clubs who wanted to sign him.

"But we found out yesterday that the new rules mean they won't allow him a new work permit, which has been a big disappointment.

"His son was born here, Rudy only had two years to stay before he qualified for citizenship and he really wanted to stay and make a life in Britain.

"But there is nothing we can do about it with these new rules. It's just a shame he has been caught up in them. “

Austin, who previously played in Norway with Brann, is now understood to be considering offers from clubs in Turkey and in the MLS.

Assuming that rules him out of joining any English clubs at this stage then? Find myself curious to know what Austin hasn't done to satisfy the new conditions.

Why don't reports actually describe the reason why a work permit has been refused?

Fair point, have added the link below to the story, which I assume is the issue. Jamaica are currently ranked 76th in the world.

Unbelievable when you look at the rules for migrants that flock to our open doors. This guy has lived in the uk for a number of years ,paid huge sums in tax , his son was born here. The FA and its strange rules hinders so much. One way round it is to offer a 1 year visa on a full sponsorship. Under the heading of further education ,this could be achieved. By which time he could marry a british born citizen and gain residency.

Maybe Mick was alluding to this last night. Wednesday probably are the only club to go public with their interest as Austin would not have had to move house.

I thought exactly the same thing. I'd be guessing that Rudy Austin earns around £10k a week so with tax being at 40%, he'd be contributing £4,000 a week to the government. He also has a son born here and lived here quite a while. Madness really!

It is a sign of how little transfer activity we have done since the Bournemouth pair and AMeN from Arsenal that a story which is "player we did not make an offer for can't join another club due to a reason that also rules him out from ever joining us" makes it as "news" on TWTD.
IF you want to see £8m being frittered away - try not spending it. It will go on wages for existing players soon enough.

Jamaica just got to the CONCACAF final beating USA on the way - they won 5/6 games in July when nearly all other nations didn't play.
They will shoot up the FIFA rankings next month, if they then make the top 50 sounds like he'd then get a work permit

Ha! In my defence, Austin has been linked with Town on a number of occasions over a fair amount of time! I'm sceptical that we have had any recent serious interest, although I'm pretty sure there was something in the loan interest last season.

Anyway, it seems he was going elsewhere had he been able to secure a work permit.

Will he try a different move on Thursday, or would that one be scuppered by red tape too?

The rules should mean fewer foreign players in British football. Good news.

I accept that the FA have introduced these new rules in order to limit the non-EU players to players of the highest ability and I fully support that stance.

However, I do find it a bit harsh that they are applying it retrospectively to players already established in the UK. After all Austin's son was born here and he was only 2 years away from being eligible for citizenship.

As pointed out in the FA article there have only been 42 players who would have been barred under these rules had they been applied 5 years ago. I don't know how many are still floating around the leagues but surely these could have been given some clemency when re-applying for a visa.

What a surprise he is thinking of signing elsewhere. These rumors about him and other players are a joke. Ipswich still aren't an attractive proposition for up and coming players

Really surprised if that's true about Douglas. Definitely worth a shout.....

Douglas signed a new contract with Brentford in February and is now told he is not wanted. Clearly they rated him when they were doing well last season and he could do a good job for us in midfield.
